Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi 's Advanced Microfluidics and Microdevices Laboratory (AMMLab) have created a cutting-edge sensing system that restores tactile feedback in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). This breakthrough enhances surgical precision, improves ease of use, and increases patient safety.
The innovative 'off-the-jaw' system integrates force and angle sensors into the handle of laparoscopic tools. It provides surgeons with real-time feedback on grasping forces and offers insights into tissue stiffness and thickness.
Solving a Major MIS Challenge
While MIS reduces pain, speeds up recovery, and lowers infection risks, traditional tools lack tactile feedback. This makes it difficult for surgeons to gauge the correct force or distinguish between tissue types. Without this sense of touch, mistakes—like over- or under-grasping delicate tissues—can occur.
The new design solves this problem. Unlike previous approaches that placed sensors on the tool's jaws, AMMLab's system keeps the sensors in the handle. This improves accuracy while maintaining the tool's flexibility during surgery.
Proven Efficiency and Broader Applications
Early trials show promising results. According to researchers, the system improves surgical task efficiency by 30%, helping reduce errors and enhance performance.
'Minimally invasive surgery has revolutionized healthcare, but the lack of tactile feedback remains a challenge,' said Mohammad A. Qasaimeh, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering at NYU Abu Dhabi.
The technology is also scalable. It could be adapted for robotic-assisted surgery, endoscopy, telemedicine, and other medical fields. Additionally, the system could shorten the learning curve for new surgeons by offering objective tactile feedback, accelerating their mastery of MIS techniques.
'Early trials have demonstrated a 30 percent improvement in surgical task efficiency, highlighting the practical impact of this technology on surgical performance,' added Wael Othman , Ph.D., Postdoctoral Researcher at AMMLab.

With this innovation, NYU Abu Dhabi is setting a new standard for minimally invasive procedures. By restoring the surgeon's sense of touch, this technology promises safer surgeries, faster learning for new surgeons, and potential applications across advanced medical fields.

Saudi Arabia-listed Al Moammar Information Systems (MIS) has divested 100% of its investment in American artificial intelligence (AI) firm Anthropic for $9.33 million. The transaction generated $4.26 million in profit for MIS that will be reflected in the second-quarter 2025 financial results, the company confirmed on Tuesday. MIS earlier said it would establish an investment portfolio in global AI companies, as part of its strategy to enhance revenue streams. It initially allocated SAR 40 million for the purpose through self-financing. Last year, MIS invested $5 million in Anthropic as part of a Series D funding round. Juwai IQI, a leading global real estate and proptech group, has highlighted that 2025 will mark big gains in Dubai's ambitions to become an international education powerhouse. Kashif Ansari, Co-Founder and Group CEO of Juwai IQI, pointed out that Dubai's has a strategy called 'Education 33' that aims to make the emirate one of the world's top-10 education destinations by 2033. That would require 10X growth in student numbers by 2033. These goals might have seemed ambitious when they were announced, but now global events have turned in Dubai's favour. Ansari believes Dubai is exceptionally well prepared to absorb the shift. The bold move to offer every Dubai resident a complimentary subscription to ChatGPT Plus is an example of its forward-looking leadership. At regular prices, that would cost the emirate nearly $80 million. 'Dubai is incredibly well placed for this moment. While other top education destinations like the UK, Canada, and Australia are limiting international student numbers, the number enrolled in Dubai's private higher education sector grew by 25% last year. 'Today, the UAE is home to more than 237,000 international students and 57 international branch campuses. Many are located in Dubai Knowledge Park and Dubai International Academic City. Abu Dhabi and Sharjah also host institutions such as NYU Abu Dhabi and the American University of Sharjah. Ansairi said Dubai will reap many benefits when it succeeds in this quest. 'Perhaps most importantly,' he said, 'it would create a thriving educational system that would provide the best opportunities to Dubai's own young people. 'It would also add another powerful export sector to the emirate's economy and boost spending in other areas such as housing, retail, and services. Every international student boosts the US economy by an average of about $44,000.'

The breakthrough test can detect COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in under 10 minutes. This innovation does not require sophisticated lab equipment or trained personnel. Instead, it uses a simple design to offer a fast, affordable, and portable screening tool. The device, called the Radially Compartmentalized Paper Chip (RCP-Chip), was engineered by researchers at the Advanced Microfluidics and Microdevices Laboratory (AMMLab). The RCP-Chip works with a single droplet of fluid and provides results through a visible color change. It detects even minute traces of viral genetic material. Notably, it operates without electricity or special tools. It only needs mild heat around 65°C, similar to warm water. The research findings were reported in the journal Advanced Sensor Research .
