South Korea report: domestic sales rise 7% in April
Domestic sales by South Korea's five main automakers combined rose by over 7% to 127,639 units in April 2025 from 118,978 units a year earlier, according to preliminary wholesale data released individually by the manufacturers. The data do not include sales by South Korea's low-volume commercial vehicle manufacturers including Tata-Daewoo and Edison Motors, while import brands are covered in a separate report later in the month.
The domestic vehicle market last month continued to be driven by the recent rollout of new products, particularly by the country's largest automakers Hyundai and Kia. Overall demand in the country remains sluggish, however, due to high household debt and weak sentiment – with consumers spending less on durable goods. Corporate sentiment has also taken a hit due to uncertainty over US trade policies.
The latest economic data show GDP shrank by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2025, after growing by 2.0% in 2024. The central bank continued to cut its benchmark interest rate in February, to 2.75% from a peak of 3.5% in 2024, to help support domestic consumption.
In the first four months of the year the country's five main domestic vehicle manufacturers reported a 3.3% increase in domestic sales to 456,450 units combined, from 441,938 in the same period last year. Hyundai drove the market higher in this period with sales rising by 4.5% to 233,780 units, while Kia's sales increased just slightly to 185,417 units. Renault Korea reported a 160% surge in domestic to 18,850 units, reflecting the recent launch of the new Geely-based Grand Koleos hybrid SUV, while KG Mobility saw its sales drop by 26% to 11,730 units and GM Korea's volumes plunged by 41% to 5,434 units
Global sales by the country's 'big-five' automakers, including vehicles produced overseas, increased slightly to 2,619,244 units in the first four months of 2025 from 2,610,144 units a year earlier – with overseas sales declining slightly to 2,162,794 units from 2,167,755 previously.
Hyundai Motor's global sales increased by 2% to 353,338 vehicles in April 2025 from 346,473 a year earlier, reflecting both stronger domestic and overseas sales. In the four months of the year the company delivered 1,354,458 units, slightly lowered compared with the 1,353,179 units sold previously.
Domestic sales rose by 6% to 67,510 units last month from 63,733 a year earlier, with SUVs accounting for 25,728 units while sales by its luxury brand Genesis amounted to 11,504 units. Year-to-date domestic sales were up by 4.5% to 233,870 units from 223,700 a year earlier.
Overseas sales increased by just over 1% to 285,828 units in April from 282,740 units a year earlier, while year-to-date volumes were 0.8% lower at 1,120,588 from 1,129,479 units, underpinned by strong demand in North America while sales in India weakened. The company's new EV plant in the US state of Georgia became operational last October, producing the Ioniq 5 followed by the Ioniq 9 earlier this year. A Kia model is also set to go into production in 2026. The automaker said it will expand capacity at the plant to 500,000 units per year later in the decade from 300,000 at present.
Hyundai has set a global sales target of 4,174,000 vehicles for 2025, including its Genesis luxury brand, representing a slight increase over 2024 volumes. This includes 710,000 domestic sales and 3,464,000 overseas sales. To achieve this goal, the company said it will focus 'on strengthening its market competitiveness with a stronger range of electrified models, including hybrids and battery electric vehicles, and scaling up local production at its global manufacturing facilities.'
Kia's global sales rose by 5% to 274,437 vehicles in April from 261,283 a year earlier, reflecting stronger domestic and overseas sales. Growth was underpinned by strong demand for recently-launched SUVs such as the Sportage and Sorento, with 47,737 and 23,855 deliveries respectively, and the Seltos with 25,543 units. In the first four months of the year global sales rose by 2.5% to 1,047,085 units from 1,021,797 a year earlier.
Domestic sales rose by 7.4% to 50,005 units last month from 47,505 units a year earlier, with the Sorento being its best-selling model with 8,796 domestic deliveries, followed by the Carnival MPV with 7,592 sales and the Sportage with 6,703 units. Year-to-date domestic sales rose slightly to 185,417 units from 185,127 a year earlier, following a 14% decline in January. The company sold a further 1,149 special purpose vehicles (SPVs), up from 749 a year earlier, most of which were military vehicles delivered domestically.
Overseas sales increased by 4.6% to 223,113 units in April from 213,327 a year earlier and by 3% to 860,519 units year-to-date from 835,470 units, underpinned by a 21% rise in US sales to 273,649 units. The Sportage was the brand's best-selling model overseas last month with 41,034 deliveries, including 16,178 in the US.
