This £16 SPF Is Japan's Best-Kept Secret – Now, It's Available At Boots

Graziadaily3 days ago

Before my recent trip to Japan, I did what any beauty obsessive would: research. I knew I was heading to the skincare capital of the world, where the pharmacies are treasure troves and SPF isn't just for summer - it's a lifestyle. Japanese beauty is big. Really big. Their approach to skincare is about clever innovation, satisfying texture, and, most importantly, long-term results. And while K-beauty might get more hype online, J-beauty is quietly iconic in its own right. It may be characterised by minimalist packaging but be rest assured that it's super-effective - just look at Tatcha's best skincare products for proof.
So, in between browsing matcha cafés and convenience stores, I made a pilgrimage to Don Quijote, Japan's chaotic but legendary discount megastore - think beauty aisle meets carnival. It was there, armed with screenshots and a suitcase, that I bought not one but six bottles of Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50, including the spray version. I also loaded up on viral rice masks, lip oils and of course, the Vitamin C serums made famous by TikTok.
But let's get back to the sunscreen. When is comes to SPF there is very few I like. There's the Ultra Violette Fave Fluid Skinscreen, £37, Elemis Pro-Collagen Skin Protection Fluid SPF50, £44, and Supergoop! Unseen Suncreen SPF30, £36.50, but that is about it. I was very keen to expand my limited stash and am thrilled to confirm that the the Bioré Aqua Rich is Japan's number one for a reason. Happily, it's finally available in the UK at Boots, so you don't even need to book a holiday to Tokyo in order to get your hands on it. As a seriously fussy beauty writer I can confirm: this stuff is elite. For just £16, you're getting the following: SPF 50+ broad spectrum protection
A weightless, watery-gel texture
Instant hydration without stickiness
A cast-free finish on all skin tones
Oil-free formula that won't clog pores
Hyaluronic acid (great for aiding moisture)
Vegan-friendly formula
Suitable for sensitive skin
If you've ever skipped sunscreen because it felt greasy, heavy or left an unsightly cast (guilty), this one will convert you. It absorbs instantly, leaving no white cast, no pilling and no weird film; expect fresh, hydrated skin that's ready for make-up. Truly, if I didn't know it was SPF, I wouldn't believe it. I also grabbed the spray version for easy top-ups over make-up when I'm running between meetings. It's really convenient for re-applying every two hours like you're supposed to (we all forget), though I'll be honest: it can get a tiny bit oily if you overdo it; little and often is the trick. Still, in the blazing Tokyo sun, I didn't burn once. It's impressive stuff.
The Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence is everything sunscreen should be - light, invisible, hydrating, and genuinely enjoyable to use. No wonder it's a cult favourite. If you're SPF averse or simply looking to upgrade your summer routine, this £16 bottle might just become your new holy grail. I get the hype, I really do. 1.
Biore UV Aqua Rich Water Essence Sunscreen SPF 50 50ml
What the brand says: 'This is Japan's number one sunscreen. It is iconic for its fresh textures and invisible clean protection. With SPF 50+ UVA & UVB, this feather-light sunscreen spreads easily and absorbs instantly to hydrate and helps protect from UV rays.'
What we know: This sunscreen is made with Hyaluronic Acid, known to help boost skin's natural moisture and absorb instantly with a sheer finish and no white cast.**
Renee Washington, digital fashion and beauty writer says,** 'Sunscreen doesn't need to feel like you're wearing an actual shield - this one feels weightless on my skin. It's one of the lightest SPF's I've used. It does what is needs to do (protect) while remaining almost undetectable. And that is J-beauty for you. ' Pros Lightweight
Hydrating
Cast free
Good under make-up
Affordable Cons Don't get it in your eyes it stings

Clever cooling pillowcase is a 'lifesaver for summer nights' and 'stays cold'

