William's dad, Shawn, is now a member of the Detroit Red Wings management, operating as the GM for their AHL affiliate as well as Assistant GM to the Red Wings. But Shawn spent many years playing for the Oilers. He played with a current member of the Oilers when they were a rookie.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins entered the NHL in the 2011-12 season. Shawn and Nugent-Hopkins didn't spend much even-strength ice time together, but they did skate together on the powerplay for two years before Shawn was traded to the Dallas Stars.

When speaking to the press during the combine, William revealed a few Oilers-related tidbits.
For starters, he's cheering for the Oilers to win the Cup Final. Additionally, William said that the one player he would love to play with, who his dad played with, is Nugent-Hopkins.
The draft hopeful also revealed that he first met Nugent-Hopkins when he was five years old. William also commented that Nugent-Hopkins looks like he hasn't aged a day since he turned 18.
William is a US-born player who spent this past season split between the USNTDP and the NCAA. He joined the University of Michigan mid-way through the season.

The 6-foot-5 and 199-pound centerman is ranked 24th among North American skaters according to NHL Central Scouting. That could increase his chances of being drafted by the Oilers, who's highest draft pick is a 3rd-round selection.
If that happened, the apple would be pretty close to that tree.

Trevor Zegras trade grades: Who won the Flyers and Ducks deal?

We have a trade in the NHL! And it involves two rebuilding squads, along with a player who could use a change of scenery. On Monday, as the 2025 NHL Draft looms, the Anaheim Ducks dealt Trevor Zegras -- the Bedford, New York native known for some flashy stuff that's included lacrosse-style goals, but also for not living up to his ninth overall pick in the 2019 pedigree -- to the Philadelphia Flyers. It's an intriguing move, especially with all the trade talk surrounding Zegras for a while. And as usual, we're going to give this one some grades for both sides. Let's dive in with the details: The Trevor Zegras trade details FLYERS GET: C Trevor Zegras DUCKS GET: C Ryan Poehling, pick No. 45 in the 2025 draft, a 2026 fourth-round pick Flyers trade grade It's a tale as old as time: you take a disappointing first-round pick and buy low on him, hoping you can get him to reach that tantalizing potential. That's the case here with Zegras, who is a restricted free agent after this coming season. The Flyers can see if he's worth re-signing. Zegras is still only 24. He had back-to-back 60-point seasons not too long ago. The potential is all there, and maybe a change in zip codes unlocks it. I'm on the side of this being a great move for Philly. Losing a two-way guy like Poehling wasn't that much to give up. GRADE: B+ Ducks trade grade The goal for the Ducks continues to be to grab as many picks as possible and to sell off any players who aren't part of the long-term plan. Yes, this is a sell-low on Zegras, but a second-round pick and a player who could be a nice depth add isn't a bad haul. They probably didn't want to face re-signing him as an RFA, so that's it. Could they have gotten more at the trade deadline? Hard to say. But it was time to deal him either way. GRADE: B

Trevor Zegras traded from Anaheim Ducks to Philadelphia Flyers: Source

Trevor Zegras, long rumored to be a trade target, finally has been dealt. The Anaheim Ducks agreed to send Zegras to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday for a second-round pick in next week's draft (No. 45 overall), a fourth-round pick in 2026 and forward Ryan Poehling, a Flyers team source told The Athletic. Advertisement Zegras, 24, once was thought to be a foundational player for the Ducks, who drafted him with the No. 9 pick in 2019. Since then, he has enjoyed periods of success but also inconsistency and injuries. This season, Zegras totaled 12 goals and 20 assists in 57 games. He has 186 points in 268 career NHL games. This is the second major trade between the Ducks and Flyers in less than two years. In January 2024, the Flyers sent prospect Cutter Gauthier to Anaheim for Jamie Drysdale and a second-round pick. Aleksander Barkov's Panthers Message Should Worry NHL Rivals

Aleksander Barkov's Panthers Message Should Worry NHL Rivals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A third consecutive Stanley Cup might not be far off for the Florida Panthers, or at least that's team captain Aleksander Barkov's view of his team's contending window. Advertisement Barkov surely wants the rest of the NHL to know about the Panthers' plans, and he made them clear on Saturday amid the endless celebration of the second Florida championship in as many years. 'I don't see us slowing down,' Barkov told the Miami Herald, just days after leading the Panthers to their second consecutive title. Only three franchises — the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders — have ever completed a three-peat. While the Panthers have only won two titles, Florida has now made three straight trips to the Stanley Cup Final and could join that elite club next season if it can go the distance. Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov (16) warms up before a Edwards-Imagn Images The Panthers have earned their place as the NHL's newest dynasty-in-the-making, and only the Vegas Golden Knights prevented a three-peat with their win over Florida in the 2023 Stanley Cup Final. Advertisement About the only thing the Florida franchise has fumbled in the past two years is the Stanley Cup itself. According to an X post from Pickswise, the Panthers dented the Cup during the celebration, Asked about the broken Cup, the Panthers captain wasn't fazed. 'The Keepers of the Cup have seen worse,' Barkov said regarding the dented trophy, per Panthers social media content manager Jameson Olive. General manager Bill Zito made clear after winning the Cup earlier this week that the franchise is willing to spend as much money as possible to retain their core players, including pending free agents Aaron Ekblad, Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand. Advertisement "We're going to spend to the cap," Zito said during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Wednesday. "The Viola family ownership has empowered us to try to do everything we can to have the best team we can. So we're going to spend it all."
