‘Disastrous consequences': Toxic death cap mushrooms found littered throughout NSW prompt grim health warning from authorities
Authorities have pleaded with members of the public not to forage or consume wild mushrooms after the notorious death cap variety was identified in numerous regions throughout New South Wales.
The highly poisonous fungi, Amanita phalloides, more commonly known as death cap mushrooms, have been detected by health officials in numerous densely populated areas of the state including Sydney, the Southern Highlands and Southern NSW.
NSW Health in a statement warned residents of the extreme dangers posed by the fungi, and that as little as one mushroom could prove fatal if ingested.
NSW Poisons Information Centre's Senior Specialist Genevieve Adamo said that symptoms from the fungi are initially difficult to detect, and that early intervention is crucial.
'Symptoms of mushroom poisoning can sometimes be delayed, but early treatment is vital to health outcomes," Ms Adamo said.
'These include vomiting and diarrhoea, and in severe cases, liver and kidney damage or death.'
Chief Scientist at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, Professor Brett Summerell, stressed that identifying the difference between an edible wild mushroom and the death cap were almost impossible.
'There is no easy or reliable way to identify if a wild mushroom is edible or poisonous, so we advise people against foraging for, and eating, wild mushrooms,' Professor Summerell said.
'Cooking poisonous mushrooms does not make them safe to eat.
"You should only eat mushrooms you buy from a reputable grocery store, supermarket or produce market,' Professor Summerell reiterated.
The alert follows a drastic rise in mushroom poisonings throughout the state, with 23 people hospitalised in 2024 due to toxic mushroom ingestion, including two children under five.
The NSW Poisons Information Centre revealed they had received 363 calls about wild mushroom consumption incidents in NSW and the ACT, a 26 per cent increase on 2023 statistics.
There have already been 190 calls to the centre reporting poisonous mushroom sightings as of May 31.
Ms Adamo said young people were particularly susceptible to the effects of the deadly mushroom and advised parents to closely supervise their children.
'As young children have a tendency to put things in their mouths, they can be at risk,' said Ms Adamo.
'Watch your children when they are playing outside, especially around large trees in parks or your garden at home where mushrooms may grow.
'With the identification of highly poisonous death cap mushrooms in NSW it is a warning that there can be disastrous consequences from eating wild mushrooms' the NSW Health statement read.
NSW Health and local council authorities have been conducted regular surveillance operations for death cap mushrooms after the variety was first identified in the state two years ago in Southern NSW.

"It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it's important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms up until 4 July 2025," Dr Mitchell Smith, from NSW Health, said in a statement. 'It's important for people to stay vigilant if they've been exposed, and if they develop symptoms, to please call ahead to their GP or emergency department to ensure they do not spend time in the waiting room with other patients." He also urged people to stay up to date with vaccines, especially for measles. In particular, those born after 1965 need to have two doses of a measles vaccine. "This is especially important before overseas travel, as measles outbreaks are occurring in several regions of the world at the moment," Dr Smith added. "While most people have already received their primary course of COVID vaccinations, we're urging people - especially those aged 65 and over - to get a booster to protect themselves," Dr McAnulty said. "Boosters are recommended for people 75 and older every six months, and those 65 and older at least every 12 months. COVID cases are rising again across NSW, just as flu season starts to bite. At total of 3475 people were confirmed to have COVID in the week ending June 14, which was a 10 per cent increase on the previous week, NSW Health revealed on Thursday. The department is urging residents to get their COVID booster shot to protect themselves as the virus continues to spread. Cases have been steadily rising across the state since May, with the largest increase among people aged 90 and older. But the number of confirmed cases likely represents only a fraction of the true total, as most people no longer test for the virus. The uptick is not limited to NSW. According to COVID Life, every state and territory has recorded an increase in June, with NSW, Victoria and Queensland seeing the sharpest rises. Health Protection NSW executive director Dr Jeremy McAnulty warned COVID is circulating at moderate levels and could escalate further, especially if people let their guard down. 'COVID is a serious illness and can cause hospitalisation and death, especially in people who are older, have other risk factors, or are immunocompromised,' McAnulty said. Deakin University professor and chair of epidemiology Catherine Bennett told last month that a new COVID-19 variant — NB.1.8.1 — is spreading rapidly across Australia. 'It is related to variants that we've seen, it looks like two of them have kind of combined but it has some new mutations as well,' Bennett said. 'If you're exposed, you're more likely to catch it.' She added that vaccines can still offer protection. McAnulty also urged people, particularly those aged 65 and older, to get their booster dose. 'While most people have already received their primary course of COVID vaccinations, we're urging people, especially those aged 65 and over, to get a booster to protect themselves,' he said. 'Boosters are recommended for people 75 years and older every six months, and those 65 and older at least every 12 months.' In addition to vaccination, he said there are simple actions that can help slow the spread. 'While vaccination is the best protection, if we all do the right things, like staying home if we're sick, wearing a mask if you do need to go out when unwell, and avoiding crowded spaces for gatherings, we can protect each other from these nasty viruses,' McAnulty said. All COVID-19 vaccinations remain free for everyone in Australia, including those without a Medicare card.
