'Love Island' Contestant Issues Apology After Being Removed From Show For Saying The N-Word

Yahoo07-06-2025

Shortly after Peacock announced the "Love Island USA" cast in late May 2025, video clips of a new islander, Yulissa Escobar, saying the N-word on a previous podcast went viral online.
During the season's second episode, which aired on June 4, 2025, the "Love Island USA" narrator, Iain Stirling, announced that producers had removed Escobar from the villa, which many fans assumed was due to her past problematic statements.
Now, after some time to process the news that she'd no longer be in the running for the $100,000 grand prize on the most recent season of "Love Island," Escobar released an apology, which has drawn a mixed reaction from fans.
On Instagram, Escobar posted a graphic that read, "Owning my mistakes; speaking my truth."
In the caption, she wrote, "First, I want to apologize for using a word I had no right in using," referring to viral clips of her using the N-word while speaking about men during a previous podcast episode.
"In those clips, I used a word I never should've used, a racial slur," she wrote. "I used it ignorantly, not fully understanding the weight, history, or pain behind it."
She continued, "I wasn't trying to be offensive or harmful, but I recognize now that intention doesn't excuse impact. And the impact of that word is real. It's tied to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use."
Elsewhere, in her caption, Escobar explained that when she used the word, she was "speaking casually in conversation" and wasn't thinking "deeply or critically" about how her words could impact others.
"The truth is, I didn't know better then, but I do now. I've taken the time to reflect, to learn, and to grow from that moment," she added.
"I've changed a lot since then, not just in how I speak, but in how I show up, how I carry myself, and how I honor the experiences of others," Escobar continued. "Growth means recognizing when you were wrong, even if it's uncomfortable, and choosing to move forward with humility and accountability."
As she finished, the now-former reality star explained that she was choosing to speak for herself and did not want anyone commenting on her behalf.
"I'm choosing to speak for myself because I take full ownership of my actions. Do not listen to the fake statements. This is my official statement. This is me, speaking directly to you," she wrote.
On X, formerly Twitter, many "Love Island" viewers voiced their opinions about Escobar's statement, with many questioning its sincerity.
"Girl, you just got kicked out of the villa," one user wrote. "How much time have you really taken to reflect on this?"
"I understand why they chose to have her exit the villa, but she didn't learn anything by that," another user commented. "This apology may or may not have been genuine. Having her stay in the villa and understand the weight of the word would have either been a better lesson or shown viewers how she really feels."
"Not understanding the weight, history, or pain of the word? I don't buy it," a user posted.
"It doesn't take thinking 'deeply or critically' to know not to say the number one racial slur," another user shared. "This is so embarrassing."
However, under Escobar's Instagram post, the 27-year-old also received support from a handful of followers.
One user said, "Everybody makes mistakes," while another said, "Life is about growth and learning."
"We live, we learn, and we grow!" a third commented. "This doesn't define you. Sending you warm hugs."
Since Escobar's exit from the villa, "Love Island USA" producers have brought in two new cast members to turn up the heat, bringing the current lineup to 11.
For the women, the cast includes:
Chelley Bissainthe, 27, from Orlando, Florida
Olandria Carthen, 27, from Decatur, Alabama
Huda Mustafa, 24, from Raleigh, North Carolina
Belle-A Walker, 22, from Honolulu
Cierra Ortega, 25, from Arizona
For the men, the cast includes:
Austin Shepard, 26, from Northville, Michigan
Ace Greene, 22, from Los Angeles
Taylor Williams, 24, from Oklahoma City
Jeremiah Brown, 25, from Los Angeles
Nicolas Vansteenberghe, 24, from Jacksonville, Florida
Charlie Georgiou, 27, from the United Kingdom

