In 4th visit to poll-bound state this year, PM Modi to flag off first made-in-India locomotive to be exported from Bihar factory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Siwan on Friday in his fourth visit to poll-bound Bihar this year. There, he is scheduled to flag off the first made-in-India diesel locomotive to be exported from the Marhaura railway factory. The locomotive will be exported to the West African nation of Guinea. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate and lay foundation stones for several development projects, worth a total of Rs 9,145 crore, during his Siwan visit. Officials said, however, that the highlight would be the feat of the Marhaura factory, which they said is now spearheading a new era of industrial resurgence. The factory, officially known as Diesel Locomotive Factory, Marhaura, was established in September 2018. It is a joint venture between GE Transportation (now part of Wabtec) and Indian Railways. The recent deal with Guinea, titled 'Project KOMO', involves the export of 140 diesel engines valued at around Rs 3,000 crore. A Railways official said, 'This moment marks a historic milestone. For the first time, a manufacturing unit based in Bihar is exporting heavy locomotive engines to the global market, firmly placing India on the map as a global railway manufacturing hub. This achievement echoes the vision of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, translating policy into tangible, global impact. With the slogan 'Make in Bihar – Make for the World', Saran is transforming from a small town to a symbol of India's manufacturing capability.' In his previous visits to Bihar this year, Prime Minister Modi had visited Bhagalpur, Madhubani and Vikramganj (in Rohtas). A BJP leader said, 'In election year, the PM has been travelling to every Bihar region, telling people about the central government's mega projects for the state. We are expecting more Bihar visits by the PM in the coming months.' Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. BSL's special-grade steel powers Navy warfare

1 2 Bokaro: The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has marked another significant step in India's journey towards defence self-reliance by supplying special-grade steel for the Navy's first indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), INS Arnala, which was inducted into service on June 18, it said in a statement. Out of the 3,500 tonnes of special steel supplied by SAIL for the ASW-SWC project, BSL contributed 3,100 tonnes. This special-grade steel was used not only in INS Arnala but also in seven other warships under construction at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), showcasing BSL's critical role in strengthening India's naval capabilities, said a SAIL official. This move reinforces SAIL's role in advancing the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) mission. By reducing reliance on imported materials, BSL is contributing to a robust and indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem. Earlier, SAIL-BSL provided special steel for INS Vikrant, INS Vindhyagiri, INS Nilgiri, and INS Surat.

INS Arnala Joins Indian Navy as New Anti-Submarine Warship

On 18 June 2025, INS Arnala was added to the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. The event took place at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam. General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff, attended the ceremony. The warship is the first in a new group called Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft. It was built to find and stop enemy submarines. It can also do search and rescue missions and other small naval tasks. INS Arnala is 77 meters long and weighs over 1,490 tonnes. It is the biggest Indian warship that uses a diesel engine and waterjet to move. The ship was made in India by GRSE and Larsen & Toubro Shipbuilding. This shows India's progress in making its own defence equipment. It supports the goal of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). The Chief of Defence Staff said India's Navy is growing stronger. The country is building more warships on its own. Indian warships now use modern tools like stealth systems, radars, and electronic warfare tech. INS Arnala is named after a fort in Maharashtra. It is a symbol of India's power at sea and success in local shipbuilding.

India's first indigenous Anti-Submarine Shallow Water Craft INS Arnala commissioned in Vizag

INS Arnala, India's first indigenous Anti-Submarine Shallow Water Craft, was commissioned into the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) of the Indian Navy, at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, in the presence of Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan. Named after the historic coastal fort in Maharashtra, INS Arnala is a step in the direction of building naval capabilities in line with the force levels envisaged to meet the future challenges. The commissioning ceremony was hosted by Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, and attended by senior naval officials, civilian dignitaries, former Commanding Officers of erstwhile Arnala, guests, and representatives from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Larsen & Toubro Shipbuilding. Designed for a broad range of anti-submarine operations, INS Arnala is equipped to conduct sub-surface surveillance and interdiction, search and rescue missions, and Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO). This 77-metre-long warship, with a gross tonnage of over 1490 tonnes, is the largest Indian Naval warship to be propelled by a diesel engine-waterjet combination. The commissioning of INS Arnala not only reinforces India's defence capability but also highlights the triumph of indigenous design, engineering, and manufacturing. As India continues its maritime journey toward greater self-reliance, INS Arnala stands as a proud symbol of national strength, industrial partnership and naval excellence, said General Chauhan. He underscored the Indian Navy's transition from a 'Buyer's Navy' to a 'Builder's Navy', highlighting this as the backbone of the country's 'Blue Water aspirations'. With a large number of ships currently under construction, including capital warships and auxiliaries, India has emerged as a formidable force in shipbuilding, he said. Indigenous warships now feature cutting-edge home-grown systems ranging from stealth technology to electronic warfare suites, advanced sensors, significantly enhancing combat preparedness and progressively realising the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

INS Arnala joins fleet: Navy inducts India's first anti-submarine shallow water craft in Visakhapatnam; boost to coastal defence under ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat'

VISAKHAPATNAM : Strengthening the country's coastal defence, The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Arnala, India's first Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Visakhapatnam dockyard on Wednesday under the Eastern Naval Command. The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan and attended by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, ENC, along with senior naval officers and representatives from the shipbuilding industry. INS Arnala was designed and constructed indigenously as part of the ' Aatmanirbhar Bharat ' initiative. The state-of-the-art vessel signals an advancement in strengthening India's maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The primary role of the ship is to detect, track, and prosecute enemy submarines, particularly in coastal and shallow water regions. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan stated that India acquired a stature as a significant maritime power and is now regarded as a preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This status was achieved by leveraging India's strategic location, economic influence, and the strength and capabilities of the Indian Navy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo As we protect and preserve vital sea lanes crucial for global trade and energy flows, our naval platforms play a role in maintaining maritime security, countering piracy, and ensuring the safety of our shipping routes. Considering the current flux in the geopolitical environment and the ever-challenging security situations, our Navy needs to remain strong, credible, and equipped with the latest state-of-the-art ships, he added. During the recent Operation Sindoor, it was a matter of pride that the firepower available at sea, in terms of both ship and air-launched missiles, imposed a significant impact on the enemy's operation planning and tactical actions. Consequently, the Indian Navy established a kind of de facto blockade, thus confining the Pakistan Navy and their activities to the harbour or near the coastline only, Gen Anil Chauhan added. With 60 ships at different stages of construction and more than 180 ships at the pre-contract stage, it's a testimony of the govt's commitment towards raising and maintaining a strong blue-water maritime force, he added. Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, ENC, expressed that INS Arnala was designed to counter submarine threats in shallow waters. INS Arnala is purpose-built to protect the coastal and offshore assets as well as choke points from threats that are becoming increasingly quiet, fast, and invisible. Arnala is also the first IN platform to have been installed with and successfully fired the 30 mm Naval Surface Gun (NSG), a close-in-weapon system, he added. Arnala, the first of the eight ASW SWCs indigenously designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, was delivered to the Indian Navy on May 8 at L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli. The warship was designed and constructed as per the Classification Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) of GRSE with L&T Shipyard, thus demonstrating the success of collaborative defence manufacturing. Arnala is named after the historic fort 'Arnala' located off Vasai, Maharashtra, a reflection of India's rich maritime heritage. At 77 metres in length and displacing over 1,490 tonnes, Arnala stands as the largest Indian naval vessel equipped with a diesel engine-waterjet propulsion system, a configuration that significantly improves speed and manoeuvrability in shallow waters. The vessel is specifically designed for underwater surveillance, search and rescue operations, as well as Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO).
