Painting voted third most loved UK rail art

A Surrey artist's depiction of a goods train leaving King's Cross station at night has been voted the public's third favourite UK railway-themed artwork.
The late David Shepherd CBE, who passed away in 2017, created Service by Night in 1955 as artwork for a British Railways poster.
Known for his love of steam engines, Mr Shepherd's painting ranked third in a global Railway 200 poll held to mark two centuries of the modern railway.
The artist's granddaughter Georgina Lamb said that "nothing made him happier than standing aboard a roaring steam engine".
She said: "His deep affection for these machines brought his paintings to life, turning them into vivid tributes to the craftsmanship he spent his life championing."
Mr Shepherd, who lived in Frensham and spent some years near East Grinstead in West Sussex, had a second love which cemented his legacy as an artist.
It was Mr Shepherd's wildlife art and care for endangered species that led him to create the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) in 1984.
Ms Lamb is also the CEO of the foundation which carries on his legacy.
She said her grandfather had a "lifelong passion" for both subjects, which he painted "with equal love and skill".
The DSWF, based in Shalford, operates across Africa and Asia to end wildlife crime and protect endangered species in their natural habitat.

New Canon Precentor welcomed at Carlisle Cathedral

CARLISLE Cathedral officially welcomed its new Canon Precentor. After a service of welcome last week, The Revd Pete Gunstone and his wife Kirsten joined the Cathedral community. Carlisle Cathedral wrote: 'Pete joins us as our new Canon Precentor. He will take a lead role in liturgy and congregational life and a full role in worship and the governance of the Cathedral. 'Thank you to everyone who attended Sunday's (June 15) special service, and to the Bradford Cathedral Choir for performing with our choristers.' The Revd Pete Gunstone said: 'Kirsten and I are delighted to be moving to Carlisle after six very happy years serving in the Diocese of Leeds. 'I look forward to getting to know the people of Carlisle and Cumbria, to inhabiting the Augustinian rhythms of the Cathedral community, and to joining with you in the adventure of following Jesus Christ today.' A Canon Precentor is a senior clergy member in a cathedral, they oversee the planning, preparation, and execution of services.

Endangered spider monkey and panda arrive at zoo

Two new animals have arrived at Paignton Zoo as part of a conservation breeding programme. A female red panda, an endangered species, and a female brown spider monkey, a critically endangered species, have been transported from zoos in France to the Devon site. Brown spider monkeys were added to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List in 2020 because their populations in Columbia and Venezuela were declining due to the pet trade and habitat destruction. The IUCN said it believed there were fewer than 10,000 mature red pandas in the wild after their habitats in China had been destroyed. The panda will join a female called Ember while the spider monkey will join a troop consisting of females Luna and Lena and male Kikou. Zookeepers said the monkey would initially remain off-show to visitors while the primates were introduced. Mammal keeper at Paignton Zoo James Shora said: "The red pandas offer those quieter, more contemplative moments, while the spider monkeys bring incredible dynamic energy from the forest canopies of South America. "It's like having two completely different worlds side by side." The red panda came from Les Terres de Natae, Pont-Scorff and the brown spider monkey from Zoo Amiens Métropole. 'Redundant' space transformed into family home

A new family home has been built on a garden in Hove as part of a project that looks to transform unused sites into good quality housing. Built through the Hidden Home project, the two-bedroom house on Martin Road is the latest addition to Brighton & Hove City Council's housing stock. This house, which is the 30th delivered since this project began in 2019, is to be let at social rent to ensure it is affordable. Councillor Gill Williams, chair of the housing and new homes committee, says the demand for housing in Brighton and Hove requires "truly innovative solutions". She said: "The Hidden Homes project ensures that we make the best use of pockets of land and redundant spaces on our estates, which would otherwise serve no purpose and remain 'hidden', by transforming them into good quality, comfortable and sustainable new homes." The new home on Martin Road has been built on land which was previously part of the garden of a neighbouring council house. When the vacant home was due to be refurbished, the opportunity was taken to divide the original large garden to provide an additional home. The house is designed to be energy efficient, with an air source heat pump heating system and solar panels to help reduce energy bills. A bee brick and three swift bricks have also been installed to help enhance the local biodiversity. Other homes built through the Hidden Homes project include a three-bedroom family house in Bevendean, and eight additional homes on the Bristol Estate.
