The Bharatiya Janata Party utilised the occasion of the International Yoga Day on Saturday to take forward its social engineering initiative, roping in its scheduled caste and Other Backward Classes (OBC) leaders at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Sthal in Gomti Nagar. Neeraj, Dharampal and Brijlal (HT Photo) Most of the 5000 participants belonged to the SC and OBC communities at the venue where all BJP leaders wore T-shirts with Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar's photo. People from Lucknow slums and nearby areas also participated in hour-long yoga sessions under the guidance of yoga instructor Malvika Bajpai. A large number of people, including youth, social organisations, women and differently abled children also took part in the event. BJP's state general secretary (organisation) Dharampal Singh was the chief guest while party leader Neeraj Singh coordinated the programme. Dharampal Singh is also spearheading the party's OBC outreach programme across the state. Addressing a gathering after the session, Dharampal Singh stated that today, yoga has become a moral and ideological tool in the direction of equality and social justice that Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar had envisioned. Due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi the International Yoga Day is being organized in more than 171 countries today, he added. 'Yoga is not only a physical exercise, but also a medium of social balance and mental harmony. Yoga also strengthens the unity of the country and the feeling of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,' Dharampal Singh added. Neeraj Singh stated that Dr Ambedkar struggled throughout his life to eliminate social inequality and to provide social justice to Dalits, the deprived and backward classes. Today in Politics: Home Minister Amit Shah in Chhattisgarh to review anti-Naxal operations
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit a security camp and chair a meeting to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh during his two-day trip to the state starting from Sunday, said Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma of the BJP-led state government. Shah will also lay foundation stones for a National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and a state forensic lab in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar on Sunday. The state government has allotted 40 acres of land for NFSU, which will be built by the Centre at a cost of around Rs 400 crore. Later in the evening, he will chair a high-level security review meeting with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, where senior state and top security officials will be in attendance. The meeting will focus on the current internal security scenario in the state, with a special emphasis on anti-Naxal operations. The CM described the upcoming visit of Shah as a 'symbol of renewed energy and confidence for Chhattisgarh', underscoring the importance of coordinated efforts between the Centre and the state to combat extremism and promote inclusive growth. Notably, anti-Naxalite operations have been intensified in Chhattisgarh since the BJP was elected to power in the 2023 Assembly polls and more than 400 Maoist cadres, including senior functionaries, gunned down by security forces in separate encounters since January 2024. Maharashtra's Baramati, the bastion of the Pawar political family, is abuzz about the elections to the Malegaon Cooperative Sugar Mill on Sunday, as reported by Partha Sarathi Biswas. While Ajit has fielded his panel for the 21 posts of the Malegaon Cooperative Sugar Mill, he is himself running for the chairman position. Adding further spice to the contest, after Ajit's entry, Sharad Pawar announced he was putting up own panel too, with the uncle and nephew rivalry now playing out in the mill, located on the family turf of Baramati and long a Pawar fiefdom. Before the NCP split in 2023, Ajit 'managed' the running and politics of almost all cooperative bodies in the region, including the Malegaon mill. In 2019, its outgoing board pledged their support to Ajit in both the general and state Assembly elections; now their loyalties are seen as divided between him and Pawar Senior. The Malegaon mill's functional area is about 37 villages, and the electorate for the June 22 polls are the 20,000 farmer members of the mill, who are also shareholders in the cooperative. Pawar Senior and Ajit are among the members. The mill's VIP status is reinforced by its reputation of compensating its member farmers well. Besides these two panels, the 'Sahakar Bachao Shetkari Panel' led by known Pawar baiter Chandrarao Taware, is in the race, along with a panel of Independents. The Tawares, who have for long been the only ones standing between the Pawars and their total dominance of Baramati, joined the BJP in 2019. Elections will be held on Sunday for more than 3,894 gram panchayats across Gujarat to elect sarpanchs and panchayat members in the first such exercise after the state government announced 27% OBC