Kia is targeting a 4% increase in global sales to 3,216,200 units in 2025, including 550,000 domestic sales, 2,658,000 overseas sales and 8,200 SPV sales, supported by the recent launch of the new K4 and revamped K5 sedans and the Syros SUV in India. In the first quarter of the year the company roll out its new Tasman pickup truck and the EV4, to be followed by the EV5. Its medium-term plan is to sell 4.3 million vehicles globally by 2030, including 1.6 million BEVs.
GM Korea'sglobal sales fell by 6.3% to 41,644 units in April, down from 44,426 units a year earlier, with domestic and overseas sales both declining. Global sales in the four months of the year dropped by 9% to 154,161 units from 169,638 units previously. The Trailblazer SUV and Trax crossover vehicle remain by far the company's best-selling models, with most output shipped overseas.
Domestic sales continued to drop sharply last month, by 42% to 1,326 units from 2,297 units a year earlier, with year-to-date sales plunging by 41% to 5,434 units from 9,216 units - as the automaker struggled with rising competition from other domestic manufacturers and from importers.
Exports declined by 4.3% to 40,318 units in April from 42,129 a year earlier and by over 8% to 148,727 year-to-date from 160,422 units. With around 85% of output shipped to the US last year, GM Korea's CFO Paul Jacobson last month said the company may consider relocating its operations to the US if the recent US import tariff hikes become permanent.
KG Mobility (KGM) reported an 11% fall in global sales to 8,642 vehicles in April from 9,751 units a year earlier, reflecting lower domestic and overseas sales. Total sales in the first four months of the year were down by almost 11% to 34,941 from 39,077 a year earlier. The company, previously known as Ssangyong Motor, was acquired in late 2022 by a consortium led by local steel and chemicals firm KG Group.
Domestic sales fell by 3% to 3,546 units last month from 3,663 a year earlier, resulting in a 26% drop to 11,730 units year-to-date from 15,875 units, as the automaker struggled to keep up with rising competition from other domestic manufacturers and from importers.
Overseas sales dropped by over 10% to 5,386 in April from 6,008 a year earlier, but were still slightly higher at 23,211 units in the first four months of the year from 23,202 units, as the company continued to expand its global market coverage.
KGM plans to further expand its zero-emissions vehicle range, following the launch of a new minivan version of the Torres EVX battery-powered SUV last September. Earlier this year the company launched the new battery-powered Musso EV pickup truck.
KGM has entered into a strategic partnership with China's Chery Automobile Company, involving platform licensing and product sharing aimed at helping it strengthen its SUV line-up. The deal will also give KGM access to readily available new energy vehicle (NEV) technologies including vehicle platforms.
Renault Korea's global sales fell by just over 1% to 10,427 units in April from 10,572 units a year earlier, reflecting sharply lower overseas shipments while domestic sales rebounded strongly from weaker year-earlier levels. In the first four months of the year, global sales were up by 8% to 28,599 units from 26,453 previously.
Domestic sales tripled to 5,252 units last month from 1,780 units in the same month last year, resulting in year-to-date sales surging by 160% to 18,850 from 7,271 units - reflecting the recent launch of the new Geely-based Grand Koleos hybrid SUV. The company recently restructured its assembly plant in Busan, resulting in more production being allocated for the local market.
Exports fell by 41% to 5,175 units in April from 8,792 a year earlier, resulting in a 49% plunge in the first four months of the year to 9,749 from 19,182 units – mostly comprising shipments of the Arkana hybrid crossover vehicle (a rebadged XM3).