"I was very sceptical about a pillowcase that stays cold, but these actually do just that!" If heatwave nights leave you tossing and turning, a clever little bedding upgrade might be just the thing to save your sleep. The Homfine cooling pillowcases, available on Amazon for £16.98 for a pair, have been quietly building a fanbase — and for good reason. These pillowcases are made from Japanese Arc-Chill fabric, designed specifically to draw heat away from the skin. They also absorb body heat faster than standard cotton or even many synthetic cooling materials. The result is a fabric that stays noticeably cool to the touch, even after hours of use. It's a passive cooling effect, so there's no need for refrigeration or plugs — just clever fabric tech that works while you sleep. They're also impressively soft, with a silky finish that's gentle on skin and hair. The fabric's smooth surface makes them a great choice for sensitive sleepers, and the breathable weave helps prevent the buildup of heat and humidity around your head and neck. The design includes a discreet zip for a snug fit, and they're fully machine washable, so you don't need to pay them any special attention. Available in a pack of two and a variety of colours, they would normally cost you £20.99, but they're on an offer for under £17 in the run up to Amazon Prime Day on July 8th. Shoppers are calling the pillowcases a "lifesaver for summer nights" and are raving about how they 'stay chilly to the touch' no matter how hot the weather gets... One happy sleeper pens: "I was very sceptical about a pillowcase that stays cold but these actually do just that!, I am a very hot sleeper and these have helped so much, I have occasionally had to turn the pillow over but the other side is just as cold, they have a zip closing, the only thing I will say is they come up quite big in size you could get more than one pillow inside, obviously depending on the size of the pillows, they are lovely and soft to lay in and come in a choice of colours." Another shares a very comprehensive review, saying: "I wasn't too sure what to expect from these cooling pillowcases, but I absolutely love turning the pillow over to the cool side, so I was excited to try something that may keep the pillows always cool! First off, the material is much thinner than I had expected, it looks and feels a lot like workout clothing material that you would use for workout vests. Very flowy and slippery to the touch, and obviously very cool to the touch too. It feels like a durable material, though; it isn't thin in a negative way. "The pillowcase is well constructed and was more than big enough to fit on my average-sized pillows. The material does stay nice and cool through the night, and is even better if, like me, you sleep with a fan on in the room. I am very impressed with the pillowcases, and they will be a lifesaver during the hot summer nights." A third weighs in with: "It is surprisingly chilly to the touch. After a little while of staying in the same position, it will lose that cool feeling, but it cools back down very quickly if you shift a bit. Even when it's no longer cool, at the very least it stays neutral, rather than making me warmer. It's also very soft to the touch and generally pleasant to cuddle with. However, not all reviews were glowing, as you might expect. One shares how they prefer gel inserts to keep their pillows cool. "I have used a gel insert for years, but I'm trying to find an alternative because they always move around. This looked like a promising option, but unfortunately, they just aren't anywhere near as good," they say. It's best not to expect miracles from the Amazon pillowcases, but they are still worth trying, say over 100 shoppers. But, if you're looking around for other nighttime cooling methods, we can also point you in the direction of Oodie, who has launched a range of cooling blankets designed to wick away heat and moisture as you sleep. Plus, the blanket is currently on sale for £69, down from £99, saving shoppers £30.

'I went on holiday to Spanish island and couldn't wait to get home'

One holidaymaker visiting a Spanish island admitted she 'couldn't wait to get home' after heading there, as she shared a warning to other travellers in a video that's gone viral Most people look forward to their summer holiday all year after booking it. However, one holidaymaker visiting a Spanish island admitted she 'couldn't wait to get home' after heading there, as she shared a warning to other travel fans. Dannii, who is known on TikTok as @dannii_xo, took to her account to share her experience of visiting Playa Del Inglés in Gran Canaria with her 3,747 followers – and it wasn't a very glowing review. ‌ In her clip, Dannii can be seen filming herself while laying down as she looked glum. Overlay text read: "This is your sign to do your research before booking a holiday, we can't wait to get home." ‌ The video clearly resonated with people as it went viral – racking up 29,000 likes and hundreds of comments. Many people admitted they'd had a similar experience in the area, as one person said: "We were there last week. First day was pure panic because we were in Playa Sel Inglés and went down to the beach and were like [crying emoji]. They added: "Catch a busy to Maspalomas, there's lots of nice eating places. Bus to Puerto Rico and go to Amadores, the beach is so much nicer! And from Puerto Rico get the ferry to Mogán. It was honestly BEAUTIFUL!" Another person added: "We had the same feeling," while a third chimed in: "Yeah Playa is not the best at all, nothing there. Went down the Yumbo centre for a night out that was ok. Tenerife is my new go to!" Someone else also claimed there was "nothing there", but told Dannii to get the bus either way and "she'd be ok". Meanwhile, other people recommended she go to Puerto Rico or Meloneras and Maspalomas instead, however Dannii replied: "I don't think I'll be coming back because it's really put me off, I love main Spain but this experience has been awful!" ‌ Someone else reflected on how things had changed on the island, as they wrote: "That's a shame because Gran Canaria used to be the place to be. Particularly Yumbo but we haven't been in 4/5 years as people have been saying it's getting worse." Despite a lot of people agreeing with Dannii, one person defended the area, writing: "Playa Del Ingles was literally one of my favourite vacations. So pretty. Some days just chilling at the pool or beach and other days going to see the nature. The dunes, the mountains." While another simply said: "I love Gran Canaria." ‌ A third chimed in: "Playa Del Ingles? Mate. Get yourself to Sakura or Cafe Deutsche... El Chacho in Yumbo do amazing Mexican food. It isn't as boring or bland as you think." Dannii later gave an update as she shared more insight to her holiday experience, writing: "FYI: I wasn't talking about the whole island, just the town we're staying in. The hotel's awful, the locals have been incredibly rude for absolutely no reason, I can't travel too far out as I'm with family members that are elderly and it's too much for them. "I did catch a bus to Puerto Rico which was beautiful and I've only booked one trip because everything is so pricey, I feel like I'm being scammed, inflation has increased massively which I get but my family came two years ago and the prices have doubled." Dannii's post comes amid protests and demonstrations over mass tourism in the Canary Islands have taken place over the last year. Protestors took to the streets to demand limits on the impact of holidaymakers, claiming 'tourism is killing the Canary Islands'. Despite this, National Statistics Institute (NSI) figures showed the number of tourists visiting the Canary Islands has continued to grow, even with price hikes.
