Karnataka Governor calls for mutli-stakeholder cooperation to achieve SDGs

The Hindu03-06-2025

'To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), multi-stakeholder cooperation is essential. These goals remain a primary focus, and we in the government have been working assiduously to achieve them at the grassroots level through programmes like Make in India, Swachh Bharat, and others in water, health, farmer support, and State initiatives. Bengaluru, known as India's Silicon Valley and a centre of science and research, is facing many challenges and stress on its resources,' said Thawaarchand Gehlot, Governor of Karnataka, speaking at the Bengaluru Sustainability Conclave organised by O.P. Jindal Global University and RV University.
He added, 'It is important that knowledge sharing, cooperation, and information exchange help mitigate the challenges of climate change. The growing carbon footprint, pollution, deforestation, and other factors have led to a climate crisis, and it is imperative that we address these issues urgently. We need to inform and sensitise people about them. Our campaigns to save energy, water, and other resources are aimed at protecting the environment.'
O.P. Jindal Global University released its 'Sustainable Development Report 2025' at the conclave.

First of all, congratulations to you for assuming the coveted post. How are you feeling about it? Thank you. It feels good to receive such acknowledgements. It also brings a renewed sense of responsibility towards the field I have been associated with and a motivation to do good work for society. Tell us about UNGCNI. Global Compact Network India is one of the United Nations agencies like UNICEF, UNDP, and UNESCO, etc. It was established in India in 2000. UN Global Compact Network is the largest organisation engaged in corporate sustainability across the globe. We are not in a very good state as of now, and there are lots of work to be done. Reasons to the setback is many including investment crunches, not adopting to sustainable development practices in development projects, lack of coordination among departments to adhere to the SDGs, among others. To achieve the goals, not only the govts but the citizens also have to start acting responsibly. What are your visions and plans to address the shortcomings after assuming the post? We are focusing on engaging with more stakeholders in coming days. Our stakeholders are the state govts, union govts, corporate and PSUs. We are also planning to establish four or five regional hubs across the country to ensure better coordination, capacity building with the states. We are also planning to form goal-based sub committees for better monitoring on implementation of the SDGs. Apart from this, UNGCNI is going to target more MSMEs for strengthening our partnerships. How do you think your association with UNGCNI is going to benefit Jharkhand? As I said, we are focusing on building partnerships with various entities and sensitising them more on adhering to the SDGs, which will prove to be beneficial for Jharkhand and the country as well. How can commoners contribute to achieving the SDGs? We all can contribute towards achieving the goals through responsible consumption. Natural resources are limited, we have to make sure how responsibly we consume. For example, while taking a bath, if we use a bucket instead of a shower, we will be able to lower the burden on the planet to a great extent.

"We have identified certain highways which lead towards Nashik, and their upgradation was extremely important. These include roads coming from Dhule, Sambhaji Nagar, Mumbai, Palghar, Nagpur and Gujarat. Along with this, there are some internal roads which also need to be upgraded to support the flow of visitors towards Nashik," said Fadnavis. "The Ring Road project has been approved," said Fadnavis is a short reply. "About the Dwarka circle, it has been decided to complete the work in two phases. The first phase will be for the road which goes up to Kumbh, and it will be taken up on priority. Also, the work order for the second phase will be issued because there are certain intersections which need to be upgraded. We do not want roads to be dug up during Kumbh," said Fadnavis. In a query about Nashik-Trimbak road condition, Fadnavis said, "We will be upgrading the entire stretch to six-lane. Work is going on regarding this." Fadnavis slams Rahul Gandhi Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis slammed Congress neta Rahul Gandhi for criticising the 'Make In India' campaign, saying only assembly is happening here. "Rahul Gandhi has no idea about the issue, he is not even aware of what products are made in India. He should be told that during their (Congress) rule, the Indian economy was at a low point on the global stage. But in the last 11 years, under PM Narendra Modi, the Indian economy is now number four in the world, and soon, we will be number three. During Congress rule we were at the 11th spot. It's time for Rahul (Gandhi) to do his homework regarding this," said Fadnavis. Abu Azmi wants publicity: Fadnavis CM Devendra Fadnavis said Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi only seeks publicity by making controversial statements. Fadnavis was responding to a query about Azmi saying only Muslims are blamed for namaaz on the street, but they never say anything about religious processions of Hindus on the road. Fadnavis said "I believe that Azmi seeks publicity through such statements. I won't give him that publicity and hence, won't comment either. "
