Hey, Google: Prerecorded AI Presentations Are the Coward's Way Out

Yahoo13-05-2025

Just about every big tech event these days includes artificial intelligence updates, often with a slate of live demos -- and sometimes, these demos fail. But some companies are dodging these pitfalls by prerecording their keynote presentations. And I call these moves cowardice.
At last year's Made by Google event, Gemini failed twice during a live demonstration. Though moments like this are undoubtedly embarrassing for companies, they add a layer of authenticity you don't get with a prerecorded keynote event. But unfortunately, Google chose the prerecorded route for Tuesday's Android Show: I/O Edition. The format felt way too staged and polished for my liking, and it stripped away the feeling of reality that comes with live, warts-and-all demos.
During the Android Show: I/O Edition, we saw a demonstration of Gemini sharing makeup tips, helping someone find a time to grab lunch in their busy schedule, and giving a summary of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Because these were prerecorded interactions, Gemini handled the requests with aplomb -- no hiccups or issues in sight. But tests show that AI models routinely get things wrong.
According to the AI testing site LiveBench, Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview is generally correct about 79% of the time. That's not bad, but it's not great either. And despite that score, this model of Gemini is still one of the best AI models the site tested, losing out to only two other models: OpenAI's o3 High and o4 Medium models.
Sure, nothing is perfect, and devices and software have bugs. But if you give me a calculator and promise it works all the time, but in reality it's wrong 20% of the time, that feels like a major discrepancy.
Since Gemini outperformed most other AI models LiveBench tested, there's a good chance I'd still use Gemini, even if the live demo stalled. But because Google opted for a superpolished demonstration, I have a hard time knowing what to believe.
Look, I understand why a company would want its product to work properly at its own event. But showing AI tools making mistakes feels more honest than acting like the tool is perfect. These capabilities are flawed, and that's fine, but be honest with people about those flaws and show your new features in action. Don't sell me smoke and mirrors.

Lenovo Launches World's First Chromebook With Dolby Atmos Sound

Dolby, Lenovo and Google have today got together to announce that Dolby Atmos sound support is about to appear for the very first time on a Chromebook PC. Lenovo's new Chromebook Plus (14', 10) will be able to decode and play the ever-growing range of Dolby Atmos sources now available right across the worlds of gaming, films and music via both headphones and its own internal speaker system, adding that extra level of immersion in whatever you're watching or listening to that Dolby Atmos is renowned for. Dolby Atmos works, if you're not familiar with it, by creating a three-dimensional sound space around you, complete with effects to the side of you, behind you and even above your head that can simultaneously track the movement of multiple objects in a mix. All of which anyone who has heard Dolby Atmos in action will confirm makes it easier to become much more immersed in the world of whatever game you're playing, movie you're watching, or music track you're listening to. The new Lenovo Chromebook Plus (14", 10) is the first Chromebook to support Dolby Atmos sound. Photo: Lenovo Clever psycho-acoustic processing and sound steering can create Dolby Atmos's sense of a truly three-dimensional sound stage even without the need for actual physical overhead and surround sound speakers, and it's in this 'virtual' approach to Dolby Atmos where the Lenovo Chromebook Plus (14', 10) makes its groundbreaking mark. The new Lenovo Chromebook Plus will deliver its ground-breaking new Dolby Atmos support right alongside all the customary combination of power and usability for which Chromebooks have become renowned. This is very much an additional feature rather than something that's required Lenovo to make sacrifices elsewhere to support. 'Chromebooks are powerful devices celebrated for their simplicity, affordability, and ability to inspire creativity,' says Mahesh Balakrishnan, Vice President and General Manager of Consumer Entertainment, Dolby Laboratories. 'With Dolby Atmos now available on the Lenovo Chromebook Plus, we are bringing cutting-edge, immersive audio to an even broader and more diverse audience.' Speaking for Lenovo Speaking for Lenovo about its new Dolby and Google collaboration, meanwhile, Benny Zhang, Executive Director and General Manager of Chromebooks in Lenovo's Intelligent Devices Group, had this to say: 'The Lenovo Chromebook Plus (14', 10), the first Chromebook with Dolby Atmos, is an important milestone in our long-standing collaboration with Dolby. We are committed to bringing innovative firsts to consumers everywhere and, through working with Dolby, our Chromebook users will now enjoy best-in-class premium audio.' To underline just how significant a development Dolby Atmos's Chromebook debut is for all the involved parties, VP of ChromeOS Product at Google, John Maletis, was also keen to comment on the new Lenovo Chromebook Plus launch: 'As we continue to innovate within the Chromebook lineup, our priority remains delivering exceptional performance and experiences that truly matter to you. Dolby has been an invaluable partner in this journey, enabling us to offer best-in-class audio experiences through Dolby Atmos, cherished by leading creators and loved by entertainment fans around the globe.' — Related reading Sony Launches New Bravia Home Theater Audio Products—Including Two New Soundbars JBL Unveils New Soundbar Rang—Including 16-Channel, 2,470W Flagship With Groundbreaking AI Sound Boost Technology Apple Dolby Atmos Comes To Cars For The First Time, Courtesy Of Mercedes

