Stories from Seatown – one of the oldest parts of Dundalk
Declan Mallon of Upstate Theatre Project recorded conversations with several residents over a number of months with contributors who reflected on personal and social histories of the area.
The project includes oral testimonies and reminisces from Aileen O'Donoghue, Alan Moore, Assumpta Gray, Brendan Lennon, Carlo Cristini, Eileen Connolly, Eileen McCann, Ian Bridges, Jinx Lennon, Martin Shields and Michael Stafford.
Brendan Lennon, who moved to Seatown when he was one year of age in 1929 says that 'we grew up acknowledging the fact that Seatown was somehow special. It was a very happy kind of an area. Neighbours used to come in and out. If you were short of a sugar or tea or butter or whatever. Neighbours would just say to them, you know, you just go across the road and get something there.'
The series of recordings covers a multitude of topics from work experience, schooling to social histories. Assumpta Gray talks about the day the descendant of the Jewish family who lived in her house called to the door and how she and Peter Kavanagh of the Dundalk Democrat delved into the history of 'Little Jerusalem' as Broughton Street was once referred to.
The recordings are being passed over to the Louth County Museum where they will be made available for the public to listen back to. Excerpts from the recordings will be broadcast on Dundalk FM on Saturday at 9am on June 21 and a further selection on Saturday June 28 (repeated on Sundays at 5pm).
Paul Hayes, Director of An Táin Arts Centre spoke about the hope that people in Dundalk might begin to add to this small collection and begin donating their own recordings to the museum.
"Oral histories hold a great wealth of knowledge and specificity that compliments the more general histories that are so well documented. But with each generation you find that those stories can be lost and simply not recorded. It is ironic that we have the technology literally in our hands but haven't used it in this way to any great extent. So start recording those recollections is the message'.
The project partnerships were crucial and special thanks go to Brian Walsh of Louth County Museum, Alan Byrne of Dundalk FM and Sophie Coyle for all their help in seeing the idea realised.

Bloomsday in an English graveyard
KINGSTHORPE Cemetery in Northampton on June 16 will be the venue for a celebration by the Triskellion Theatre Company of Bloomsday, the day that James Joyce set his novel Ulysses. June 16, 1904 was the day that Leopold Bloom, a Jewish salesman wanders round Dublin capturing a day in the life of Dublin's more marginalised citizens. Joyce's recounting of that fictional dander is generally regarded as one of the foremost literary works in the English language. Kingsthorpe Cemetery may seem at first to be an odd choice, but this is the last resting place of Lucia Anna Joyce, the only daughter of James Joyce and Nora Barnacle. Lucia, at one time a talented professional dancer, was born in Trieste where the Joyces lived for some 11 years, and where part of Ulysses was completed. In the 1920s she had a short relationship with the young Samuel Beckett. Sadly, Anna's mental health deteriorated over the years — at one time she was treated by Carl Jung in Zurich. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and ultimately remained a patient at St. Andrew's Psychiatric Hospital in Northampton until her death in 1982. In tribute to Lucia Joyce, two local writers in Northampton have written a play called Letters to Lucia. This will be performed this year at Lucia's graveside by the Triskellion Theatre Company, founded by Gerry Molumby from Thurles in Tipperary. There will be readings from Ulysses, the folk band the Tim Finnegans will be appearing, along with guest speakers who'll outline the Joycean connection with Northampton. Richard Rose will outline Lucia Joyce's place in Northampton. Triskellion has been presenting recitals and musical interludes from Ulysses in the cemetery, dressed of course in suitable turn of the century Dublin garb since 2005 Other performers at the Northampton regularly include the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, and Sean Cannon of the Dubliners. 'Now she wasn't under scrutiny, being like papped, but she looked good, and she couldn't feel her face. 'She was medicated, which some would say is the best part. She was fine.' What is a face lift and how quick is the recovery? A FACE lift (technically called a rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic surgical procedure which tries to reduce visible signs of ageing in the face and neck. The procedure begins with either general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation to ensure you're comfortable and pain-free. The surgeon makes incisions based on the type of face lift. The surgeon lifts the skin and underlying tissues (SMAS layer – superficial musculoaponeurotic system). Fat may be sculpted, removed, or redistributed. The underlying muscle and connective tissues are tightened and repositioned to create a more youthful look. The skin is gently laid back over the newly repositioned contours and incisions are closed with sutures (medical stitch) or skin adhesives. Recovery time varies, but most people return to normal activities within two to four weeks. MUM'S FACE LIFT Katherine previously revealed that she paid '50 grand' for her mum to have a face lift. Speaking on Katherine defended getting work done and said: 'I think there are people who look at plastic surgery, cosmetic, you know, treatments, anything, and they feel sad. 9 Katherine said she bought her mum a face lift as a gift Credit: Getty 'They're like, 'there are more important things in life'. 'Those are the funniest comments when men will try to be allies, and they'll come in and they'll go, 'do you know, ladies, men don't actually want you to'. 'And I go, 'nothing that we do is for you at all. I don't care what you think'. ''I don't care if you live or die.'.'
