All about Somvati Amavasya: When is it in May, Rituals, Celebration, and all one needs to know

Time of India26-05-2025

Amavasya is referred to as the no-moon day when the Moon is not visible from the Earth. And when this Amvasya falls on a Monday, it is called Somvati Amavasya, and is considered especially auspicious.
Why?
It is said that Somwar, or Monday, is the day of Lord Shiva, the divine masculine who is the transformer of the Universe, and because Amawasya relates to the moon, it is seen as a feminine energy. And thus, Somwati Amavasya brings the divine masculine and feminine energies into perfect harmony.
What is done on Somvati Amavasya
Somvati Amavasya is considered important for 4 things - Snaan, Daan, Tarpan, and Vrat. Peop;e perform Pitra tarpan and rituals to honour their ancestors, they take a bath in the holy rivers, especially Ganga in Haridwar on this day, they perform Daan, or charity, in the form of food, clothes, or other essentials, and many prefer to fast on this day to please the Gods.
Today, as Somwati Amavasya and Vat Savitri vrat are on the same day, men and women can both keep fasts for each other's long life, health, and more.
When is it celebrated in May 2025?
In May 2025, Somwati Amavasya will be observed today, May 26, Monday. It coincides with the Vrat Savitri vrat, and according to reports, the timings for the two are also the same.
And thus, women will keep a fast on May 26 for Somvati Amavasya as well as Vat Savitri to pray for their husband's long life, health, prosperity, and more.

Rituals and customs of Somvati Amavasya
One of the most important parts of Somvati Amavasya is Snaan Daan. And thus people do the important ritual of taking a dip in the sacred Ganga during sunrise. Devotees go to Haridwar, Ujjain, Rishikesh, Varanasi, or another place, and take a dip in the river Ganga to cleanse their sins and purify their souls.
Next is Daan, or charity, where people are expected to give back to society, not just ask something from God. On Somvati Amavasya, people donate clothes, grains, fruits, jaggery, til seeds, or more to people in need.
It is also said that offering food to Brahmins on this day brings great Punya in life, and some people donate to ashrams or temples in the form of Anna daan, or donating grains.
Worshipping the ancestors
Somvati Amavasya is also believed to be a day to remember your ancestors, the ones who look over you from another realm, and perform Tarpan, which is basically offering water with flowers, barley, and more, to ask for their peaceful afterlife.
It is said that when the ancestors are happy and pleased, families are blessed with good health, success, and peace.
Fasting on the day
Similar to Ekadashi and Purnmashi, some people also keep a fast on Amavasya. And as Vat Savitri vrat is on the same day, many women will observe a Nirjala fast on the day to pray for their husbands. They abstain from grains, salt, and sometimes even water, depending on their belief, and the fast is broken only after sunset with a simple satvik meal or fruits.
On the day, women pray and tie a sacred thread around the Vat vriksha, which is believed to be a symbol of long life.
What to do at home?
Puja can also be done at home or in temples, but make sure that the Puja room or home temple is clean and so are the idols and murtis. Wake up early, take a shower, cleanse yourself with Gangajal if you can't visit Haridwar, and then start the prayers for the day. Offer milk, water, flowers, honey, etc to the Shivling at home, and chant mantras all day to maintain a calm environment.

