Holland America leans into luxury travel trend with culinary cruises

Calling all foodies: Holland America Line just unveiled a series of 'Culinary Ambassador' sailings for 2025 and 2026, featuring exclusive onboard events hosted by celebrity chefs and beverage experts, including Masaharu Morimoto, David Burke, and Ivy Mix.
As travelers demand more than buffets and banquet fare, cruise lines are doubling down on celebrity chef partnerships, regionally inspired menus, and culinary programming like cooking classes.
From sushi counters designed by Iron Chef Morimoto to craft cocktail classes and sommelier-led tastings, food and beverage offerings have become a key differentiator — and a powerful lever to attract higher-spending, experience-driven travelers.
The immersive food-and-drink experiences are part of a growing strategy among cruise lines to stand out in a crowded, experience-driven market.
'Dining has become an essential part of how people explore the world, and our Culinary Ambassador program allows us to offer something truly special — an experience that goes beyond the plate,' Holland America's Vice President of Food, Beverage and Rooms, Michael Stendebach said in a statement.Cruises featuring a Culinary Ambassador will offer engaging activities where the experts share their knowledge, techniques and tips. For the chef ambassadors, guests can attend a live cooking demonstration led by the chef, join a coffee chat to learn more about them, and dine at an intimate, reservation-only dinner with a curated menu hosted by the chef. The beverage experts will offer tastings, special events and host a pairing dinner in a specialty restaurant.'Through the Culinary Ambassador cruises, we can bring some of the world's most celebrated experts on board to elevate the journey. It's not just about eating well for our guests — it's about learning, tasting something new, having fun and perhaps getting some tips to use in their own kitchens,' Stendeach said.
In addition to Morimoto and Burke, Holland America Line Culinary Ambassador chefs include Ethan Stowell and Jacques Torres. Besides Mix, who created cocktails for cruises in Mexico, the Culinary Ambassador beverage experts who created regionally inspired cocktails for the cruise line's bars and menus, include Sam Ross (Alaska), Tess Posthumus (Northern Europe), and David Wondrich and Jeff Berry (Caribbean). Master Tea Blender Steve Schwartz also will join a Culinary Ambassador cruise in Asia.
For the remainder of 2025 and into 2026, the options for a Culinary Ambassador Cruise include:
Zuiderdam, Voyage of the Vikings, Chef Burke will be on board a segment of the cruise Aug. 7-12, 2025, from Dublin, Ireland, to Reykjavik, Iceland.
Nieuw Amsterdam, 7-Day Baja Peninsula, Bartender Ivy Mix will be on board Nov. 15-22, 2025, sailing roundtrip from San Diego.
Volendam, 2026 Grand World Voyage, Master Tea Blender Schwartz will be on board March 25-30, 2026, from Singapore to Halong Bay (Hanoi), Vietnam.
Volendam, 2026 Grand World Voyage, Chef Morimoto will be on board while the ship is in Japan, dates to be announced.
Volendam, 2026 Grand World Voyage, Chef Stowell will be on board April 29 – May 3, 2026, from Seattle, Washington, to San Diego, California.
Chef David Burke enhances the menu at Pinnacle Grill, adding contemporary flavors and signature recipes. Lale chats with Braun, who in 1992 became the first Black woman elected to the US senate, about crossing paths with Dr. Martin King, Jr., campaigning alongside the likes of Maya Angelou and Gloria Steinem, and lessons learned from the communities she served as US Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa. Lale Arikoglu: Hi, there. I'm Lale Arikoglu, and on today's episode of Women Who Travel, I'm talking to a lawyer, political pioneer and activist. She's Carol Moseley Braun, who in 1992 became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate. She served seven years as a Democrat representing Illinois. A lifelong traveler, she says becoming U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa in 1999 was a dream come true, and today she chairs the United States African Development Foundation. Ambassador Braun's memoir, which is in bookstores now, is called Trailblazer and dedicated to her grandmother. Her ancestors moved north in the Great Migration. They were farmers from Alabama and musicians from New Orleans, and now she's talking to me from her home in Chicago. How is Chicago because it is pouring with rain in New York? Carol Moseley Braun: Very nice. It's beautiful, and it's not raining or snowing, more the point. The weather is really quite lovely, and I live right across from a park, so I'm here in Madison Park and enjoying the birds flitting around and the beautiful greenery and the scenery is just gorgeous, and so it really is lovely being here. LA: You obviously have had an extraordinary career in politics. We will get all into this later, but you are in Chicago where you were born and raised. Talk a bit about how you were aware of segregation when you were growing up in Chicago. In your book you talk about how your mother had to endure that while giving birth to you in a Chicago hospital. CMB: Well, my first introduction to it was the fact that we lived in a, it was actually a transitional community in the sense it was going from all white to all Black. And so we were in the middle of that transition, and that on top of the fact that when I was born, the nuns at the hospital where mother was, had designated me as being white. And of course I'm obviously not white, and so I went with my birth certificate saying I was white until I was in the state legislature when I was finally able to get it changed. I tried to get it changed just going to the passport offices, and of course they looked at me like I had lost my mind and, yeah, that's part of my background too.

Holland America Has 3 New 14-day Voyages to the Arctic—With Stops at Quaint Fishing Villages, Waterfalls, and High Odds for Northern Lights

If you've always dreamed of seeing the northern lights in the Arctic from a cruise ship, get ready for three new options to make that a reality. Holland America is launching three new arctic journeys that span 14 days and allow cruisers to spot the northern lights, with ship-wide aurora alerts that let everyone know when the lights are visible. The cruises leave from Rotterdam, Netherlands, with one offering the option to depart a day earlier from Dover, England. The initial cruise departs from Rotterdam, and cruisers can take time before departure to explore the historical city with its idiosyncratic modern architecture and impressive art museums. After two days at sea, the cruise ship will stop in Ålesund, a quaint fishing village in western Norway. Known for its colorful, ornate buildings and stunning fjords, this stop will have opportunities for both cultural exploration and hiking. Tours organized by the cruise ship are available. The ship continues on to Trondheim, Norway, with its easy-to-explore city center and sites that include Nidaros Cathedral and the Trondelag Open-Air Folk Museum. After this stop, the ship will cross over into the Arctic Circle, where the many hours of winter darkness are most conducive to spotting the northern lights. The next stop is Tromso, Norway, the 'Gateway to the Arctic,' followed by two days at Alta on the Alta Fjord in the north of Norway. This is one of the best places to spot the aurora, and there will be shuttles and taxis to take visitors into town to experience the culture of this arctic village. As the trip comes into the home stretch, travelers will go to Leknes on the Norwegian Lofoten archipelago, which serves as a gateway to a series of sheltered fishing hamlets with traditional houses. Next are the waterfalls and natural wonders of Åndalsnes, followed by a stop in Bergen, Norway's second largest city. Then, the cruise detours to Lerwick on the Shetland Islands in the United Kingdom to explore its Norse heritage, before spending a day at sea en route back to Rotterdam. Later cruises also stop at Kristiansund, a charming town on the Norwegian coast. The three itineraries depart in autumn 2027. Fares start at €2,599 (about $3,000) for the voyage from Oct. 3 to Oct. 17, 2027. The second trip, which spans Oct. 16 to Oct. 30, 2027, starts at €2,499 ($2,884), while the option with an earlier departure day in Dover starts at €2,719 ($3,138). The final cruise from Nov. 6 to Nov. 20, 2027, starts at €2,349 ($2,711). All cruises can be booked at
