Boy, 16, detained for killing former friend in Hackney
A teenager who stabbed his 15-year-old former friend with a pocket knife in east London, and confessed to the killing to an online girlfriend, has been sentenced at the Old Bailey.The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named due to his age, was given a custodial term of seven years for manslaughter, with a five-year extended licence period added for dangerousness.Pharrell Garcia, 15, suffered a single stab wound to the heart during the incident in Stellman Close, Hackney, just before 16:00 BST on 23 July 2024.The two boys had been friends but had fallen out and were planning a fight of some sort, the court heard.
During the trial, it was heard the defendant had messaged the girl saying "I think I just killed Pharrell. I stabbed him in the heart by accident, but was meant to stab his leg".Sentencing, Judge Philip Katz KC said after stabbing Pharrell, the defendant had chased him away from the scene with the knife in his hand, and then after seeing him collapse, had run away."The victim's grandmother and uncle then arrived at the scene. That must have been a soul destroying event," he said."That a 15-year-old died is a tragedy, that he was killed by another child at 15 is another tragedy."
'Very high risk'
The judge told the defendant: "You are a dangerous offender and the picture remains concerning. "You pose a very high risk of very serious harm to the public for further knife offending."The court heard the Pharrell's family would not be reading out victim impact statements because it was "too much" for them.Prosecutor Mark Fenhalls KC said of their experience: "The decimation of the family is unsurprising in these circumstances.""Having been at the scene when he died… it was too much for them. They can't cope any more."The defence barrister, Beth O'Reilly KC, said: "These young men knew each other and knew each other from primary school. This case has a real sense of hopelessness."At his trial the defendant had claimed he was acting in self-defence, but Judge Katz said: "This was never a case of self defence."

Sex predator can stay because home country can't treat his mental illness
A dangerous sexual predator has been allowed to stay in the UK after claiming his home country could not treat his mental illness. An immigration tribunal backed the Bangladeshi man's claims that he should be allowed to stay in the UK despite his convictions for a violent sexual assault on a stranger when he was 17. The Metropolitan Police also provided evidence that he had carried out further sexual offences in the decade since the assault even though he had not been convicted of them. He was also convicted for conspiring to supply 'significant' quantities of heroin as part of a county lines gang. 'High risk of harm to the public' The Home Office argued that he was a sexual predator who was likely to reoffend if he remained free and presented a 'high risk of harm to the public.' A lower tier immigration tribunal, however, accepted expert evidence that he had undergone rehabilitation and could be safely managed in the community. It also agreed that he would face persecution in breach of article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) if returned to Bangladesh, which did not have the facilities to treat his mental illness, and had a reputation for treating those suffering such ill health as outcasts. It ruled the man should be given asylum. However, its decision was overruled by an upper tribunal which concluded it was mistaken in its assessment that the Bangladeshi was not still a sexual predator who posed a threat to the public. It ordered that there should be a re-hearing of the case by a new lower tier tribunal. The case, disclosed in court papers, is the latest example uncovered by The Telegraph where illegal migrants or convicted foreign criminals have been able to remain in the UK or halt their deportations. Ministers are proposing to raise the threshold to make it harder for judges to grant the right to remain based on Article 8 of the ECHR, which protects the right to a family life, and Article 3, which which protects against torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, has pledged to change the law so that any foreign national convicted of a sex offence will be barred from refugee status in the UK. The tribunals were told that the Bangladeshi had attacked the woman after he offered to walk her to a bus stop, claiming that she was drunk and needed his help. As they walked through a park, he pulled her to the ground, ripped off her bra and started to assault her. He was 17 at the time and handed an 18 month detention and training order at a secure training unit for sexual assault. The judge said the Bangladeshi man had been 'insincere' in his expressions of remorse and failed to recognise his guilt. 'Highly vulnerable' However, the lower tribunal set store on an expert witness who backed his rehabilitation and that he was at low risk of any further sexual offending. This was despite evidence that the expert had been previously heavily criticised over a similar risk assessment. The upper tribunal concluded that he 'posed a high risk of reoffending and a high risk of harm to the public having regard to the particular nature of the offence for which he has been convicted.' It said the victim, who was highly vulnerable, had suffered serious psychological harm which had led to her attempting to commit suicide. The upper tribunal ruled: 'The decision of the First-tier Tribunal involved material errors of law. We set aside the decision and do not preserve any findings of fact. The matter is remitted to the First-tier Tribunal to be reheard before a judge other than the judges who decided the [Bangladeshi's] appeal proceedings.'

A serial rapist who served time alongside Ian Huntley in Monster Mansion has been found dead in jail. Ronald Cole had been in prison from the age of 29 following his last horrific crime - where he raped a 25-year-old woman as her baby son lay in bed beside her. His cruel offence came just 36 hours after he was paroled from prison for a carbon copy horror - when he raped a 24-year-old while her 13-month-old was in the cot beside them. Cole died on May 27 aged 74, 45 years after being sentenced to a minimum of 14 years. The investigation into his death is still in progress. Before being transferred to HMP Full Sutton, where he died, Cole spent time inside Britain's most notorious jail in Wakefield. Known as Monster Mansion, the feared prison has held the likes of The Angel of Death Harold Shipman, with nearly two thirds of its 750 lags incarcerated for the most serious sex offences. When Cole was an inmate, he shared the jail with double child killer Ian Huntley, 'Hannibal the Cannibal' Robert Maudsley and hardman Charles Bronson. Cole attacked his second victim shortly after being released from serving four years of a six year sentence for rape. But when he broke into the house he went into the wrong bedroom, and confronted another woman with her 20-month-old son. The savage rapist warned his victim that if she made a sound 'I will kill your baby'. The woman who was followed home by Cole had seen him peering through a window at her and was later able to pick him out of an identity parade. He received his previous sentence for attacking a 24-year-old woman while her husband was at work for a night shift. During the attack, in which he was armed with a knife, her 13-month-old child was in the cot next to the bed. Cops caught Cole because he left his palm print on the bedroom door after both attacks. He was arrested within hours of his second offence. During his sentencing remarks 45 years ago, Mr Justice Brown said: 'I regard you as a dangerous man and the women of this country must be protected from you, especially in their own homes.' Cole denied both attacks in court and claimed police had 'set him up' and planted the fingerprint evidence. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: 'Ronald Cole died at HMP Full Sutton on May 27 2025. As with all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.'
