Andhra CM Naidu seeks Centre's support for rooftop solar scheme, defence manufacturing hub

on Friday met three Union ministers here and sought the Centre's support for the state's renewable energy initiatives, a defence manufacturing hub proposal and a major water transfer project.
In his meeting with Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Prahlad Joshi, Naidu requested for the allocation of rooftop solar capacity under the
Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
and urged expediting approval of the proposals submitted by state electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) in January.
"Had a fruitful meeting... With the Centre's support, we will reduce energy costs, empower our people, and lead India's clean energy transition," Naidu, a key ally of the NDA, said in a post on X after meeting Joshi.
The chief minister has set a target of installing 20 lakh rooftop solar units by 2025. Under the scheme, SC/ST households will receive free rooftop solar systems, while backward caste households will get Rs 10,000 per kWp subsidy for up to 2kWp installations.
The state's Clean Energy Policy 2024-29 targets an additional 72.6 GW of renewable energy, including 40 GW of solar power.
In a separate meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Naidu presented a strategic vision to position Andhra Pradesh as a national hub for defence manufacturing and aerospace innovation, an official statement said.
The proposals include development of integrated defence facilities, revival of critical manufacturing units, support for indigenous aviation programmes, establishment of testing and training centres, and creation of thematic defence hubs, it said.

Naidu also underlined the state's readiness -- with its strong infrastructure base, skilled workforce, and proactive policy environment -- to play a leading role in advancing the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission through self-reliant defence production and innovation, the statement said.
During his meeting with Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, Naidu submitted a proposal for the
Polavaram-Banakacherla link project
.
The project aims to divert surplus Godavari floodwater to the drought-affected areas through a three-part water transfer system, including the Bollapalle reservoir, lift irrigation systems, and tunnels through the Nallamala hills.
Naidu said the project supports national missions like Jal Jeevan, Blue Revolution, and Make in India, while highlighting Andhra Pradesh's rightful access to surplus water as a downstream state after bifurcation, the statement said.

Assuring that a detailed project report (DPR) would be submitted soon, Naidu requested timely approval for the project, the statement said.
Union Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu were present during the meetings.

Saseendran has once again written to Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav reiterating the State's key demands to address the increasing incidents of human-wildlife conflict in Kerala. The State's demands chiefly include an amendment to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and the declaration of wild pigs as vermin, at least temporarily in identified hotspots. The renewed appeal comes in the light of a letter from the Union Ministry, explaining the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, particularly those pertaining to hunting animals listed under Schedules I and II. 'Limits powers' Arguing that these limited the powers of the Chief Wildlife Warden and hampered timely action, Mr. Saseendran also flagged the ambiguity in the definition of the term 'dangerous animal' in the Act. Highlighting the growing threats posed by wild animals in human habitats, he emphasised the impracticality of the current procedures. He pointed out that due to these constraints, the Forest department had been unable to act swiftly, thereby intensifying the conflict and endangering human lives and livelihoods. He also proposed simplifying the Standard Operating Procedures for eliminating dangerous animals. The State has also called for declaring wild pigs as vermin in villages identified as hotspots. 'Such a declaration, even if limited to a duration of six months, would greatly facilitate site-specific management of the species in these areas and contribute significantly to mitigate the ongoing human-wildlife conflicts,' the letter states. The government also renewed its demand for an assistance of ₹620 crore to implement preventive measures to tackle the unfolding crisis.

Sukanta Majumdar writes to LS speaker, says attack on his convoy is breach of privilege
KOLKATA: Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Friday asked Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla to initiate breach of parliamentary privilege proceedings over an alleged attack on his convoy by West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress during his visit to South 24 Parganas district. The West Bengal BJP chief had gone to Budge Budge in South 24 Parganas on Thursday to meet an injured party worker when some people staged a protest, demanding unpaid wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) Scheme and threw slippers at his convoy and shouted slogans against him. In his letter, Majumdar, the Balurghat MP and president of Bengal unit of BJP, said, 'On June 19, while I was visiting Diamond Harbour to meet the victims of political violence and assess the law-and-order situation in the area, my official convoy was gheraoed and violently attacked by a mob reportedly comprising workers of the TMC. Stones were pelted at my convoy, vehicles were vandalized and many persons accompanying me were injured. The attack posed a serious and direct threat to my life and the lives of those present.' 'I submit that this incident amounts to serious breach of privilege and contempt of the House and urge you to take cognisance of this matter and refer it to the committee of privileges for appropriate examination and action,' he said. Majumdar also alleged that the police stood as mute spectators. He wrote on X: 'The police not only failed to act during the violence — they also failed to take any preventive action, despite clear signs of escalating tension.' Rahul Goswami, superintendent of police (SP), Diamond Harbour police district, refused to comment on the developments. The central government's decision to suspend the Centre's 60% share of MGNREGA funds has been a major political issue in West Bengal since 2022. On Wednesday, the Calcutta high court directed the Centre to resume the MGNREGA from August 1. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said the Centre had stopped the wages of the poor people who had worked under the MGNREGA scheme. 'It is obvious that they were seething with anger. When the people staged protests, Majumdar branded the women as 'jihadis'. He should apologise in public for his statements,' Ghosh said. The TMC shared a video clip on social media in which Majumdar could be heard saying that the protestors in Budge Budge were 'jihadis'.

Bindu has said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement that those who speak English in India would soon feel ashamed reflected the 'narrow politics' he represents. She alleged that Mr. Shah was trying to impose Hindi by speaking against English. Bharat Mata row On the Bharat Mata row involving Raj Bhavan, she said that the Governor's office should not be made a place for propagating the ideals of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). She said that there was no protocol violation in the incident in which Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty walked out of an official function at Raj Bhavan in protest against the display of an image of Bharat Mata associated with the RSS. It was the Governor who violated the protocol by keeping such an image in a Constitutional office, she alleged.