Where to Eat, Drink and Chill in Kauai's Tastiest Beach Town

Before traveling to Hawaii for the first time, I spent hours browsing through Instagram and TikTok foodie posts. Gathering ideas for all the delicious meals I'd eat, I had high expectations for the food in Poipu Beach, located on the south shore of Kauai. As it turns out, this island's food scene impressed me even more than expected. From nicer, more sophisticated spots like Red Salt Restaurant to quick bar bites at Kalapaki Joe's, check out these best Kauai food and drink spots on your next visit. These must-visit restaurants in Kauai won't let you down. I love Indian food and will make a point to grab it during any trip. This tucked-away restaurant, "That Indian Place", has excellent food and will adjust to your spice preferences. I ordered the butter chicken (mild) and the chicken sagwala (mild), along with some garlic naan bread. The local atmosphere and outdoor dining patio really made this place stand out as one of my favorite spots to eat throughout the whole trip. Top menu items Mango LassiButter ChickenChicken Tikka MasalaChicken SagwalaPaneer Tikka Stop by Brennecke's Beach Broiler as you stroll along Poipu Beach for a lively, vibrant atmosphere. Locals and visitors alike know this top spot as one of the best places for food and drink on Kauai. While crowded, you can grab some phenomenal bites here as well as tropical-style frozen cocktails. I loved the desserts here too. If you plan on doing some appetizer or bar hopping along the main strip, definitely make this restaurant/bar a must-visit spot. Top menu items Seafood Pupu PlatterMango MadnessLava Lava FlowPineapple Rum Upside Down Cake If you want to try a Loco Moco, stop by Red Salt Restaurant, attached to the beautiful Ko'a Kea Resort. This spot served the best Loco Moco I had while in Hawaii. A Loco Moco is a Hawaiian favorite comfort food, made with white rice, gravy, a hamburger patty, and topped with a fried egg. It sounds interesting, but trust me once you try it, you'll want to order it time and time again. The ocean views from this restaurant also set the scene for a nice meal. Top menu items Lemon Pineapple PancakesLoco Moco Acai Bowl Unlike other islands with numerous national chains, Kauai offers a more locally inspired dining scene. This laid-back, down-to-earth island provides numerous options for fresh, local seafood, including mahimahi, ahi tuna, and ono. The island also has many traditional Hawaiian plates to try. I highly recommend trying at least one classic Hawaiian dish, such as the Loco Moco, during your visit. You'll also find spam musubi almost everywhere, another classic food in Kauai. Morgan Wallen sets negative headlines ablaze during 'I'm the Problem' tour opener

Morgan Wallen marked the opening night of his "I'm The Problem" Tour with a fiery performance at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, including what seemed to be his reaction to recent news headlines. According to multiple videos from fans in attendance at the June 20 concert, Wallen displayed a montage of negative headlines − including one that read "Morgan Wallen breaks COVID mask protocols" − during his performance of "I'm the Problem." After the song's performance, Wallen appeared to pour gasoline on the stage and then picked up a lighter, cueing a pyrotechnic show. "You say I'll never change, I'm just a go around town with some gasoline," Wallen sings during the opening lyrics of the song. "Just tryin' to bum a flame, gonna burn the whole place down." Wallen posted an Instagram video walking out before the concert with retired NFL legend Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans. USA TODAY reached out to reps for Wallen and NRG Stadium for comment. "Morgan Wallen burns the place down while bringing the receipts," wrote one X user. Another user on TikTok wrote, "Morgan Wallen claps back at all the negative headlines and sets the stage on 'fire.'" Wallen has spent his fair share of time in the headlines. Earlier this year, he caused quite a stir by making an early exit from "Saturday Night Live" during a March episode of the NBC sketch series. In an unusual moment, he hugged Oscar-winning host Mikey Madison during the signoff before walking off stage and then taking to his Instagram stories to post a photo of a plane and wrote, "Get me to God's country." Morgan Wallen teases new album 'I'm The Problem' and announces 2025 tour The walk-off moment sparked a wave of criticism for the "Just In Case" hitmaker, who pleaded guilty last year to misdemeanor reckless endangerment after throwing a chair off the roof of a bar. In 2020, Wallen was uninvited from "SNL" after videos surfaced that showed him partying without a mask amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The next year, he shocked the music industry when he was captured on tape in a TMZ video using a derogatory racial slur commonly used to describe Black people. The "Kick Myself" singer will also perform Saturday, June 21. Wallen's tour is named after his fourth studio album, in its fourth week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 top albums chart. His previous album, "One Thing at a Time," spent 19 weeks at No. 1 — the most weeks any country album has ever logged at No. 1. "One Thing" followed "Dangerous," which spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on its way to becoming Billboard's most successful album of the century so far.
