'Drunk frat guys?' West Virginia coach rips Clemson for 'bogus' visitors' bullpen setup
West Virginia Mountaineers coach Steve Sabins isn't a fan of Clemson baseball's Doug Kingsmore Stadium -- or at least not the visitors' bullpen area of the stadium.
Sabins, whose team defeated the Tigers 9-6 at the Clemson Regional of the NCAA Tournament last Saturday before clinching the regional the following day against Kentucky, spoke about the environment at Doug Kingsmore on Friday ahead of West Virginia's best-of-three Super Regional showdown with the LSU Tigers at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.
What does Sabins think of the setup? Plenty, it seems.
Among the adjectives the first-year Mountaineers coach said of the designated area for opposing pitchers to warm up at Clemson's stadium, Sabins called it "bogus" and "kind of a minor league thing."
When asked by a reporter about any "issues" he had with the setup, Sabins sounded off:
"I like that you called them 'issues.' I agree with 'issues.' I think they need to fix that deal... I think it's 8,000 fans at Clemson. They're excited. It's an awesome atmosphere. It's a little bit more like a minor league atmosphere I think than [LSU]. When I've watched ballgames here, they don't pump as much music into the stadium. The crowd here is raucous and really into the game, but it's more of a traditional college baseball setting."
There weren't 8,000 fans on hand for Clemson vs. West Virginia. The State's Chapel Fowler noted that 6,475 people attended the game. And according to Clemson, the Doug Kingsmore Stadium attendance record is 6,891 when the Tigers defeated South Carolina, 5-3, on February 28.
Sabins called Clemson's bullpen setup for opposing teams "bogus":
"At Clemson, it's kind of that minor league thing where it's offensive-oriented. Every time that there's a ball or a walk or a hit, the music gets louder, and so it's a little bit like an artificial heart rate increase I think for pitchers and for defenders. The bullpen thing is bogus at Clemson."
Sabins went on to say that the visitors' bullpen set up at Clemson could allow "drunk frat guys" to interfere with opposing relievers.
"You can get so close and it's a net where as a pitcher is warming up, someone could actually grab a pitcher's arm," Sabins said. "And so I'm all for environment. It's just that as somebody was warming up, somebody could actually reach out and grab an arm."
Did any Clemson fan actually grab a West Virginia player's arm?
"I don't want to say that," Sabins said. "I don't know that for certain. It's close enough to be able to do that, so I think as a pitcher is warming up, psychologically, if you feel like you're in danger, you may adjust your mechanics or you may feel like it's too tight. So there probably needs to be a rule in place just to control that a little bit."
Here's a clip of Sabins' comments, courtesy of BlueGoldNews.com and posted by The State's Chapel Fowler.

Social media reacts to Clemson QB commit Tait Reynolds ranking Top 5 at Elite 11

Clemson defensive end Will Heldt named a transfer who 'could swing' the Tigers' CFP hopes Tait Reynolds made the most of his opportunity on the national stage this week, turning in a strong showing at the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles. The four-star Clemson quarterback commit competed against 20 of the nation's top signal-callers in a variety of skill drills and a 7-on-7 competition. By week's end, Reynolds was listed among the top performers at the prestigious event and earned high praise from Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Gorney, who ranked him No. 5 overall among all competitors. 'Reynolds was skilled, reliable and consistent,' Gorney wrote. 'The Clemson commit has a little elongated motion (probably from his baseball background) but he's a big, steady presence in the pocket who was exceptional on deep throws and the seam routes during the Pro Day.' Reynolds held his own in the 7-on-7 portion as well, completing 14 of 19 passes for two touchdowns. Event organizers also named him one of the top overall performers for the week. A rising senior at Queen Creek High School in Arizona, Reynolds is one of two quarterbacks committed to Clemson's 2026 class. Last season, he threw for 2,238 yards and 22 touchdowns with just five interceptions, while rushing for 1,437 yards and 19 more scores—averaging over 10 yards per carry. Reynolds is ranked inside the Top 250 nationally by both Rivals and On3 and considered one of the top 20 quarterbacks in his class. With his size, athleticism, and growing confidence, he continues to raise his national stock heading into his senior year. Here's how social media reacted to the showing. Clemson defensive end Will Heldt named a transfer who 'could swing' the Tigers' CFP hopes

Clemson offensive line ranked Top 10 heading into 2025 by two ESPN analysts CBS Sports recently identified transfer portal additions who could have the biggest impact on the 2025 College Football Playoff race, and one of Clemson's newest faces made the cut. Junior defensive end Will Heldt, a transfer from Purdue, was named the Tigers' most important portal pickup in the outlet's post-spring Top 25 feature. CBS Sports' Chris Hummer singled out Heldt as a player who 'could swing College Football Playoff hopes,' pointing to both his production and timing. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound edge rusher arrives at Clemson after two strong seasons in the Big Ten, and more importantly, he represents a rare step into the transfer portal by Dabo Swinney. 'Clemson finished last season ranked 59th in pressure rate, well below where you expect the Tigers to sit after finishing fourth, 22nd, 11th and 15th in that category across the last four seasons,' Hummer wrote. 'Heldt helps address that shortcoming. He posted 10 TFLs and five sacks for Purdue last season and should form one of the best edge rusher duos in the country with T.J. Parker. Plus, Heldt's presence itself is a bit of a swing factor in the playoff race. He's the first significant transfer take of Dabo Swinney's career.' Heldt played in all 24 games for Purdue from 2023 to 2024, compiling 68 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, and a fumble recovery. Last fall, he started all 12 games and was second on the team in both sacks and tackles for loss while ranking fourth in total tackles. Two of his best games came in back-to-back weeks against ranked opponents, where he tallied 2.5 sacks and returned a fumble 16 yards for a touchdown. Originally from Carmel, Indiana, Heldt was ranked No. 28 overall by ESPN among the top 100 transfer players this offseason. He was also recently featured in a CBS Sports breakdown of players 'most likely to make an immediate impact on the ACC' in 2025. With two years of eligibility remaining, Heldt not only fills a critical need for Clemson up front, but also marks a philosophical shift for Swinney — who had long resisted the transfer portal before adding Heldt. His arrival is expected to play a significant role in the Tigers' push back into the national spotlight.
