We finally know what Romans gobbled up for snacks on Mediterranean islands

Songbirds were on the menu 2,000 years ago on the Roman island of Mallorca, archaeological evidence reveals. Bones of the small thrushes were discovered in a trash pit near the ancient ruins of a fast-food shop, giving researchers new clues about Roman-era street food.
"Based on local culinary traditions here in Mallorca — where song thrushes (Turdus philomelos) are still occasionally consumed — I can say from personal experience that their flavor is more akin to small game birds like quail than to chicken," Alejandro Valenzuela, a researcher at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies in Mallorca, Spain, told Live Science in an email.
In a new study published in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Valenzuela detailed his analysis of a collection of animal bones discovered in the ancient city of Pollentia , which was established after the Romans conquered the Balearic Islands in 123 B.C. Pollentia quickly became an active Roman port, and the city expanded to include a forum, temples, cemeteries and a network of shops.
One of these shops likely functioned as a "popina" — a small establishment where locals could gather and grab a snack or some wine — as archaeologists found six large amphorae embedded in a countertop. Nearby, a roughly 13-foot-deep (4 meters) cesspit had been filled with garbage, including broken ceramics that helped date the pit's use to between 10 B.C. and A.D. 30, along with a variety of mammal, fish and bird bones.
But Valenzuela was interested in investigating the role of small birds in the ancient Mallorcan diet, since their fragile bones are often poorly preserved at archaeological sites. In the Pollentia pit, though, there were more bones from song thrushes than from any other kind of bird.
By looking closely at the specific thrush bones found in the cesspit, Valenzuela found a pattern: While there were numerous skulls and breastbones (sterna) from the small birds, there were almost no arm and leg bones or bones of the upper chest, which are associated with the meatiest parts of the bird.

The absence of the fleshy portions of the bird carcasses "suggests that thrushes were widely consumed, forming part of the everyday diet and urban food economy" at Pollentia, Valenzuela wrote in the study.
Historical records show that Roman game hunters often caught song birds in large groups using nets or pit traps, and then sold them to retail establishments that cooked and distributed them as food.
Based on the bone evidence, Valenzuela thinks the birds were prepared by removing the sternum to flatten the breasts. This technique would have allowed the food vendor to rapidly cook the bird — either on a grill or pan-fried in oil — while retaining moisture.
The broken ceramics found in the cesspit could suggest that the thrushes were served on plates just as they would have been in a home dining context. "However, given their small size and the street food context, it's also entirely plausible that they were presented on skewers or sticks for easier handling — both options are possible," Valenzuela said.

Along with thrush bones, Valenzuela found that the Romans ate domestic chickens (Gallus gallus) and European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in large quantities, suggesting they were also on the menu at this ancient fast-food joint.
Roman cities had a dynamic approach to food, Valenzuela wrote in the study, as seasonal products like thrushes were easily integrated into everyday diets, and "street food was a fundamental component of the urban experience."