reservation in local body polls in 2023. Earlier, OBC reservation in local bodies was capped at 10%. Of 8,326 gram panchayats for which elections were declared on May 25, general and mid-term polls will be held for 3,541 gram panchayats. More than a thousand gram panchayats have been declared uncontested or vacant with no candidate filing their nomination, the State Election Commission (SEC) said. The SEC said gram panchayat elections in six talukas under Kadi and Visavadar Assembly seats have been cancelled due to by-elections held there on Thursday. Elections to the lowest level of local government administration are usually not contested on a party basis. Candidates do not fight on party tickets, though they may be affiliated with political parties. – With PTI inputs

Lakhs likely to attend BJP's Lord Murugan devotees conference in Madurai tomorrow
Madurai, June 21 (UNI) With the key assembly polls in the Tamil Nadu political horizon, the BJP, which is leading the NDA helmed by the main Opposition AIADMK, will hold a Lord Murugan devotees conference in the temple town of Madurai on Sunday, which has become now become the political hot spot for various political parties The much-anticipated Murugan Devotees' Conference, which faced some hurdles and protests and the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court giving its nod, is all set to take place at Amma Thidal, near Vandiyur Toll Plaza in Madurai, from where several political party leaders have launched their foray, with the ruling DMK recently holding its key General Council meeting after a gap of 48 years. Though Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is scheduled to inaugurate it has cancelled it, it would now be inaugurated by AP Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. Though the BJP has been maintaining that it was an event to spread the message of Lord Muruga and has installed replica of his six abodes with idols inside--that was visited by thousands of Muruga devotees over the last few days--party sources told UNI tonight that it was purely a devotional gathering and there was no politics in it. The conference will bring the curtains down on the about week long event. TN BJP chief and Legislature Party Leader Nainar Nagendran repeatedly stressed it that it was an occasion to highlight the message of Lord Muruga. The BJP had earlier organised Vel Yatra and also undertook padayatra to six his abodes, especially in the context of therow that emerged over Tiruparankundram hills--one of the abodes--to invoke his blessings, in what was seen as a bid to consolidate the Hindu votes in the state and defeat the ruling DMK. Organized by Hindu Munnani and supported by the BJP Tamil Nadu unit, the conference is expected to draw more than five lakh devotees from across Tamil Nadu, other parts of India, and countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore. Mr Nainar Nagendran, addressing the media ahead of the event, urged devotees from all walks of life and political affiliations to participate. 'Lord Murugan belongs to all. This is not a political event. It is a spiritual conference meant to strengthen our religious and cultural heritage,' he reiterated. He also emphasised that people should not bring political flags or banners, and that the focus will be entirely on faith, devotion, and Tamil culture. The highlight of the event is the devotional exhibits replicating the six Arupadai Veedu temples of Lord Murugan. Inaugurated a week ago, it drew thousands of people to have a darshan of the six avatars of the Lord giving an opportunity to those who could not visit these abodes. Continuous chanting of Kandha Sashti Kavacham (Lord Muruga devotional song) by about five lakh devotees and special poojas are planned on the occasion. Artists and orators from across the state will participate in cultural programs that would reflect the legacy of Murugan worship in Tamil tradition. The police have made elaborate security and announced traffic diversions in Madurai anticipating a huge footfall. According to BJP sources, this conference is part of a larger cultural revival initiative aimed at protecting and promoting Tamil Hindu traditions, especially the widespread devotion to Lord Murugan, who is considered the guardian deity of the Tamil people. The organizers and BJP leaders have also clarified that religious unity and devotion are the central themes of this event, not electoral gains or political narratives. The conference will conclude with a mass prayer for peace, prosperity, and unity across Tamil Nadu and the nation. The BJP said "with divine blessings, a grand Muruga Bhakth Sammelan (conference) will be held on the auspicious day during the sacred Sri Visuvavasu (Tamil calendar) year. "This spiritual gathering will take place in Madurai, the land that has nurtured and celebrated the richness of culture and devotion for centuries", the BJP said. "Let us come together in vast numbers--like waves of a divine ocean--to seek the boundless grace of Lord Muruga and immerse ourselves in devotion", it said. UNI GV 2245