Renault Korea last year confirmed it will continue to overhaul its product range with a strong focus on SUVs, BEVs and hybrid vehicles, starting with the launch of the new Geely-based Grand Koleos hybrid SUV last July and the phasing out of its aging SM6 mid-size sedan at the end of last year. 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Review: A Racing Sim You Can Drive on the Road
The latest car news, reviews, and features. It's easy to go gaga over the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N on a short backroad blast or rip around a track. It's mind-blowingly fast and, more impressively, a genuinely unique driving experience. Though I have to admit, I never completely got over the inherent goofiness of fake manual shifting and the video-game interface. I understand why people love this car, but I wasn't sad when my weeklong test came to a close. A curb weight of 4,861 pounds is a lot—but so is an output of 601 horsepower, which can spike to 641 hp with the 10-second N Grin Boost button. The torque figure of 545 lb-ft also increases to 568 when that button is pushed. Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 N can do a zero-to-60-mph run in 3.25 seconds at maximum attack, but MotorTrend recorded an even more dizzying 2.8-second pull and ran the quarter-mile in 11 seconds flat. In a mass-produced car that can also carry four people and a dog comfortably? That's crazy talk—but it's real. Andrew P. Collins The 5 N's specs, grip, responsiveness, and real-time customizability have been discussed ad nauseam on podcasts, in reviews, and here on The Drive . It looks great and loads a lot of cargo because, as you've also probably read, while it may have the shape of an '80s rally car, it's got the footprint of a crossover. Four adults can easily fit, plus luggage. The $70,000 list price is justified, too. A BMW X3 M50 is about the same money, and while that may feel fancier, the Hyundai is far, far quicker. At least, until it runs out of juice, which does happen annoyingly soon. Hyundai's official max range estimate for this car is 221 miles; expect a bit less if you drive as hard as the car invites you to. Former The Drive staff writer Chris Rosales (now at Motor1 ) called out the weak driving range as the 5 N's 'one major flaw,' and yeah, it does make a long day of adventuring less free-wheeling. Where he's at, at the north end of Angeles Crest Highway in California, you could easily rack up 200 miles bombing canyons. Similar story here in rural New York, where I do my relaxation driving—I can put 100 miles on a car just doing weekend errands. This checker-stripe appears all over the place. But as you can see by the scratches in the door card, the car's not made of the most elite materials. Seating materials, however, felt excellent. Rear cargo room is bountiful—this is an SUV, after all. Door handles tuck away when you put the car in drive. The interior door arm rests kind of float on some backlighting. Here's another perspective on that interesting floating interior door trim design. Not much to see under the hood, but at least the motor cover has some decoration on it. This has to be one of the most creative reflector designs on any car right now. When you do need a charge, the car's supposed to be able to go from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes if you can connect to a 350 kW DC fast charger. A 50 kW DC charger should be able to do it in one hour and 10 minutes. Charging the car to max from 10% on a 240-volt outlet at 10.9 kW would take 7 hours and 20 minutes—even that's not terrible as long as you can just have it plugged in overnight. The cockpit layout is tidy but not aggressively minimalist, and the sporty seats are taut and supportive. It can be driven in near-silence, but the Ioniq 5 N has no chill. It wants to party. It wants to be driven hard. It might even be too stiff to be practical in some regions. Rough roads felt extremely unforgiving to me, and there are a whole lot of those in the Hudson Valley. Andrew P. Collins I'm not saying the car should be softer. On the contrary, the ride felt very well matched to the vehicle's vibe and intentions. And while it punishes you in potholes, it does reward you with a good feel for where the car is below you. Arguably, the 5 N's best party trick is its customizability. As our former reviews editor Chris Tsui wrote wrote last year after his drive at Laguna Seca: 'Eleven driver-selectable, fully variable levels of front-rear torque output mean Ioniq 5 N can go from fully FWD to fully RWD (70 rear, 30 front is the default), while an electronic limited-slip differential and 'N Drift Optimizer' function can simulate a clutch-kick to make smoky slides easier.' I was completely blown away by that idea when I first read about it. Now having now driven it on public roads for an extended period of time, I have some salient thoughts. If you're a car nerd, you can amuse yourself for hours running the same loop, trying it with different power distribution. You'll be able to enjoy and appreciate it at socially acceptable speeds, too. The sliding, I have to admit, I simply could not find a place that seemed safe enough to drift. This brings me to another key factor in what this car's like to drive: You really need to treat it with respect. You can sneeze on the accelerator and warp into the next zip code. An EV that's idling? It's not really, but it's a weirdly impressive imitation. The other images here are just to give you a sense of how deep you can go in the car's customization menu. If you like to tinker with settings, you're going to love this car. Andrew