How a plague of 'mutating' super rats are taking over Sydney and becoming resistant to poison: 'Impossible to kill'

Black rats in Australia's biggest cities have developed a genetic mutation that increases their resistance to one of the most widely used poisons.
New research led by Edith Cowan University PhD student and environmental toxicologist Alicia Gorbould found the mutation in over half the rats tested in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney between 2021 and 2024.
The mutation suggests the rats have developed a resistance to second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, also known as SGARs, but other animals continue to be inadvertently killed by these types of rat poison.
SGARs are deadly to secondary predators, such as tawny frogmouths, Australian boobooks and eastern barn owls, that feed on rodents.
Black rats are the most common introduced rat in Australia and experts warn their increase in resistance to poison could pose a serious risk to the country's wildlife.
Ms Gorbould also expressed fears of a public health crisis as Australians may be using larger quantities of poison in an attempt to rid rats from their home.
However, instead of working effectively, this would serve to introduce more poison into the food chain, and into waterways.
Animals that consume the poison, which prevents blood clotting, die from internal bleeding.
Research carried out by Ms Gorbould and her team found genetic mutation Tyr25Phe, which is associated with resistance to anticoagulant rodenticides, in 53.7 per cent of the rats they tested.
The tests were carried out on the tails of 191 rails caught in Australia's fourth most populated cities.
Alarmingly, the gene was found in over 80 per cent of black rats tested in Perth, over 45 per cent in Sydney, 39 per cent in Melbourne.
Tyr25Phe was found in none of the 10 rats tested in Brisbane.
'If you're using one of the baits that don't work … people will probably try to use more, and more, and more,' she told Daily Mail Australia.
'And so it's feeding back into that cycle of increasing the rates of resistance in the population, increasing those non-targeted poisonings, and then we're ending up essentially with a public health issue because we've got these rats that can't be controlled.'
Second-generation rodenticides are so potent they are banned in the United States, Canada and the European Union.
The poison makes it way up the food chain and kills other animals in a huge risk to Australia's biodiversity.
Scientists at Deakin University previously found rat poison was to blame for killing powerful owls.
In 2022, in a study looking at the prey of powerful owls, the team dissected 160 possums.
They found rat poison in 91 per cent of brushtail possums and 40 per cent of ringtail possums tested.
Ms Gorbould urged Australians to consider against using rat poisons and instead look to non-poison alternatives.
She suggested snap traps and electrocution traps while pointing out that 'prevention is better than cure'.
The scientist advised the best thing people can do is make sure they don't have places for rodents to live by removing waste from their yards.

The sun shone on Melbourne's gardens in May – and kept shining. Warm-weather plants that had begun to die back in expectation of winter got a second wind. Basil started sprouting leaves again and roses shot new buds. The state's second-warmest May on record also confounded cold-weather plants starting to make their way out of the ground. Was it time to bloom or sink back underground? Meanwhile, in the state's south-west, dry earth became even drier, and raised the risk of unseasonal fire. At the same time, in coastal parts of New South Wales and Queensland, it didn't just rain but it poured. So as the seasons become more erratic and the climate crisis results in observable changes to our gardens, how should green thumbs respond? How do we know what is going to grow well – and how can we plan for our future gardens when it feels like the old rules no longer apply? There isn't 'a clean, crisp answer' to this question, says Prof Angela Moles, a biologist who heads up the Big Ecology Lab at the University of New South Wales. The lab's mission is to find out how Australian plants are responding to the climate crisis and quantify the factors influencing those changes. 'Different parts of Australia are changing in different ways. Often the dry parts are getting drier and the wet parts are getting wetter, and different species are responding to things very differently,' Moles says. Primarily, they're responding by shifting their distribution. Often that happens in counterintuitive ways, with more than a third of plants moving 'backwards', such as towards the warmer areas where they might be thought to prefer cooler ones. 