3,634 differently-abled persons to be nominated to local bodies soon: CM MK Stalin

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday announced that a total of 3,634 persons with disabilities will be nominated to local bodies immediately, for which the application process will commence at the district level on July 1.
Addressing the felicitation event organised by different organisations of PwDs at the renovated Valluvar Kottam to thank the CM for the representation provided to disabled people in local bodies, he said this will include 650 persons to urban local bodies and 2,984 persons to rural local bodies.
It was the first event to be organised at the Valluvar Kottam, after it was renovated at a cost of Rs 80 crore, which included a conference hall with a seating capacity of around 1,400 persons.
During the budget session of the Assembly in April, suitable legislative amendments were passed to enable the representation of 13,357 PwDs to all levels of local bodies through local bodies.
Before coming on stage, Stalin visited the renovated campus, including the landmark chariot structure that was beautified with lights.
Speaking to a packed crowd of PwDs, the CM said, 'A committee has been formed with district collector as head. A PwD will also be a member of the committee. Those who are nominated can take part in the local body meetings. Similar to the elected representative, nominated PwD will also be given honorarium.'
Regarding the renovation of Valluvar Kottam, Stalin said, 'Kalaignar laid foundation stone for this 'cultural treasure' in 1974. AIADMK generally abandon the projects of DMK. They would not maintain the buildings, memorials built by us. Similarly this Valluvar Kottam, which was left without maintenance, has been renovated with renewed splendour.'
He also appealed to the associations for PwDs to work jointly with the government and said all should grow as an inclusive society.

Telangana Dy CM Bhatti Vikramarka announces 2 per cent DA hike for power employees

HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Saturday announced a nearly 2% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for Power department employees. He said the state government, giving priority to employee welfare, has decided to enhance the DA by 1.944% for power employees and pensioners. The revised DA will benefit 71,417 employees and pensioners across the state. The DA has been raised from 14.074% to 16.018%, with retrospective effect from January this year. The revision will impose an additional monthly burden of Rs 11.193 crore on power utilities. Addressing employees of the power department at Praja Bhavan, the deputy chief minister said the revised DA would also apply to artisans, along with power employees and pensioners. 'Telangana should emerge as a guiding force in the power sector for the entire country. The state government is moving ahead with a well-structured strategy to achieve this. Electricity has become as essential to industrial production in today's competitive world as air is to life,' he said. Peak power demand Referring to demand trends, Vikramarka pointed out that in March 2023, when the BRS was in power, the peak power demand stood at 15,000 MW. 'After the Congress assumed office in December 2023, the demand rose to 17,162 MW by March 2025, an increase of over 2,000 MW. Despite this rise, the government and power employees had ensured uninterrupted and quality power supply,' he said. Vikramarka said the state anticipates a further steep rise in demand. Citing a report by a central agency, he stated that Telangana's peak power demand is projected to reach 26,299 MW by 2029–30 and 33,773 MW by 2034–35. The deputy chief minister added that the government was planning ahead to boost power generation capacity to meet these future requirements. He said that following the formation of the Congress government, the Green Energy Policy-2025 had been introduced, targeting the production of 20,000 MW of green power by 2029-30. He urged the power sector workforce to be prepared to face future challenges and reiterated that the government and employees together formed an ideal working partnership.

The Special Judicial Magistrate of First Class for Railway Cases in Kazipet, Ch Leela Naga Susmitha, rejected the police request for remand and granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 20,000 and surety from two persons. The arrest followed a complaint lodged on April 21, 2025, at Subedari police station by Katta Umadevi, wife of Manoj Reddy, a resident of Excise Colony, Hanamkonda. In her complaint, Umadevi said that her husband, who runs a granite business in Vangapally of Kamalapur mandal, had been under mental stress for 20 days. The complainant claimed that Manoj Reddy revealed to her that Kaushik Reddy threatened and extorted Rs 25 lakh from him to allow the continuation of his granite business in Huzurabad. BRS cadre stage protest at Subedari police station Umadevi further stated that on April 18, 2025, Kaushik Reddy allegedly called her husband again, demanding Rs 50 lakh and threatening to harm their family if the demand was not met. Based on her complaint, Subedari police registered a case under Sections 308(2), 308(4), and 352 of the BNS. Earlier, Kaushik Reddy had approached the High Court seeking to quash the FIR. On June 16, the court dismissed his plea and directed him to cooperate with the investigation. The interim protection from arrest granted earlier was vacated. Following news of the MLA's arrest, a large number of BRS activists gathered at the Subedari police station. Former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao and former government chief whip Dasyam Vinay Kumar were among those who reached the station and staged a protest demanding access to the MLA. The police allowed them to meet him inside the station.
