Having played from 1999 to 2013 as a centre-back, the Moroccan took up his first coaching role in January last year when he was appointed AS Vita head coach.
Speculation had been rife as to who would take over the coaching role after José Riveiro did not renew his contract at the end of last season. Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena had been widely tipped for the position.
Orlando Pirates on Monday confirmed the shock appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou as the new head coach of the club.

Here is the full statement from Orlando Pirates on Ouaddou's appointment:
Orlando Pirates Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou as the new Head Coach.
Ouaddou takes over the reins ahead of the new season, replacing José Riveiro at the helm following his decision to step down to join Al Ahly, after a successful three-year tenure.
Born in Alnif, Morocco, the 46-year-old brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a tactician. A former Moroccan international, Ouaddou earned 68 caps for the Atlas Lions and enjoyed a distinguished playing career across several top European leagues. His deep understanding of the game, coupled with a strong leadership profile, positions him well to lead the Buccaneers into a new era.
Coach Ouaddou, who is expected to arrive in South Africa towards the end of the week, will be assisted by Mandla Ncikazi and Rayaan Jacobs, Helmi Gueldich and Tyron Damons.
Pre-season preparations will officially kick off on 27 June.
As part of preparations for the upcoming campaign, Orlando Pirates will embark on their third consecutive international pre-season tour to Marbella, Spain. The training camp – set to run from July 8 to July 20 – will see the team engage in high-level friendly matches against European opponents including Bolton Wanderers (England), Pafos FC (Cyprus), Las Palmas (Spain), and Granada (Spain).

From fallen giants to giant-killers: Botafogo's remarkable revival

Once Brazilian football royalty, Botafogo had languished for decades as a debt-ridden sleeping giant before they toppled Paris St Germain at the Club World Cup to cap a resurrection tale three years in the making. When American entrepreneur John Textor acquired the club in 2022, fresh from their promotion back to Brazil's first division, he took on a training ground so decrepit that then-coach Luis Castro dismissed it as 'good for parking cars'. That was alongside crushing liabilities exceeding one billion reais (R3.3bn). Botafogo were a storied but shattered institution. The club that once nurtured Brazilian greats — Garrincha, Zagallo, Jairzinho and Nilton Santos, architects of three World Cup triumphs — was drowning in debt, having endured the humiliation of relegation three times in just over a decade. On Thursday, they outplayed European champions PSG to win 1-0 in the Club World Cup's most eye-catching upset, propelling themselves to the top of the tournament's 'group of death' and on the verge of the knockout stage. PSG did not see Igor Jesus coming 🫣 #FIFACWC #CWC2025 #SSFootball — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) June 20, 2025 Their squad, assembled through shrewd bargain-hunting in football's forgotten corners, now faces Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid in Los Angeles on Monday, sitting comfortably, knowing even a two-goal defeat would still secure their passage to the round of 16. The victory over PSG vindicated Textor's vision, outlined in a Reuters interview three years prior, of 'beating the system' through astute scouting in under-explored talent pools. The architects of Thursday's victory exemplified this approach. Match-winner Igor Jesus arrived as a free agent after three anonymous years in the UAE and was transformed into a Brazil international. Argentinian defender Alexander Barboza, who neutralised PSG's vaunted attack, was plucked from Paraguay's Club Libertad for nothing. Captain Marlon Freitas came from second-division Atletico Goianiense, while experienced European campaigners Alex Telles and Allan were revitalised after spells in Middle Eastern leagues. Gregore, Jefferson Savarino, John and Cuiabano were all signed for under 2m (R41.5m) each. 'The goal is to be sustainably competitive every year,' Botafogo CEO Thairo Arruda told Reuters. 'With a top six payroll, we produce like a top three.' The transformation extends far beyond the pitch. Revenues have soared from 140 million reais in 2022 to projected earnings exceeding 1.1 billion by 2025, while liabilities have been slashed by 40%. Textor's Eagle Football empire also encompasses stakes in Ligue 1's Olympique Lyonnais and Premier League Crystal Palace. Botafogo's Renaissance — crowned by last year's domestic and continental double — has breathed new life into a club motto once heavy with self-pity: 'There are things that only happen to Botafogo.' After outclassing Europe's elite, those words now carry an altogether sweeter resonance.

5 Players to watch in Proteas-Zimbabwe Test series in Bulawayo

Kwena Maphaka celebrates with his Proteas teammates after claiming his first Test wicket, Pakistan star Babar Azam, at Newlands last Sunday. Photo: AFP The World Test Champions have not had much time to put their feet back up home after their heroics in England. Shukri Conrad has, though, refreshed the squad with a group of youthful stars looking to push for a place in the starting XI. Independent Media's Zaahier Adams picks five players that will hope to impress in Bulawayo. Kwena Maphaka The teenage fast bowler enjoyed a Test debut earlier this season in the New Year Test against Pakistan at Newlands, and was considered unlucky not to be selected in the 15-man travelling squad for Lord's with Conrad opting for Lungi Ngidi's experience instead. But with regular new-ball bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen rested, and Ngidi unlikely to feature in the first Test, it is an ideal opportunity for the 19-year-old to show that he should indeed be part of the Proteas' future Test plans. Matthew Breetzke Conrad gambled on allrounder Wiaan Mulder at No 3 in the WTC Final, and while Mulder showed great temperament in the second innings at Lord's to build a partnership with centurion Aiden Markram, it is unlikely that 'Wessie' is the long-term solution at first-drop. In the absence of Markram, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs, Breetzke has the ideal opportunity to stake a claim for a spot in the top-order. He will be keen to show he is a better player than the duck he scored on Test debut in Bangladesh.