'We're seeing a lot of reassembly starting to happen, and the speeds at which species are shifting are quite frightening,' Moles says. Globally, plants are altering their range at a rate of about 800 metres per year, mirroring what we know about plant behaviour from the previous ice age. 'Everything's in this wild state of flux.' That poses particular challenges for horticulture and conservation. 'There are cases where species start flowering earlier, but their pollinators [such as insects and birds] aren't around yet, or their pollinators are coming out even earlier. Pollinators are changing more quickly than the flowers, and that's causing some mismatches,' Moles says. Some of them, too, are going extinct. All this underscores the need to alter gardening and landscaping choices to take into account changing plant behaviour in response to the climate, but it also makes planning for that unpredictable behaviour very difficult. Clare Hart, the director of horticulture at Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens, says her team has been working on precisely this problem since 2016, assessing species for climate risk and developing a succession strategy for the gardens' future. 'We're working towards [a projected climate of] 3C warmer, and also [we're] going to have less rainfall … So the plants that we need to grow are from warmer, drier climates,' Hart says. 'We focus on adaptation because mitigation just isn't happening fast enough. And anything we do in an adaptation space will also assist with any mitigation when it does happen – and it needs to happen.' In 2018, the gardens held an international climate change summit, out of which sprung the international Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens. One practical tool developed by that alliance to help with planning, especially for trees, was the climate assessment tool. Available to the public, the tool models the likely suitability of different tree species for a specified location against projected climate scenarios. A new feature of the gardens, the Australian Drylands is 'essentially a great experiment' to assess which native plants might grow well in a warmer, drier Melbourne. Horticulturalists looked north, from the top of NSW across to Western Australia, and collaborated with traditional owners, parks workers and other botanical gardens to understand which plants might suit the coming new normal further south. Hart names kangaroo grass, flame trees, spear lilies, gymea lilies and cycads as just some of the more well-known varieties already showing their versatility and resilience. Moles and Hart recommend walking around your neighbourhood and taking note of the plants that are flourishing, especially if they're native, and where in the garden they are placed. Planting out your nature strip can be a great way to help local ecosystems become more climate resilient, says Moles, as it helps mitigate urban heat pockets, provides habitat and assists in migration routes for plants, birds, animals and insects. 'Understand your soil conditions, understand water, where it comes from, and if you have the opportunity to put in a water tank – things like that really will help you to future proof,' says Hart. Recognise also that 'your microclimate can change quite dramatically, even from neighbour to neighbour,' Hart says. If your garden space is a balcony with a lot of afternoon sun, that may be better suited to growing plants more commonly found hundreds of kilometres further north than those thriving in next door's shady back yard. Consult local experts Hart recommends smaller, local nurseries and Indigenous plant nurseries as good sources of knowledge about plants that will do well in local conditions. Local councils will also often have local plant lists and resources for home gardeners who want to build local habitat. Connecting with community groups can be a useful way to learn about what's doing well in nearby bushland areas. Give plants extra protection when they're young Plants are most vulnerable during their early establishment phase, so try planting them in a context that allows you to give them a bit more care and attention while they're starting out, says Moles. 'Once they're established, they'll be a little bit more robust.' Explore your local area and find out to show what plants are growing around you (and which animals have been seen locally, too). The Bureau of Meteorology provides general forecasts for rainfall and temperature up to four months in advance, giving you a rough idea of what conditions are likely for the season ahead. School of Thumb is a horticulture industry-funded video series aimed at less-experienced gardeners, to help them think about their circumstances and the plants that might suit.