According to the university, the study detailed the tool's effectiveness, highlighting that although many individuals with hormone receptor+ (HR+) breast cancer respond well initially, there is a relapse rate of up to 40%. By utilising the developed technology and examining circulating tumour DNA, researchers have succeeded in predicting the occurrence of clinical relapses as much as 68 months earlier than what conventional methods could reveal. The process for the early detection of relapses starts with obtaining an initial tumour biopsy. From this sample, patient-specific mutations are determined. Subsequently, blood tests are analysed for the presence of these specific mutations in the circulating tumour DNA. This approach is not limited to breast cancer; it is applicable to any solid tumour type, and researchers are seeking regulatory approvals in the US and Europe to make it globally accessible. Altum Sequencing president Joaquín Martínez-López said: 'Our goal is not to diagnose cancer, but to provide physicians with an effective tool to monitor the evolution of the disease after treatment. 'Current diagnostic tools have sensitivity limitations, which makes early detection of these relapses difficult, but thanks to NGS (next generation sequencing) DNA sequencing technology, we can detect one tumour cell among a million healthy cells from a simple blood sample.' The startup is also exploring the integration of generative AI. It has already incorporated machine learning algorithms and now aims to utilise this new technology to further enhance its diagnostic processes. The company has received backing from the Community of Madrid, the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation, and the European Regional Development Fund. It is also partnering with hospitals and research centres, including the Gregorio Marañón Hospital and Universidad Complutense. A new study published in the journal Science Advances confirms that the peopling of the Americas began much earlier than originally thought. Back in 2021, a series of footprints were discovered within the mud of a paleolake bed which had long ago dried up. A 2021 study hypothesized that the prints meant the arrival of settlers to North America occurred somewhere between 23,000 and 21,000 years earlier than previously believed. Now, the new study has confirmed that the footprints were made between 20,700 and 22,400 years ago. "It's a remarkably consistent record," explained lead author Vance Holliday, who was also a co-author on the initial study. "You get to the point where it's really hard to explain all this away. As I say in the paper, it would be serendipity in the extreme to have all these dates giving you a consistent picture that's in error.'Halliday undertook the study for a second time because there was some controversy over the use of ancient pollen and seeds to determine the footprints' age. For this new study, he and his researchers analyzed the mud itself. 'Mud never lies,' Halliday said, explaining that it always holds up to radiocarbon analysis. This most recent study makes the third paper and third laboratory to confirm the timeframe of the footprints' creation. 'It would be serendipity in the extreme to have all these dates giving you a consistent picture that's in error,' Halliday said. The discovery is particularly notable for its lack of artifacts, leading Halliday to posit that the footprints were left by nomadic hunter-gatherers trudging through the lake bed. 'These people live by their artifacts, and they were a long way from where they can acquire replacement material,' he explained. 'They're not just randomly losing artifacts. It's logical…If you're passing through, carrying your gear, you're not leaving it by chance.' First Near-Complete Denisovan Skull Reveals What This Ancient Human Cousin Looked Like
A prominent brow ridge with a brain as large as modern humans and Neanderthals — that's what the archaic human group, the Denisovans, looked like, according to work published this week in Cell and Science. Palaeontologists used ancient molecules to identify a cranium found near Harbin in northeastern China as belonging to the group. It's the first time a near-complete skull has been definitively linked to the extinct people. The fossil, which is at least 146,000 years old, ends a decade and a half of speculation about the Denisovans' appearance. This had remained a mystery since scientists identified them from unique DNA taken from a finger bone found in a Siberian cave in 2010. The 'massive' cranium — the upper portion of the skull, lacking the lower jawbone — is one of the best preserved of all archaic human fossils, according to researchers who first described it in 2021. Qiang Ji, a palaeontologist at Hebei GEO University in Shijiazhuang, China, obtained the specimen from an unnamed man in 2018. The man — who Ji suspects discovered the artefact himself but failed to report it to authorities — claimed that his grandfather unearthed the fossil in 1933 during bridge-construction work over Long Jiang (which means dragon river), and buried it in an abandoned well, where it remained until a deathbed confession. In 2021, Ji and his colleagues determined that the 'Dragon Man' fossil represented a new archaic human species, which they crowned Homo longi4. When Ji published those findings, Qiaomei Fu, a geneticist at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing, got in touch. Fu worked on the very first Denisovan DNA from the Siberian finger bone and wanted to see whether the Dragon Man fossil contained any ancient molecules. She and her team first attempted to extract ancient DNA from a part of the skull called the petrous bone — often a good source — and from an attached tooth. They didn't recover any genetic material but did extract and sequence fragments from 95 ancient proteins from the petrous samples. Fu compared these with Neanderthal, modern human and Denisovan sequences. One protein sequence from the Harbin fossil was identical to that of a protein from the Siberian finger bone, as well as from Denisovans uncovered in Tibet and Taiwan, but differed from proteins in modern humans and Neanderthals. That suggested the Dragon Man individual was a Denisovan. Fu's team identified two further, less conclusive, protein matches. It's the second time this year that researchers have used ancient proteins to identify a fossil as Denisovan. In April, Takumi Tsutaya, a bioarchaeologist at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Kanagawa, Japan, and his colleagues identified a Taiwanese jawbone as belonging to a Denisovan. Tsutaya says that he was amazed to learn that another Denisovan has already been identified. But Fu says that she wanted further evidence. She turned to a tiny chip of calcified dental plaque, or calculus. Fu looked for DNA from the host among the bacterial DNA in the sample. And she found it. Genetic sequences from the maternally inherited mitochondrial genome of the Dragon Man skull were most closely related to early Denisovans from Siberia, which were between 187,000 and 217,000 years old. Fu says that this is the first time that host DNA has been recovered from dental calculus from the Palaeolithic era, which ended 12,000 years ago. Rikai Sawafuji, a geneticist at Kyushu University in Fukoka, Japan, who worked on the Taiwanese fossil, was surprised that the team recovered human DNA from the calculus, given that no DNA was recovered from the petrous bone. She says this could spur other researchers to analyse ancient plaque from Palaeolithic fossils. 'If there is some dental calculus,' she says, 'people can extract human mitochondrial DNA from those samples' to learn more about prehistoric human migrations. Potentially more important is that scientists now have a Denisovan cranium that researchers can use to identify other Denisovan specimens in their collections, even if no ancient DNA or protein can be found.