Lenovo promises 17 hours of battery life on its new Chromebook Plus 14

For years now, most Chromebooks have run some variety of Intel or AMD processor. The occasional device used a MediaTek chip, but they were often underpowered and cheap devices that were hard to recommend. ARM-based processors have worked tremendously well for Apple on the Mac, and they're being used in more and more Windows PCs as well. Now, Lenovo (makers of my favorite Chromebook ) and Google are giving ARM a real shot with the $649 Chromebook Plus 14. The companies say the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra 910 chip and its AI NPU can handle up to 50 TOPS — but more intriguing to me, Lenovo is also promising up to 17 hours of battery life. I'll believe that claim when I see it; mediocre at best battery life has plagued nearly every Chromebook I've used in recent years. But switching to ARM could improve on what Intel-powered Chromebooks have delivered, both in terms of battery life and overall performance. Time for the nitty-gritty specs. Lenovo's Chromebook Plus 14 is, as you'd expect, a 14-inch laptop that looks quite similar to a silver MacBook Pro. It's certainly more stylish and sleek than Lenovo's more utilitarian (and awkwardly-named) IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook Plus. It weighs only 2.58 pounds (about a pound less than the Flex 5i) and is just over .62 inches thick. In addition to the Kompanio Ultra 910 chip, Lenovo is including either 12GB or 16GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. Lenovo isn't skimping on the screen, either. The 14-inch OLED panel can be outfitted with a touchscreen and has a 1,920 x 1,200 resolution. The resolution is relatively modest, but totally in line with what you'd expect for the price. There are a few other nice touches throughout. Lenovo's latest is the first Chromebook with Dolby Atmos sound via a quad-speaker system that includes two downward-firing woofers. Audio quality on laptops has increased significantly in recent years, so I'm looking forward to hearing what Lenovo can deliver. The 5-megapixel webcam has a much higher resolution than most other Chromebooks, and there's also a fingerprint reader for secure logins. All told, this Chromebook is on the more expensive side compared to many other options. But when you compare its specs and design with other Chromebooks in this price range, Lenovo's latest comes out looking pretty good. Of course, we'll need to make sure the MediaTek chip is powerful enough and also see what battery life is like, but Lenovo's track record is strong enough that I'm looking forward to seeing if we have a new king of the Chromebooks. Given that Google is relentlessly focused on adding AI features everywhere you turn, it's no surprise that there are a handful of new AI tricks here. First are two that are currently exclusive to Lenovo's Chromebook Plus 14: Smart Grouping and AI image editing in the Chromebook's Gallery app. Google has been teasing Smart Grouping for a while now; it'll look at your open tabs and documents and ask if you want to organize them into a separate virtual desk. And the Gallery app now has some AI-powered editing features like removing backgrounds or turning your images into stickers. Beyond these are a bunch of AI features that are coming to all Chromebook Plus laptops, many of which will feel familiar if you've paid attention to what Google has released to other platforms in recent months. For example, you can now long-press the launcher and select an area of the screen to run a search. As usual, the default example is shopping — see a pair of shoes you want, highlight it and let Google find them for you. The integration does look nice, though, with a pop-over window showing you results so you don't have to leave the app you're using. Similarly, Text Capture analyzes text in an image and suggests things like calendar appointments based on what it reads. Or highlighting an image of a recipe can pull all of the items you need for it into a Google Docs list. The Quick Insert key, which was first introduced last year on Samsung's Galaxy Chromebook Plus , can now be used to generate and insert AI images into anywhere your text cursor is pointing — it's not just limited to Google apps. Finally, Google's 'help me read' tool has a new 'simplify' option that can take complex language (think scientific explanations) and put it in plain language to make it easier to understand. Anyone buying a Chromebook Plus this year will get a solid perk that Google first introduced last year: a full 12 months of the Google One AI Pro plan, which includes 2TB of Google Drive storage and access to more advanced Gemini features (you can find all the exact details here ). Given that this is a $20 per month plan, it's a solid additional value — at the very least for the storage, if you're not all that interested in Gemini. As for Lenovo's new hardware, I'm looking forward to trying it soon to see if the ARM architecture can deliver the massive battery life and performance improvements that the company is promising. But if you want to throw down your cash now, Lenovo's Chromebook Plus 14 is available at Best Buy and on Lenovo's site to order as of today.

Google's Next Gemini Update Spotted For Pixel 10 Pro

Gemini AI logo on a phone screen with a colorful background (Photo by Samuel Boivin/NurPhoto via ... More Getty Images) In the race to establish themself as the leading light in consumer-focused artificial intelligence, every edge is a slight advantage to Google. Tucked away in the latest Android builds is Gemini Space, which is one such small advantage. Discovering Gemini Space Mishaal Rahmen uncovered details on the new experience during a deep dive into recent builds of Android. It looks to build on the Android integration of Gemini AI into the At A Glance tools available to Pixel owners. Currently, At A Glance is available through the widely available Google app. The second is through the Pixel-exclusive At A Glance widget. The widget uses GeminiAI to surface contextual information across several services, including weather reports, travel updates, and event reminders. Rahmen suggests that Google will add more features that will support a rebrand to Gemini Space. These include pulling data from financial sources and a user's favorite sports teams. Gemini Space pops up in the code that links these services into the Google App and the At A Glance widget. The Impact Of Gemini Space One of the interesting decisions here may be Google's increased use of Gemini in the package and presumably in the marketing. Many see artificial intelligence as the new battleground not just for a few more sales, but as a disruptive element on the level of the web browser, the search engine, and the mobile operating system. Whoever has the upper hand, who can define AI and shape public opinion, will be best placed to capitalise on that. Google is part of that race (alongside companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity. The Gemini brand is highlighted as often as possible in the current marketing. Renaming At A Glance to Gemini Space unifies the experience on the Pixel handset, but also allows another mention of Gemini while illustrating what AI can achieve on a handset. Gemini's Ability To Win The Space With Apple falling behind in on-device artificial intelligence, at least in the way that Google is working hard to define the space, the upcoming launch of the Pixel 10 family, and the new Gemini labelled AI that will accompany it, should stretch Gogole's lead in the mobile race to be seen as the one true way to AI on mobile. Now read how Google quietly confirmed the Pixel 10 family...