Doctors who are arrested while demonstrating at climate change protests should not be struck off, a union is being urged to say. A series of motions to be put before the British Medical Association (BMA) are calling for unwavering support to be given to NHS staff who take part in 'non-violent' eco action. If successful, the union would call for a ban on disciplinary proceedings being brought against activist doctors who are arrested for protest stunts that may include inflicting criminal damage on property and businesses. One motion submitted to the annual representative meeting in Liverpool, which begins on June 23, says the BMA should recognise ' climate change is a public health emergency ' so doctors 'have an ethical duty to advocate for direct action'. It adds that medics should 'condemn' any complaints or disciplinary actions brought 'against doctors who engage in non-violent climate activism'. 'Non-violent climate advocacy' It also calls for 'explicit protections within employment contracts… to ensure doctors do not face career detriment for engaging in non-violent climate advocacy'. Another motion asks BMA members to formally recognise 'that it is a mark of tyrannical regimes that they seek to destroy the careers of those who challenge them' and for the union to refuse to take part in any disciplinary action against medics convicted of 'forms of civil disobedience which do not involve violence to the person'. The moves follow a series of high-profile court cases that have seen doctors sanctioned for taking part in climate activism. In January, Dr Sarah Benn lost an appeal against the suspension of her medical license after she was jailed for breaching a court order by taking part in climate protests. She took part in three Just Stop Oil protests at an oil terminal in Warwickshire in 2022 before being suspended from practising for five months by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) in April 2024. Dr Benn, who had worked in Birmingham and has since retired, sought to challenge the tribunal's findings at the High Court. However, a judge rejected her case after concluding she 'intended to act in a way that did not meet the standards of behaviour to be expected of a doctor'. Also in January, Dr Patrick Hart was jailed for a year after being found guilty of causing criminal damage after damaging petrol pumps with a hammer and chisel at an M25 service station. In total, 16 fuel pumps at Thurrock Motorway Services, in Grays, Essex, were attacked by Hart on Aug 24, 2022. When the doctor is released from prison, he will face a tribunal after being referred for a disciplinary hearing by his medical regulator, the General Medical Council. A spokesman for the GMC said at the time that Dr Hart was not currently suspended. Before he was sentenced, Dr Hart told the court: 'Right now, the greatest health threat to all of us is the unfolding climate catastrophe. 'It is the greatest health threat we have ever faced. All healthcare workers have a responsibility to protect the health of their patients. 'If we do not stand up to the oil and gas executives who are wreaking havoc on our climate and the politicians who enable them, if we do not end the burning of fossil fuels, then we will have failed as a profession and the health systems that we have developed over centuries will collapse. 'I will continue to fight against the death sentence of fossil fuels for as long as I have strength in me. I have no greater duty as a doctor at this moment in history.'

Those looking to swim in two popular beaches on Lake Erie this weekend have been warned of high E. coli levels infecting the waters. Edgewater and Villa Angela Beach, located on the edge of Cleveland, Ohio, have been issued a water quality advisory due to high levels of waterborne bacteria, according to the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. Edgewater Beach had an E. coli reading of 90 MPN/100 mL, while the water of Villa Angela read a whopping 315 MPN/100 mL. E. coli is measured in a measurement called MPN (most probable number), which estimates the amount of E. coli cells in a liquid sample. The E. coli threshold for Edgewater is set at 80 MPN/100 mL, and Villa Beach is 135 MPN/100 mL. Since both beaches had an E. coli measurement above their threshold, experts have advised against swimming in the water. Both beaches are still open, but patrons are advised that swimming in the water could result in contact with the potentially deadly bacteria. The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District collects data on contaminated water using the Nowcast system. The system uses rainfall patterns and wind direction to predict the water quality of the lakes. This weekend's Nowcast system predicted poor water quality, urging children, the elderly, and those with health concerns to stay away from swimming. E. coli infections impact your gut and urinary tract, resulting in symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and a fever. Around 17 percent of those who contract E. coli die from the infection, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Although the percentage isn't high, vulnerable populations are at an enhanced risk. Those with diabetes, weakened immune systems, who are over the age of 65, or are young children are at the greatest risk of infection. If the infection spreads to the urinary tract system, it can cause pelvic pain, a burning sensation during urination, and cloudy, foul-smelling urine. E. coli is mostly spread through fecal-oral transmission when the bacteria are too small to see. Sepsis is the most common cause of death for those infected with E. coli. The condition occurs when the body's immune system can't fight off an infection and can lead to organ failure. The infection is contagious and can spread by touching contaminated objects, surfaces, or food. E. coli typically infects lakes and water sources after a rainstorm when animal feces are washed into the water. Aging sewage pipes can also leak contaminated water into lakes.
