
The Italian neighbourhood gem that's flying under the radar
'Bringing a dog.'
The little white box thoughtfully staring back at me on the online booking form confirmed this was my kind of establishment. While (sadly) a furry friend remains a twinkle in my eye (due to a fencing issue and a human companion less excited to acquire a canine one), I appreciate a dining venue that welcomes all. Throw in a little taste of Italy and my heart starts to sing.
Bodega, a neighbourhood trattoria on an unassuming street in Scarborough touts all the pizza and pasta classics. With menu items like burrata addiction, $27, and arancini truffle bomb, $22, ordering is a no-nonsense experience. Vegos and vegans are also well catered for, with a curious cauliflower steak, $29, appearing as a main.
Service is excellent — warm, attentive, friendly. Outdoor tables are full this early evening, as we sit inside by a window, surrounded by couples, a family and friend groups deep in conversation.
A mishmash of interiors that feature aqua-blue walls, disco balls, framed photos and a lone Azzurri jersey hanging from the ceiling suggest the team behind Bodega don't take themselves too seriously, though the quality of the food says otherwise.

The burrata, big and beautiful as it should be, resting beside a bed of deliciously fresh cherry tomatoes and basil, urges us to sample the pan fritto, $14. The 48-hour pizza dough, cut and fried with parmigiano is the perfect side with a dollop of creamy cheese.
Bodega offers a nice selection of Italian wines by the glass as well as some locals, a reasonably priced cocktail list, beers and spirits. A 2022 Italian fiano proves a fine choice for the mains to come.
Penne alla vodka, $35, sees faultlessly al dente tubes in a creamy tomato-vodka sauce topped with crispy prosciutto and just enough spice. The linguine ai gamberi, $36, has a fair serving of succulent prawns and packs a punch with heat, with pangrattato adding a nice texture. Both pasta dishes are full of flavour and satisfy on all fronts.
With barely a skerrick of room for dessert, we succumb to the panna cotta with housemade coulis, $15. The fruity topping is sweet without being cloying, with the velvety firm custard a pleasurable end to the meal.
Opened by three friends with a desire to provide great food in a warm atmosphere, Bodega is certainly hitting the mark. While popular among locals, this gem of a diner has been flying under the radar. We'll likely be back soon, with kids or pup in tow.
An easygoing neighbourhood restaurant serving authentic Italian dishes made with care. Great wines and excellent food. Deserving of repeat visits.

The actor posed on the red carpet for the first time in two years at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival in Cagliari, Italy, on Thursday and told Italian outlet, Lo Speciale Giornale, that their relationship to cinema is now 'on tentative grounds'. Miller — who had a slew of legal issues in 2022 — also spoke out about their blink-and-you-miss-it red carpet appearance at Cannes in May, during which they sprinted across the media line at the premiere of Lynne Ramsey's Die, My Love, reports The New York Post'sPage Six. 'I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world who is Lynne Ramsey — who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers,' Miller said of Ramsey, who previously directed Miller in 2011's We Need to Talk About Kevin. Miller claimed they're writing an unnamed film with Ramsey, and added, 'that will likely be the first thing I do' when returning to Hollywood. 'I've been writing a lot, because you can do that in solitude,' Miller remarked, 'which has been friendly to me'. Miller has given a peculiar new interview. In June 2022, a parent accused Miller of grooming their child from the age of 12. Another parent came forward the same month with an allegation that Miller 'menaced their family one evening in their downstairs neighbour's home and acted inappropriately toward' a 12-year-old minor. No charges were filed against Miller and they later released a statement saying, 'I have been unjustly and directly targeted by an individual who the facts have shown has a history of such manipulative and destructive action'. That same month they were accused of allegedly housing a mother and her three children in an unsafe environment at a Vermont farm — though by August, Miller told cops the family hadn't lived there in months. They pleaded guilty to misdemeanour unlawful trespass and was put on one-year probation. Miller issued an apology later that month and announced they were seeking treatment. 'Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,' they told Variety at the time. 'I want to apologise to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.' 'We've become very consumed in notions of perception, self-perception, how we're perceived in the world. I really believe in digging past that and being a friend to people. And the people who did that for me, they have my lifelong devotion,' they explained. 'And also I'm grateful for the revelations of who was not that,' they said. Winter festival with campfire, marshmallows and live music
An award-winning artistic director and performer is set to bring a fresh twist to a popular annual winter festival in Perth's south. James Berlyn is co-curating this year's Melville Midwinter event at Dyoondalup Point Walter Reserve on June 21 alongside the City of Melville's creative producer of arts and culture, Zoe Atkinson. Mr Berlyn has been a performer, director and art lecturer for 40 years and is best known for his time at the WA Theatre Company where he directed Rest. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Rest was an interactive experience staged amongst the tombstones at East Perth Cemetery in 2019. It was recognised with the Theatre Award and The West Australian Arts Editor Award. This weekend's free event, which celebrates the winter solstice and the Noongar season of Makuru, will feature a series of musical, dance, visual art and spoken word performances ahead of the event's climax, a mass plunge of willing participants off the jetty. Mr Berlyn said the Melville Midwinter event is committed to 'embracing time and culture' with the return of crowd-favourite activities including marshmallow roasting by the fire. 'Even though it's the middle of winter, people can come together and celebrate at a time when we often have our heads down and were just kind of getting through and surviving,' he said. 'We're proud to be able to curate some of the best local talent across a wide range of arts offerings and create a platform for everyone in the community to celebrate the season.'
