Rossi scores go-ahead goal to boost Columbus Crew to 2-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Diego Rossi's ninth goal of the season capped the scoring for both teams in the first half and the Columbus Crew beat the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 on Saturday.
Columbus (8-3-7) won for the first time since May 3 when it beat Charlotte FC, 4-2. Vancouver fell to 10-2-5. It was the Whitecaps' first MLS loss since a 3-1 defeat against the Chicago Fire on March 22.
Rossi scored the final goal in the 23rd minute as the Crew took advantage of a Vancouver turnover deep in its end. Daniel Gazdag stole a lazy Whitecaps pass and fed Rossi for a right-footed tap at the middle of the box.
Ibrahim Aliyu scored his second goal as a member of the Crew just 68 seconds in for a 1-0 Columbus lead. Aliyu took a pass from Lassi Lappalainen at the center of the box for the score. It was the second-fastest regular-season goal in the Crew's history.
Daniel Rios scored in the 6th minute from the middle outside the box off a pass from Mathias Laborda to level the score.
The Crew reached the back of the net three times in the second half, but the apparent goals were wiped clean due to offside calls.

Jets owner Woody Johnson buys 43% stake in English soccer club Crystal Palace

Associated Press LONDON (AP) — New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is finally set to get his hands on an English soccer team. Premier League side Crystal Palace announced on Monday that Johnson has signed 'a legally binding contract' to buy the shares of fellow American John Textor, who has a 43% stake in the London club. Reports have placed the price between $220 million and $260 million. 'Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club,' Palace said in a statement. 'We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future.' Johnson submitted a bid to buy Chelsea in 2022 but was unsuccessful. The sale of Textor's shares boosts Palace's hopes of playing in the Europa League next season, having qualified thanks to its FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last month. Textor is also a shareholder in French side Lyon, which is set to enter the same competition, and under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, it looked as if Palace could miss out. ___ AP soccer:

F1 owner Liberty Media finally set to seal deal to take control of MotoGP after European approval

Associated Press MADRID (AP) — Formula 1 owner Liberty Media is finally set to complete a deal to take control of motorcycle racing series MotoGP after receiving approval from the European Commission. Liberty Media said Monday the 'unconditional' approval was the last step in completing the deal to buy 84% of Spain-based MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports. 'MotoGP is a highly attractive premium sports asset with incredible racing, a passionate fanbase and a strong cash flow profile," Liberty Media president and CEO Derek Chang said in a statement. "We believe the sport and brand have significant growth potential, which we will look to realize through deepening the connection with the core fan base and expanding to a wider global audience.' Liberty said the deal, which was first announced in April 2024, could go through by July 3. The process was held up in December when the European Commission opened what it called an 'in-depth investigation' into whether the agreement would hike the cost of broadcast rights for motorsports events. Dorna chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta remains in charge of MotoGP but Liberty said he will be joined on the Dorna board by Chase Carey and Sean Bratches, two veterans of Liberty's takeover of F1 in 2017. They were part of its efforts to grow and modernize F1 as a business, especially in the United States. ___ AP auto racing: in this topic

Tommy Fleetwood has touching moment with wife after crushing $3.6 million Travelers Championship finish

This was the other side of a thrilling moment for Keegan Bradley. While Bradley celebrated a home-area win at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut with 'U-S-A' chants serenading the Ryder Cup captain, Tommy Fleetwood left the 18th green after another heartbreaking near-miss at a PGA Tour event. Fleetwood was seen embracing his wife, Clare, after he bogeyed 18 to allow Bradley to steal the win with a clutch birdie putt. AP Fleetwood, 34, now has 42 career top-10s without a victory on the PGA Tour as he continues to come up short in the biggest moments. 'I'm upset now. I'm angry. When it calms down, I'll look at things I did well, look at the things I can learn from …,' the Englishman told reporters afterward. 'I hadn't been in this position all year, so it's been a while, felt like I did a lot of good things, but there are things I can definitely do better. I have to do better.' Fleetwood had a three-stroke lead heading into Sunday, but bogeyed three of the first four holes to open the door for Bradley and Russell Henley. Advertisement Fleetwood still held a one-shot lead at TPC River Highlands heading into the final hole and drilled his driver down the middle of the fairway. After some club choice indecision, Fleetwood left his approach just short of the green. Bradley then hit a brilliant approach five feet short of the hole, and Henley holed out for birdie to move one shot off the lead. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect It was the final signature event of the season, and Bradley earned $3.6 million with the win. Fleetwood and Henley got $1.76 million each for their second-place tie. Advertisement 'The stupid thing to do would be to make this a hindrance to what you do going forward,' Fleetwood said. 'I obviously played great, I put myself in a great position, I was leading the tournament for 71 holes. I just want to make sure I can put myself in this position as soon as possible again and try and correct what I did this time… There's just no point in making it a negative for the future.' Bradley's win adds more intrigue to his Ryder Cup situation, with calls growing for him to select himself as a member of the 12-player American squad for the September showdown with Europe at Bethpage Black. 3 Tommy Fleetwood embraces his wife, Clare, after the Travelers Championship. PGATour/X He is currently in ninth place in the standings, with six players automatically qualifying for the team and the other six being the captain's choices. 'This changes the story a little bit,' Bradley, 39, said. 'I never would have thought about playing if I hadn't won. This definitely opens the door to play. I don't know if I'm going to do it or not, but I certainly have to take a pretty hard look at what's best for the team.'
