Arms factory, operating from banquet, busted in Bokaro

Bokaro: A joint team, comprising a special task force (STF) of Kolkata Police, a Jharkhand Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the district police uncovered an illegal mini gun manufacturing factory operating from a marriage hall in Jaridih Upper Market, in Bermo late on Thursday night.
The secret unit was hidden on the premises of Kaveri Marriage Palace and a nearby warehouse under Gandhinagar police station limits. The location of the factory was learnt by the STF during the interrogation of a few criminals in Kolkata, the police said.
"The team seized a cache of illegal arms-making machinery, including a lathe machine, semi-finished pistols, tools, and weapon parts. Additionally, Rs 1 lakh cash, 40 cartons of illegal canned beer, and other suspicious items were recovered from the site," Bokaro SP Harvinder Singh said on Friday.
Two accused, identified as Praveen from Munger and Keshav from Khagaria districts of Bihar, were arrested. Both are skilled at making illegal guns, the police said. However, the main accused, who ran the factory, managed to flee, police sources said.
The investigation took shape when Kolkata Police arrested a few criminals who revealed the existence of an illegal arms facility operating in Jharkhand's Bermo sub-division.
Once manufactured, these weapons were then supplied to criminal syndicates across West Bengal and other states.
The entire premises, including the marriage hall and adjacent structures, were thoroughly searched by the joint forces during the operation. Police sources indicate that efforts are now focused on dismantling the wider network behind the arms trade.
Stating that the seizure highlighted the growing concern over illegal arms networks operating under the cover of legitimate businesses, Singh said, "The district police is thoroughly investigating to unravel the network. Stocks of beer, along with chemicals, are also concerning."

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia was on Friday questioned for nearly three hours by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) over an alleged multi-crore rupee classroom scam. The former deputy chief minister left the ACB office around 2.40 p.m. after appearing before investigators around noon. While a defiant Sisodia lashed out at the BJP for allegedly misusing investigative agencies for political vendetta, the ACB said that the scam involved inflated costs in the construction of classrooms and school buildings under the Delhi government. 'Manish Sisodia was questioned in the presence of an independent witness, and his statements were recorded. Further investigation is currently underway,' said the ACB. Earlier this month, the ACB issued summonses to Sisodia and former Health Minister Satyendar Jain. Jain appeared before investigators on June 6. The summonses were linked to a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the ACB on April 30, alleging irregularities in the construction of 12,748 classrooms or semi-permanent structures in government schools. According to the ACB, the alleged scam involved awarding contracts at inflated prices, each classroom reportedly costing Rs 24.86 lakh, nearly five times the standard cost. Investigators claimed the contracts were given to 34 contractors, many of whom had links to the AAP. Further allegations include that the semi-permanent structures (SPS), designed to last around 30 years, were priced similarly to more durable Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) buildings, which typically have a lifespan of 75 years. The ACB also noted that an additional Rs 326 crore was added to the project cost without fresh tenders. The AAP has consistently dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. Madras High Court asks DVAC to file cases against two IAS officers
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) to register a criminal case against two IAS officers – C Kamaraj and M Vallalar – and suspended additional milk commissioner G Christhudhas, over an alleged scam in the procurement of registers for over 8,000 primary milk co-operative societies in 2019-20. Justice B Pugalendhi issued the order while dismissing a petition filed by Christhudhas challenging the orders through which he was suspended and prevented from retiring from service, a day before his superannuation in 2022. As per the court order, Kamaraj, the then dairy development director and Aavin MD, decided in 2019 that all primary milk co-operative societies should maintain uniformity in accounts using five specific registers. Quotations were obtained from six co-operative stores, and the Thoothukudi co-operative store, which quoted the lowest price of Rs 2,282.10, was approved. After Kamaraj's transfer, Vallalar reapproved the decision in February 2020.

NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of Kuppam woman's public assault
TIRUPATI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a shocking incident in Narayanapuram village of Kuppam mandal, Chittoor district, where a woman was tied to a tree and assaulted in front of her son over an unpaid loan. The commission described the act as a serious violation of human rights and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The NHRC also acknowledged the formal complaint submitted by Tirupati MP M Gurumoorthy and said it has been clubbed with the suo motu case. The Commission warned that it is the state government's responsibility to ensure that such inhuman acts are not repeated and emphasised the need for accountability and preventive measures. The incident, which took place on June 16, involved a woman named Sirisha, whose husband had reportedly absconded after taking a loan, leaving behind his wife and three children. In his absence, the creditors allegedly tied Sirisha to a tree and beat her in front of her minor son, triggering widespread outrage.V The case drew immediate attention from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who represents the Kuppam constituency in the State Assembly. He condemned the incident and directed officials to take stringent action. The police arrested those involved and booked them under multiple sections of the BNS. In response to the incident, the State Government has announced a financial assistance package for the victim. Sirisha was granted Rs.5 lakh in aid, and the government has pledged to take responsibility for her children's education. Additionally, she will be allotted 50 cents of land within Kuppam municipality limits to help her rebuild her life.
