Italy plans to scrap no single buyer rule in Serie A TV rights sale
MILAN :Italy plans to remove a ban on Italy's Serie A top flight soccer league selling its domestic broadcast rights to a single buyer, a draft government bill seen by Reuters showed, marking a major overhaul of media rules for live sports events.
Italy introduced the "no single buyer rule" to avoid creating a dominant player in the pay-TV sector in 2008, when it approved a law entrusting sport leagues to collectively sell the rights to screen live matches.
Broadcasting rights are the main revenue source for Serie A clubs but they lag behind those of other major European national leagues.
Under existing contracts expiring in the 2028-29 season, Serie A earns some 900 million euros ($1 billion) annually from sport streaming service DAZN and pay-TV firm Sky, with the former screening all of the games and Sky co-broadcasting some of them.
That sum is roughly half of the annual domestic broadcasting revenue of England's Premier League, which has a 'no single buyer rule' in place.
Germany's Bundesliga, which last year removed its 'no single buyer rule', pockets some 1.1 billion euros annually from domestic broadcasting licences, according to data compiled by UEFA.
The Italian government also plans to introduce changes in the way Serie A distributes the TV revenue among clubs, raising to "above 50 per cent" from the current 50 per cent the sum which must be equally split among all clubs, the draft bill showed.
Clubs which develop and field young Italian players will be also granted additional revenue.($1 = 0.8758 euros)

Parma name Arsenal assistant coach Cuesta as manager
Parma have named former Arsenal assistant coach Carlos Cuesta as manager, the Italian Serie A club said on Thursday, with the 29-year-old Spaniard taking up his first senior managerial role. Cuesta, who signed a two-year contract, replaces Cristian Chivu who left this month to join Inter Milan. Cuesta, now the youngest manager in Europe's top five leagues, has been Mikel Arteta's right-hand man at Arsenal for the past five years. Having decided at a young age that his future lay in coaching rather than playing, Cuesta was given his first chance at Atletico Madrid with their underage teams and after four years there, went travelling Europe to study coaching methods. It was during this period that Cuesta met Arteta, then part of Pep Guardiola's coaching staff at Manchester City, and after a two-year spell with Juventus' youth academy, Cuesta joined Arsenal in 2020. Cuesta has played a key role in Arsenal's rise to title challengers, known for his one-on-one talks with players as he specialised in individual player development, focusing on technical skills and tactical principles. While Cuesta, fluent in six languages including Italian, clearly made an impression on Arteta when they first met, the same can be said about his time at Juventus when Federico Cherubini, now Parma CEO, was involved at the club. Juventus extend Adidas partnership to 2037 in $468 million deal
ROME - Juventus have extended their technical partnership with German sportswear giant Adidas until June 2037, in a deal worth 408 million euros ($468 million) over a decade, the Serie A club said in a statement. The current agreement between the two parties, which runs until June 2027, will remain unchanged, the Italian club said. The new contract will then take effect from the 2027-2028 season and cover all Juventus teams until the end of the 2036-2037 season. "This renewal fills us with pride and testifies to the synergy between these two great companies," said Maurizio Scanavino, Juventus Chief Executive Officer. Juventus, famed for their black and white shirts, said the valuation for the new agreement does not include additional royalties for exceeding certain sales volumes or variable components linked to sporting results. "We're delighted to extend our partnership with the most decorated club in Italian football for a further 10 years," said Sam Handy, General Manager of Adidas Football. Juventus have won the Italian league title more than any other rival club. Juventus and Adidas joined forces from the 2015/2016 season. The German sportswear group has a long-term partnership in place with English Premier League club Manchester United which runs until 2035, and also works with other teams including Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Juventus said last month that U.S. carmaker Jeep will pay 69 million euros to become its main shirt sponsor until June 2028.
