Chinese customs seize over 40,000 fake Labubu toys

BEIJING - Chinese customs authorities have recently intercepted over 40,000 counterfeit Labubu, a top seller in Pop Mart products, which has seen growing global demand.
The Gongbei Customs in Guangdong province uncovered 20,599 suspected counterfeit products on June 12, including blind-box toys and plush figures, during three separate inspections of outbound transshipment trucks at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Customs checkpoint, according to the General Administration of Customs on J une 18 .
Many of the items closely resembled characters from Pop Mart's popular Labubu series, but most lacked proper trademark labels.
Following confirmation from the intellectual property rights holder, the seized goods were deemed to have unauthorised use of the company's trademark and copyrighted character designs, violating its legal protections.
The holder has formally applied for customs protection, and the cases are currently under further legal process, it said.
This is not the only case, considering the growing demand of this 'cute-ugly' toy across the world.
In June, some domestic customs reported multiple cases of intercepting the counterfeit Labubu toys.
In Zhejiang's Ningbo, the Beilun Customs officers confiscated 20,240 plush toys and plastic cups that were found to infringe on the Labubu Spring Elf series.
In another case, officers at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport seized 5,961 toys falsely declared as 'dinosaur toy' or 'plush toys', all bearing Pop Mart's trademark without authorisation.
Customs authorities have reminded exporters and their agents that, under China's Customs Law, all goods must be truthfully declared, including their intellectual property status.
Documentation proving legal use of trademarks or copyrighted designs must be submitted when required.
Infringing goods are subject to confiscation and fines. In severe cases, criminal charges may be pursued in accordance with the law, the authorities added. CHINA DAILY/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

On June 20, District Judge Lim Tse Haw said the man, 38, had breached a sacred trust between him and his pupil – for whom he was the Chinese language and form teacher . Sometime around 2019, the seven-year-old pupil approached the man to find out the name of a song he had played in class earlier. As she approached the man, who was sitting down near the front of the classroom, the man reached out and touched the pupil underneath her school skirt. They were alone at the front of the class at this time, as the other pupils were queuing up to go for recess. After three years, she decided to confide her experience to the school's vice- principal in April 2022 . A police report was then made. The judge said: 'Teachers are held in high regard by society. By virtue of the trust we ( place) in them to impart knowledge and good moral values in our students, parents therefore entrust their children in the good hands of our teachers for these reasons.' He pointed out that the pupil in this case was just seven years old. There is a gag order imposed to protect her identity. 'Although the touch was fleeting and did not intrude into her private parts, there was skin on skin contact with her inner thigh under her skirt – a sensitive part of the female body.' The judge added: 'The psychological harm, which included suicidal thoughts and potential problems with interpersonal relationships later in life, could be prolonged.' The Ministry of Education had previously told The Straits Times that the man had been dismissed in April 2022, and that he is no longer teaching in any school. For each count of molesting a child below 14 years old, an offender can be jailed for up to five years, fined, caned or receive any combination of such punishments. Odesa is Ukraine's largest Black Sea port, key for imports and exports, and has been under constant missile and drone attacks by Russia since the war began. "Despite the active work of air defence forces, there is damage to civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, a higher education institution, a gas pipeline and private cars," local governor Oleh Kiper said on Telegram messenger. Kiper released photos of burning houses and charred high-rise buildings. Local emergencies service said that during the attack there were at least 10 drone strikes on residential buildings, causing massive fires. Ukraine's air force said on Friday that Russia had launched 86 drones on Ukraine overnight. The military noted its air defence units shot down 34 drones while another 36 drones were lost - in reference to the Ukrainian military using electronic warfare to redirect them - or they were drone simulators that did not carry warheads. However, the military reported that drones hit 8 locations. Ukrainian state railways Ukrzaliznytsia reported that Odesa railway station was damaged during the attack, with power wires and rails damaged. Ingabire was freed in 2018 after serving six years of a 15-year jail sentence handed to her in 2012 following her conviction on charges related to conspiring to form an armed group and seeking to minimise the 1994 genocide. She is now accused of "playing a role in creating a criminal organisation and engaging in acts that incite public disorder," the Rwanda Investigations Bureau said in a statement late on Thursday. It did not say when she would be charged in court. Ingabire, who heads unregistered opposition party DALFA–Umurinzi, returned from exile in the Netherlands to contest a presidential election in 2010, but was barred from standing after being accused of genocide denial. Last year President Paul Kagame, in power for a quarter of a century, won re-election after securing 99.18% of the vote, according to the electoral body. Kagame is lauded for transforming Rwanda from the ruins of the 1994 genocide to a thriving economy but his reputation has also been tainted by longstanding accusations of rights abuses and supporting rebels in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
