Shoddy Indian women lose 1-5 against Belgium in FIH Pro League

On Saturday, India took the lead through Deepika (6th minute) before Belgium turned things around after half time, pumping in five goals through Hélène Brasseur (37th, 55th), Lucie Breyne (41st), Ambre Ballenghien (54th) and Charlotte Englebert (58th). It was team's fifth consecutive defeat in a row at the the European leg of the tournament having lost two matches each to Australia and Argentina in London. Antwerp (Belgium), Jun 21 (PTI) The Indian women's hockey team's nightmarish run in the FIH Pro League extended with a 1-5 defeat against Belgium here Saturday. Belgium started on the offensive and dominated the early share of exchanges with repeated raids into the Indian circle but the visitors defended well. The hosts had the first scoring chance of the match in the form of a penalty corner but India goalkeeper Savita made a fine save. After the early onslaught, the Indians got their acts together and made a comeback in the form of a penalty corner, and Deepika made no mistake, scoring with a powerful low flick through the legs of Belgian goalkeeper Elena Sotgiu in the sixth minute. India controlled the ball in the midfield thereafter but could not create any more chances. Belgium pressed hard on the Indian defence in the second quarter and in the process secured two penalty corners in the 19th and 21st minutes but on both occasion the Indian defence stood tall. India too had their chances and in the 23rd minute skipper Salima Tete earned the second penalty corner for her team but failed to capitalise on the chance. India had just one real chance after the change of ends in the form of their fourth penalty corner but squandered the opportunity. Thereafter it was all Belgium as the play was mostly inside the Indian half with the hosts pressing hard for goals. India's strategy to sit back and defence backfired as Belgium earned three back-to-back penalty corners in the 37th minute, the last of which was converted by Hélène Brasseur with a backhand shot. It was raining penalty corners for Belgium as they earned their 11th set piece minutes later and Lucie Breyne dived to get her stick to guide he ball into the net after it was saved by Savita. A minute later, Belgium had another penalty corner but wasted the opportunity. The Indian defence looked clueless in the last two quarters against Belgium's onslaught, conceding penalty corners in heaps and from three such set pieces Ballenghien, Brasseur and Englebert scored to the cheers of the home crowd. The Indian women will again take on Belgium in return leg match on Sunday. PTI SSC SSC AT AT This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.

Image: PTI/AFP Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said he wasn't too worried about the team's future after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's sudden retirement from Test cricket last month, stating that Indian cricket has enough talent in the current generation to fill the void. Ganguly made the statement while heaping praise on opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill, who succeeded Rohit as Test leader, for their excellent knocks in the first Test against England that is currently underway at Headingley, Leeds. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ganguly heaps praise on Gill and Jaiswal after centuries at Headingley Jaiswal and Gill struck centuries on the opening day of the series opener in Leeds, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant also bringing up the milestone on the following day . India, as a result, ended Day 1 in a dominant position of 359/3. 'I am so happy to see his feet (movement) away from home, there's a massive improvement in that away from home. Shubman's feet were fantastic, didn't make a mistake,' Ganguly told PTI in an interview. 'I think England shouldn't have bowled on that wicket and they also didn't bowl well enough. His (Gill's) feet movement was fantastic, I hope it is a permanent thing with him because if he keeps batting like this in England and away conditions, he is going to score a lot of runs,' he added. The trio of Jaiswal, Gill and Pant eased concerns regarding the Indian batting lineup after Rohit and Kohli's retirement announcements – which came in the span of a week last month and took the entire cricketing world by surprise, especially in the latter's case. Ganguly, who had served as BCCI president from 2019 to 2022 and has also mentored Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, claimed he was never worried about the future of Team India after Rohit and Kohli's retirements. 'I was never worried about Indian cricket. There will be someone taking Indian cricket forward. I am not surprised with Yashasvi (Jaiswal) because I rate him as a fantastic batter, he is someone who should play all formats,' he added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Despite centuries from Jaiswal, Gill and Pant, India failed to cross 500 at Headingley – getting bowled out for 471 on Day 2 after a batting collapse in which they lost their last seven wickets for just 41 runs. Captain Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue collected four wickets each, for 66 and 86 runs respectively.

Sourav Ganguly On Shubman Gill Era: '...Was Never Worried About Indian Cricket'

Sourav Ganguly is confident that Indian cricket will be alright in the new era with Shubman Gill leading a team without Kohli, Sharma and Ashwin. The India-England series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy marks the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket. A Shubman Gill-led team embarks on a tour of England without the legendary Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Despite the expected challenges of this transition, Sourav Ganguly expressed confidence in India's smooth transition, attributing it to the country's robust domestic structure. 'I was never worried about Indian cricket. There will be someone taking Indian cricket forward. I am not surprised with Yashasvi (Jaiswal) because I rate him as a fantastic batter, he is someone who should play all formats," Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI. Jaiswal has been impressive since the start of his Test career. The left-hander continued his excellent form with a 101-run knock, setting India on course for a substantial first-innings total. He shared a 91-run partnership with fellow opener KL Rahul (42) for the first wicket. 'I am not surprised by Yashasvi's performance because I have seen him play in Australia, the West Indies, and India, hope he keeps on performing like this but Shubman Gill's improvement is commendable. 'Shubman and his batting away from home, I am telling you India has a lot of talent, there are 4-5 players waiting now who, when given a chance, will score runs," Ganguly said. Ganguly acknowledged that replacing someone like Kohli is challenging but praised Gill's quality, especially in the number four slot, which Kohli had made his own. 'Virat is a class player, finding his replacement will take time. But the rest, I wasn't, I was not surprised by what I saw with Shubman. There is too much quality in Indian cricket because of the system, the quality of domestic cricket, leagues, because of the kind of time and money associations put in developing a player," said Ganguly, who has served as the BCCI president in the past. The former India captain also appreciated the change in approach by wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant, who has managed to curb his natural aggressive instincts. 'Rishabh plays fast bowling well, I didn't like his batting in Australia, he was playing a lot of shots. Yesterday (Friday) he did restrictive batting, he has curtailed his game on his strengths, he is a great player in Tests, and will play all the three formats," Ganguly added.
