HMC highlights tobacco control expertise in Dubai

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Dr Ahmad Mohammad Al Mulla, senior consultant in Public Health and Disease Control and director of the Tobacco Control Center at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)—a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Tobacco Dependence Treatment—participated in a workshop organised by Emirates Health Services. The event was held at the Primary Healthcare Department in Dubai on May 26. At the event, HMC showcased the expertise of the Tobacco Control Center and emphasised that Qatar is among one of the first in the region to introduce tobacco cessation services.
Dr Al Mulla presented an overview of the efforts undertaken by HMC and the Tobacco Control Center, highlighting key achievements in combating tobacco use in Qatar. He also provided a summary of the tobacco control laws issued by the State and their implementation, while sharing statistics on the prevalence of tobacco use in Qatar and across countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Dr Al Mulla further outlined the economic burden of the tobacco epidemic on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and emphasised the pivotal role of the Tobacco Control Center in reducing tobacco use through ongoing educational and awareness activities within the community.
Dr Al Mulla outlined the free treatment services provided by HMC's Tobacco Control Center's cessation clinics, including the use of medications, nicotine replacement therapies, and laser treatment. He discussed psychological counselling and behavioural modification methods offered to tobacco users, in addition to the types of medical devices used to measure carbon monoxide levels and assess lung function.
Dr Al Mulla praised the role of HMC in supporting the Tobacco Control Center by providing free treatments to patients, emphasizing the critical importance of preventive services in reducing the spread of tobacco-related diseases.
He also thanked the organisers of the workshop for the opportunity to present the effective role played by HMC in tobacco control and the importance of continued collaboration between HMC, represented by the Tobacco Control Center and Emirates Health Services.

WHO honours HMC's Tobacco Control Centre with 2025 World No Tobacco Day Award
Tribune News Network Doha The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognised Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) Tobacco Control Centre with the 2025 World No Tobacco Day Award. The award recognises the Centre's significant efforts in reducing tobacco use and helping the public in Qatar and the Eastern Mediterranean region to quit all forms of tobacco use. HMC's Tobacco Control Centre, which has been a WHO Collaborating Centre since 2017, was selected as one of the award recipients in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This marks the second time the Centre has received the award, having first been honoured in 2021. The award was presented by Dr. Rayana Bou Haka, WHO representative in Qatar, in the presence of Dr. Ahmed Al Mohammed, HMC's deputy chief medical officer for medical services and chairman of the Department of Medicine. Dr Ahmad Mohamed Al Mulla, director of HMC's Tobacco Control Centre, expressed his pride in the Centre receiving the award for the second time. He praised the dedication of the Centre's team and the achievements in tobacco control in Qatar and the Eastern Mediterranean region. He said: 'HMC's Tobacco Control Centre has played a pioneering role in helping members of the public quit all forms of tobacco. This recognition by WHO reflects the positive outcomes of the hard work carried out by the Centre's team and its impact on many tobacco users in our community.' Dr. Rayana Bou Haka also commended the Centre's local and regional activities and said the award was well-deserved. She thanked the Centre's staff for their continued efforts in tobacco control in Qatar and the region and emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between the Centre and WHO, given the significant value of its tobacco control programs. The Tobacco Control Centre organizes educational and awareness initiatives targeting school and university students, as well as employees in ministries and public institutions. The Centre also delivers training programs for healthcare professionals and community organizations in Qatar and across the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition, it provides smoking cessation services and conducts research in the field of tobacco cessation. Dr Ahmad Al Mulla extended his gratitude to HMC leadership and the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office, represented by Dr Fatimah El Awa, WHO's Regional Advisor for the Tobacco Free Initiative, as well as the WHO Tobacco Free Initiative Office in Geneva, for their continuous support of the Centre's programs. He noted that this support contributes to the positive impact of the Centre's tobacco control activities at all levels in Qatar and the wider region. WHO annually recognizes individuals and institutions from each of its six regions on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day for their outstanding contributions to tobacco control. The recognition includes honorary awards, special certificates of appreciation from the WHO Director-General, and awards specifically related to World No Tobacco Day.

Over 5,000 benefit from endowment-based dialysis project at HMC: Awqaf ministry
DOHA: A total of 5,043 patients have benefited from the Endowment-Based Dialysis Project at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) from 2020 to the end of 2024, supported by the Healthcare Endowment Fund under the General Directorate of Endowments at the Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs. In a statement, the Ministry of Awqaf noted that the dialysis project, supported by the Healthcare Endowment Fund, serves as a pioneering humanitarian model of partnership between the healthcare and charitable sectors and has significantly contributed to improving the quality of life for thousands of kidney failure patients in Qatar. Executive Director of the Social Service Department at HMC, Bashayer Al Rashed emphasized that the project aims to provide dialysis services to low-income patients, helping to improve their quality of life and ease the financial burden on them and their families. She pointed out that the endowment support covers the provision of medical equipment, supplies, and treatment costs for patients in need, which has strengthened the continuity and quality of services and enabled the corporation to meet the growing demand for dialysis sessions. Al Rashed explained that beneficiary selection is carried out according to clear criteria that consider health status, social circumstances, income level, and the number of required dialysis sessions, in coordination with the relevant authorities. Beneficiary data is also regularly reviewed to ensure fair and equitable distribution of support. She added that the project has made a significant humanitarian impact by improving patients' psychological well-being and enabling them to resume their roles within their families and communities. She also confirmed that a current study is underway to expand the project's scope to include psychological support and health education for patients and their families. Al Rashed further noted that the project contributes to achieving the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focuses on ensuring good health and well-being, by providing treatment without financial burden to patients and enhancing access to quality medical services. The Executive Director of the Social Service Department at HMC expressed her gratitude to the General Directorate of Endowments and all generous donors, praising the ongoing partnership that strengthens social solidarity and supports national efforts to advance healthcare development in Qatar.