P. Collins But I'm happy to confirm that, unlike with some modern performance vehicles, you don't need to drive this thing like you're in a Mission: Impossible movie to enjoy it. Lastly, you can also select between a traditional EV experience and a simulated 'engine,' where you get a tach that climbs as you push the tall pedal, and then 'shift' with the paddles. The way the car bucks as you 'shift' and stutters if you hit the 'rev limiter' is spectacularly realistic. As a fan of science and technology, I'm deeply impressed with Hyundai's achievement in creating what is essentially a drivable video game. That said, as a driving enthusiast and open-road appreciator, the 5 N kind of leaves me feeling like the kid in this meme: TheOdd1sOut/YouTube I know—one could argue that every modern performance car has a degree of this experience. With today's traction management tech and almost-everything-by-wire, how connected to the road are you, really, in anything built after about 2015? In principle, the idea of a manual mode that can only affect performance adversely, and forces the computer to behave exclusively for my amusement, feels kind of cringey, just like the sound piped in to give the motor an aural character. I'm glad Hyundai allows you to silence it with the push of a button. As long as you can work with a 200-ish mile range EV, this is an easy one to endorse. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is absolutely a compelling option if your car budget is in the $70,000 neighborhood. It's got a great combo of novelty, style, and serious speed. Personally, I would rather get a softer, cheaper EV for getting around and keep my 22-year-old manual Bimmer for fun. I can push that E46 and probably not even break the speed limit. Andrew P. It's cliché to say, but new hardware just doesn't hit the same, even if it does a perfect job simulating a transmission. The other side of that is something I touched on above—the speeds you can hit in this car without even thinking about it. I get that it's cool, and I certainly admire the capability from a technological standpoint. But at the risk of sounding crotchety, do we need mass-market vehicles that snap to 60 mph in under three seconds? The Ioniq 5 N didn't convert me to categorical EV superiority, but it impressed the hell out of me. There's no question this is a good car; it's just not the ultimate performance experience. Weber Grill Restaurant to be first tenant in Orland Park downtown development
Weber Grill Restaurant will open a location in Orland Park next year, becoming the first tenant announced for the village's downtown development project northwest of La Grange Road and 143rd Street. The company is owned by the same family that makes the grills, which are used to prepare meals at the restaurants. Weber Grill will build an 8,500-square-foot space at the southwest corner of La Grange and 142nd Street, said Ramzi Hassan, president of Edwards Realty Co. Orland Park-based Edwards was selected by the village to develop that has been called the Main Street Triangle project. 'This is exactly the type of tenant we envisioned when we first imagined downtown Orland Park,' Hassan said in a news release announcing the restaurant's plans. 'Weber Grill represents a high-quality, experience-driven restaurant that aligns perfectly with our vision to create a dynamic, walkable destination for the community.' Planned to open next spring, the restaurant will feature indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a hands-on cooking school offering both public and private cooking classes, according to Weber Grill Restaurants. The company also has restaurants in downtown Chicago and suburban locations in Lombard and Schaumburg. 'We're thrilled to bring the unique Weber Grill experience to the new downtown Orland Park,' Jon Crost, chief operating officer of Weber Grill Restaurants, said in a news release. 'This location allows us to connect with a vibrant and growing community while being part of a visionary redevelopment that emphasizes both quality and community.' Hassan said Friday that Weber 'is a really good brand that's a household name,' and its decision to open in Orland Park could attract other tenants. He said that Weber was looking to the Orland Park market for a restaurant, but 'they were more interested in the type of development they are joining.' 'They had to find the right fit,' Hassan said. He said Edwards has been very selective about the users and businesses coming in to the development, and said the Weber Grill Restaurant could be destination drawing customers from beyond the Orland Park area. 'It's not like they have 300 restaurants all over the country,' Hassan said. Edwards plans to develop more than 140,000 square feet of entertainment, retail and office space. No residential space is planned. An expansion of Crescent Park, to be renamed Heroes Park, is included, and what is now a stormwater detention pond in the northeast corner of the triangle would be enhanced with fountains. The company and village held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the downtown project in March. Edwards owns and operates Orland Park Crossing, a retail center northeast of La Grange and 143rd, directly to the east of the downtown development. The downtown development would be situated around the Ninety7Fifty on the Park apartments, University of Chicago Medicine Center for Advanced Care, a parking garage and the 143rd Street Metra station. Hassan said he expects Edwards to break ground in spring on space for a second tenant, which would be on a site west of La Grange on the south side of 142nd.
