Indian student dies in Canada; consulate extends support
Vancouver [Canada], June 20 (ANI): An Indian student studying at the University of Calgary in Canada has died, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver said on Thursday.
The Consulate expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying it was 'saddened by the sudden demise' of the student, identified as Tanya Tyagi.
'We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at University of Calgary,' the Consulate said in a post on X.
It further added, 'The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with his family & friends of the deceased.'

Earlier in March this year, a 20-year-old Indian citizen and permanent US resident from Chantilly, studying at Pittsburgh University, was reported missing while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.
She was last seen on March 6.
'The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) is actively assisting in the investigation of a missing college student on vacation in the Dominican Republic. Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old female from Chantilly and a student at the University of Pittsburgh, was reported missing on Thursday, March 6, 2025,' according to Loudoun County Sheriff's Office's official statement.
'Konanki, a citizen of India, is a permanent resident of the United States and was reported to be vacationing with five female college friends at a resort in Punta Cana,' it added.
According to sources, she disappeared while walking on the beach at a hotel in Punta Cana, La Altagracia province, east of the Dominican Republic.
The LCSO was working closely with our federal partners at the US Department of State, FBI, DEA, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), as well as the University of Pittsburgh police, to support the ongoing investigation by the Dominican National Police.
According to Spanish media sources, 'Last seen on March 6, 2025, at 4:50 am on the beach of the Riu Punta Cana Hotel,' says the image, which includes a portrait of the young Hindu woman. According to the file, Sudiksha has black hair and brown eyes.
She was last seen wearing a brown two-piece bikini, large round earrings, a metal anklet on her right leg, yellow and steel bracelets on her right hand and another multi-coloured bracelet on her left hand, the sources added. (ANI)

Former England footballer Trevor Sinclair has been declared bankrupt after a judge accused him of 'burying his head in the sand' for failing to pay a five-figure amount related to his media work in 2021 and 2022. In the circumstances, the court finds that Mr Sinclair is unable to pay his debts as they fall due and it will make the bankruptcy order.' Sinclair has yet to issue a public statement regarding the bankruptcy.

Highlighting that the Supreme Court had held so-called bulldozer justice to be illegal, Chief Justice BR Gavai on Wednesday said that the 'executive cannot become judge, jury and executioner all at once', The Times of India reported. The chief justice said that the right to shelter was a fundamental right, PTI reported. There are no provisions in Indian law that allow for the demolition of property as a punitive measure. However, the practice has become commonplace in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states. In November, the Supreme Court held as illegal the practice of demolishing properties of persons accused of crimes as a punitive measure. It said that processes must be followed before removing allegedly illegal encroachments. On Wednesday, referring to the judgement, Gavai said: '…the court held that such arbitrary demolitions, which bypass legal processes, violate the rule of law and the fundamental right to shelter under Article 21'. Gavai also said that for common citizens, building a house was 'often the culmination of years of hard work, dreams and aspirations', The Times of India reported. 'A house is not just a property but embodies the collective hopes of a family or individuals for stability, security and a future,' the chief justice added. The chief justice made the comments at a gathering of judges in Italy where he spoke about the role of the Constitution in delivering socio-economic justice.

Amusement park horror: Octopus ride seat snaps mid-spin in Maharashtra; one killed
A day of leisure at an amusement park turned tragic on Wednesday after a ride malfunctioned at Sayajiraje Park in Maharashtra's Solapur district, claiming the life of a 35-year-old man and leaving another seriously injured. According to a report by Times of India, Tushar Dhumal, a resident of Bhigwan in Pune district, died after one of the arms of the octopus-themed ride suddenly detached while operating at high speed. His friend, Vaibhav Rupnavar (30), suffered a serious head injury and underwent surgery at a private hospital in Akluj on Thursday morning. According to police, the octopus ride, designed with multiple rotating arms, each fitted with four seats, was operating at full velocity when one of the arms broke away, the report added. A tourist captured the aftermath on video, showing bystanders and what appeared to be family members rushing to the scene to help. The group was occupying all four seats on one of the ride's arms at the time of the incident. Following the incident, Tushar Dhumal's brother, Abhijeet Dhumal, lodged a complaint with Akluj police, alleging negligence and poor maintenance by the park's management. He also stated that the ride operator had increased the speed beyond safe limits, contributing to the failure, the report further added. Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR against the park's manager, ride operator, and staff under sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence), 125(A) (acts endangering life or personal safety of others), 125(B) (rash or negligent act causing grievous hurt), and 3(5) (act causing wrongful loss to others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
