AIADMK announces nominees for June 19 Rajya Sabha polls
Tamil Nadu's main opposition
AIADMK
on Sunday announced two candidates for the June 19 biennial election to the Rajya Sabha from the state.
Party's advocate wing secretary, former legislator, IS Inbadurai and AIADMK Chengelpet-East District party presidium chairman, also an ex-MLA, M Dhanapal were the nominees announced by AIADMK general secretary, Edappadi K Palaniswami.
On July 24, 2025, six RS members from Tamil Nadu will retire and it includes PMK's Anbumani Ramadoss and MDMK top leader Vaiko.

Out of the 6 seats, based on its strength and that of its allies in the State Assembly, DMK could easily win 4 seats and main opposition AIADMK could win 2 seats, with support from allies, including the BJP.
The ruling DMK has already announced 3 candidates and allotted one seat to ally, Makkal Needhi Maiam, which named its founder Kamal Haasan as its candidate.

The DMK re-nominated its incumbent member in the Upper House, senior advocate P Wilson and named its Salem-based leader SR Sivalingam and Ruqayya Malik alias Kavignar Salma, a poet, writer and party office-bearer.
All the six nominees, 3 from DMK, 2 from AIADMK and Haasan are all set to be declared elected unopposed and a contest is apparently not on the cards.

ECI launches 23 new reforms to strengthen electoral process
Vijayawada: In a move to bolster the electoral process, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has rolled out 23 new initiatives spanning six key areas — electors, political parties, election staff, legal stakeholders, procedural reforms, and internal enhancements within the commission. During an informal briefing in Velagapudi on Friday, P Pawan, deputy director (media division), said the ECI introduced a first-of-its-kind mobile deposit facility at polling booths. This service, aimed at easing the voting experience, was piloted during the recently held bye-elections for five assembly seats across four states. Among other initiatives, the ECI has increased the number of polling stations and capped the maximum number of voters per station at 1,200. To improve accessibility, additional booths are now being established in high-rise buildings and residential colonies to encourage greater voter participation. Nagpur: Organised crime is not limited by borders and has a devastating impact on the country's economy and internal security by enabling terrorism , Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court observed while overturning a lower court order that denied police custody of a member of a crime syndicate. Justice Urmila Joshi-Phalke, while granting seven-day police custody to Lalu Yadav , 33, under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), said, "organised crime is a serious threat to society and is fuelled by illegal wealth generated by contract killing, extortion, narcotics trade, ransom kidnappings, money laundering, and protection rackets." The court rejected the special MCOCA court's May 3 ruling, which denied police custody on the limited ground that the probe was focused on tracing bank accounts and property. Justice Joshi-Phalke said the special court failed to consider crucial aspects of the investigation, including the accused's ongoing role in a larger organised crime syndicate. "MCOCA can be invoked even if direct crime involvement is absent, but syndicate nexus is established," the judge said. "Black money generated by organised crime has had a serious adverse effect on our economy. Yadav was arrested in a March 14 assault case registered in Yerla, Kalmeshwar, where he and a co-accused allegedly attacked a man with a sickle. Though the case was initially registered under Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), further investigation revealed a pattern of serious, repeat offences allegedly committed for pecuniary gain — prompting the application of MCOCA. The prosecution submitted that Yadav had at least nine criminal cases against him, with seven still pending. "He is a repeat offender operating for economic gain. His actions fit the definition of continuing unlawful activity under MCOCA," the state counsel contended, while urging custodial interrogation to investigate deeper links within the crime syndicate. The high court agreed, stressing that even if an individual may not have committed a particular act of organised crime directly, their nexus with a syndicate or with repeated unlawful acts could still justify invoking MCOCA. "A nexus with the crime syndicate is enough to attract the Act," Justice Joshi-Phalke said, citing Supreme Court's precedent in the Ranjitsing Brahmajeetsing Sharma case. She ruled that police must be given a fair opportunity to probe syndicate structures, pecuniary trails, and unlawful activities under the wider framework of MCOCA. "In light of the legislative intent, denial of custody would amount to frustrating the purpose of the law," the court said while quashing the lower court's orders.

Operation Sindoor not over, paused after Pakistan pleading: Rajnath Singh
UDHAMPUR/SRINAGAR: Operation Sindoor was paused only after Pakistan pleaded for a ceasefire, defence minister Rajnath Singh said Saturday, adding that the operation was not over yet, and India was ready to take any action against terrorism. Addressing troops of Army's Udhampur-based Northern Command on the 11th International Day of Yoga, Singh said: "Operation Sindoor is the natural progression of surgical strike of 2016 and the airstrike of 2019. It was executed in such a way that Pakistan requested for a ceasefire, and only then we put a pause. As I have said earlier, Operation Sindoor is not over yet. India is fully prepared to take all kinds of action against terrorism. " Singh warned Pakistan that the military operation - a response to the Pahalgam attack - was a clear message that it will face the consequences for supporting terror activities against India. Stating that the country's social and communal unity was targeted through the Pahalgam attack, Singh asserted that Operation Sindoor had conveyed to Pakistan that its policy of bleeding India with thousand cuts would not succeed. Pakistan wanted to weaken India from within, but it should never forget that just like Major Somnath Sharma, Brigadier Usman, too, had sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of the country, Singh said. Singh appreciated the inclination of the armed forces towards yoga, saying it had a direct impact on their discipline and focus. "Yoga gives clarity to the people in chaos. It is an art, science, philosophy and spirituality. It makes us proactive, not reactive."