International Yoga Day observed in Japan's Toyota City

Bhubaneswar: As India celebrated the International Day of Yoga on Saturday, over 6,000 km away, many Indians and Japanese came together in Japan's Toyota for a three-hour event at the Takahashi Community Centre, featuring an hour of yoga, 25 minutes of pranayama and guided meditation, and 10 minutes of stretching accompanied by music. "We started with the standard yoga protocol designed by the Indian govt, which all teachers are expected to follow. The aim is to make yoga accessible to everyone," said Nivedita Sahu, a yoga instructor. After the yoga session, Japanese artistes performed an Indian semi-classical dance. Their graceful movements to the chant 'Asato Ma Sad Gamaya' and a soulful Rabindranath Tagore song showed their respect for and understanding of Indian culture. Shomon Akita, a Buddhist monk from Guzeiin Temple in Toyota, explained the essence of the Patanjali Yoga Sutra. He also shared insights on the shloka 'Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah', emphasising universal well-being and compassion. A thoughtful and informative presentation by Subha Kokuba Chakraborty highlighted the cultural similarities between India and Japan, exploring shared values such as discipline, inner peace and reverence for tradition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eat 1 Teaspoon Every Night, See What Happens A Week Later [Video] getfittoday Undo She also led the energetic 'stretch with music' session. There was also a sari-draping session. The event concluded with the singing of India's national anthem. A separate yoga session was also organised by the Indian embassy in Tokyo. The Indian High Commission in Wellington organised 30 yoga-related events across New Zealand, Samoa, Vanuatu and the Cook Islands. Among them a session was held in the New Zealand Parliament (Beehive) in Wellington on June 16 in collaboration with the United Nations Association of New Zealand (UNANZ) and Art of Living. Another programme was organised on HCI premises on June 21 in collaboration with Heartfulness NZ, Art of Living, and Hindu Swayam Sevak Sangh. "I went for both the programmes because I like to attend celebrations of Indian culture," said Animesh Panda, secretary of New Zealand Odia Society.

How to identify snake eggs before they hatch in your backyard?

So you're gardening, pulling weeds, maybe moving some rocks or checking on the compost pile, and then you see a small cluster of leathery-looking white eggs nestled in the dirt. They're not chicken eggs. They're not bird eggs. And they're definitely not the Easter Bunny's leftovers. Congratulations (or sorry), you might have stumbled upon snake eggs. If that just gave you the chills, you're not alone. Finding snake eggs in your backyard can feel like something straight out of a horror movie, but it's actually more common than most people realize—especially during the warmer months when snakes are laying and nesting. The good news? You can learn how to spot these eggs before they hatch and tiny snakes start slithering around your garden. Let's break down the basics. Where do snakes lay eggs? Most snakes are pretty private about laying eggs. They look for warm, damp, and hidden places to lay their eggs—think under logs, inside compost heaps, beneath rock piles, or tucked deep into your mulch bed. If you're cleaning out an old shed or flipping over bricks in your yard, don't be surprised if you find a hidden clutch. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ortopedická obuv je lepšia ako masáž KÚPTE TERAZ Undo Keep in mind: not all snakes lay eggs. Some, like rattlesnakes and garter snakes, give live birth. But egg-layers like rat snakes, king snakes, and corn snakes? They could definitely be leaving a nursery behind your flowerbed. What do snake eggs look like ? Here's what makes them stand out: Shape and texture: Unlike hard bird eggs, snake eggs are soft, leathery, and slightly squishy. They feel kind of like a soft rubber balloon. They're usually elongated or oval, not round. Color: Most snake eggs are off-white or cream-colored. If they've been sitting for a while, the surface may look a little dry or dusty. Clustering: Snakes don't lay eggs one at a time. If you find a group of 5 to 20+ eggs, chances are it's a clutch. They're often stuck together in a little bundle. Size: Most snake eggs are around 1 to 2 inches long, though this can vary by species. Here's the kicker—if you're not sure, don't poke. It's tempting, especially if you're a curious soul, but disturbing the eggs can harm developing embryos (if they're snake eggs) or spread bacteria (if they're something else). Found eggs? What should you do? Let's say you've identified a suspicious clutch in your garden. Now what? Don't panic. Not all snakes are dangerous. Many are beneficial for controlling pests like rodents. Don't move the eggs yourself, unless you absolutely have to. Mishandling them can damage the embryo or lead to hatching in your garage (true story). Call a local wildlife expert or animal control. They can safely relocate the eggs if needed. Keep pets and kids away from the area until it's sorted out. Snakes may seem scary, but most are just trying to survive—just like you. And believe it or not, having non-venomous snakes in your yard is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. Still, we get it—surprise snake babies are not everyone's idea of backyard bliss. So next time you stumble across mysterious eggs while doing yard work, take a second look. Soft, leathery, oval, and tucked in a hidden spot? You might just be looking at the next generation of slithery neighbors. And if you're still not sure? When in doubt, call in the pros before they hatch.
