Liberia: President Boakai Congratulates Sierra Leone and the Netherlands

The President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has sent two separate messages of congratulations to the President of Sierra Leone and the King of the Kingdom of Netherlands on the occasions marking those nations' Independence and National Day Anniversaries, respectively. Coincidentally, these great nations celebrate this very important Day on Sunday, April 27, 2025. According to the Foreign Ministry release, President Boakai has on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Liberia and in his own name, extended heartfelt felicitations to His Excellency Mr. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, on the momentous occasion commemorating the 64th Independence Anniversary of that sisterly country, the Republic of Sierra Leone.
The Liberian leader stressed that as the two nations continue to collaborate in advancing the principles of the Mano River Union (MRU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN) which are dedicated to fostering peace, security, and cooperation among all nations, he is confident that the aspirations of Sierra Leone will be realized. 'May the strong and historic ties between Liberia and Sierra Leone continue to grow for the mutual benefit of our two nations and peoples', President Boakai stated. To His Majesty Willem-Alexander, King of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, President Boakai extended warm congratulations and best wishes to the people of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on the occasion of that great country National Day on behalf of the Government and People of Liberia.
President Boakai stated that this landmark day does not only mark the rich heritage and resilience of the Dutch people but also serves as a moment to reflect on the strong and enduring bonds between the two nations. He added that Liberia and the Netherlands have share a historically significant relationship that is rooted in shared values of diplomacy, economic cooperation, and mutual respect. The Foreign Ministry release further stated that the Liberian leader recognized and applauded the Netherlands' forward-thinking approach, particularly at this critical juncture in the geopolitical relations. President Boakai added that Liberia is especially grateful for the ongoing partnership in areas such as trade, human rights, and sustainable development. He furthered that as the nations continue to build on their shared history, his Government look forward to deepening the collaboration in the spirit of equality, solidarity and mutual progress.

Pakistan recommends US President Donald Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The Pakistani government has decided to formally recommend US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his "decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership" during the recent conflict between India and Pakistan. The conflict ended in a ceasefire after several days of cross-border shelling. In a post shared on X, the government said the international community had "bore witness to unprovoked and unlawful Indian aggression, which constituted a grave violation of Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, resulting in the tragic loss of innocent lives, including women, children, and the elderly." The post further read that "at a moment of heightened regional turbulence", President Trump "demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi." It continued that the US president "de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation, ultimately securing a ceasefire and averting a broader conflict between the two nuclear states that would have had catastrophic consequences for millions of people in the region and beyond," as reported by Dawn. "This intervention stands as a testament to his [Trump's] role as a genuine peacemaker and his commitment to conflict resolution through dialogue," it added. "Durable peace in South Asia would remain elusive until the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions concerning Jammu and Kashmir," it observed. The government noted that President Trump's leadership during the 2025 Pakistan-India crisis "manifestly showcases the continuation of his legacy of pragmatic diplomacy and effective peace-building". In conclusion, the post read that Pakistan remains hopeful that Trump's "earnest efforts" will continue to contribute towards regional and global stability, particularly in the context of ongoing crises in the Middle East, including the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza and the deteriorating escalation involving Iran, as reported by Dawn. Trump has repeatedly said that the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours agreed to a ceasefire after talks mediated by the US, and that the hostilities ended after he urged the countries to focus on trade instead of war, Dawn reported. The cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan was reportedly agreed upon following a call from Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai. During the conversation, the Pakistani DGMO proposed an end to hostilities, which was accepted by the Indian side, leading to a cessation of cross-border firing and air intrusions starting from 5:00 pm on May 10. However, Lieutenant General Ghai later disclosed that the cessation of hostilities was short-lived, as Pakistan violated the agreement with cross-border firing and drone intrusions just hours after it took effect. Liberia Wins Bid to Host the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Youth & Sports Development Centre

The Republic of Liberia is proud to announce through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that it has officially won the bid to host the ECOWAS Youth&Sports Development Centre (EYSDC), a key regional institution under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The decision was made following a competitive selection process initiated by the ECOWAS Commission in light of recent institutional relocations triggered by the withdrawal of some Member States from the regional bloc. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which led Liberia's bid to host one of the vacated ECOWAS institutions, welcomed the news with deep appreciation and a renewed sense of national pride. Liberia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, extended heartfelt gratitude to ECOWAS member states. 'This is a historic moment for Liberia. We are honored to be entrusted with hosting the EYSDC and reaffirm our commitment to regional integration and youth empowerment,' said Foreign Minister Nyanti. The Foreign Minister acknowledged the pivotal role of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., the chief architect of Liberia's foreign policy, whose unwavering support was instrumental in the successful bid. She also commended Mr. Morley Kamara, Economic Advisor to the President, for his support to the bid process, aligning it with Liberia's broader economic diplomacy agenda. The General Services Agency (GSA) was recognized for its effective coordination and oversight of the logistics and infrastructural details included in Liberia's application. The Minister further expressed appreciation to Senator Edwin Snowe, for his advocacy for Liberia to seek the hosting of a regional institution. As background, Liberia had expressed interest in hosting three of four ECOWAS institutions namely, West Africa Health Organization (WAHO); ECOWAS Youth&Sports Development Centre (EYSDC) and Water Resources Coordination Centre (WRCC) previously located in Member States that have exited the regional bloc. Of the 12 countries eligible to bid, Côte d'Ivoire was selected to host WAHO, Guinea will host the WRCC, and Guinea-Bissau the RAHC. Liberia's selection as host of the EYSDC marks a significant achievement in its regional engagement and diplomacy. The successful bid not only enhances Liberia's standing in the ECOWAS community but also promises long-term benefits in the areas of youth engagement, education, sports diplomacy, job creation, and regional visibility. The Government of Liberia reaffirms its readiness to ensure a smooth and timely transition of the Centre's operations and infrastructure to Monrovia and calls upon development partners and stakeholders to support the next phase of implementation.
