Negeri Sembilan sees 13 pct rise in Covid-19 cases during early June

SEREMBAN: Negeri Sembilan reported 110 new COVID-19 cases during Epidemiological Week 23 (June 1–7), marking a 13 per cent increase from the 97 cases recorded the previous week.
State Health director Dr Zuraida Mohamed said most cases were detected at private clinics across the state and involved outpatients.
'No COVID-19 clusters have been reported so far, and the situation remains under control. The Health Department (JKNNS) will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely,' she told Bernama today.
She also advised the public to practise self-preventive measures at all times, especially high-risk groups who are encouraged to get vaccinated to reduce the risk of infection, serious complications, and death.

KOTA KINABALU: To tackle recurring cases of food poisoning in schools, the Sabah Health Department has launched an innovative programme aimed at educating pupils about food safety and hygiene through fun and games. The Germ Buster Challenge 2025 at SK Tanjung Batu Keramat in Tawau last weekend brought together 361 students and 28 teachers from 11 primary schools across the district. Organised by the Health Department's Food Safety and Quality Division, in collaboration with the Tawau district Health and Education offices, the programme featured activities that reinforced the importance of food safety, particularly in school settings. 'Food poisoning in schools is often caused by a mix of factors, from poor hygiene among food handlers to unclean premises and unsafe food storage," said state deputy Health director Sitti Aralas, who launched the programme. "But it also comes down to awareness. 'Through this challenge, we aim to instil basic food safety habits in children from a young age in a fun and memorable way." Two core components of the event were a food safety and hygiene talk and Explorace, an interactive event with challenges linked to hygiene and food safety. The Explorace saw SK Tanjung Batu Keramat emerge as overall champion, followed by SK Jambatan Putih in second place and SK Holy Trinity in third. Sitti said the event highlighted not the need for clean food handling in school canteens and vendors, as well as the importance of encouraging children to practise 'look, smell and taste' before consuming food. 'This is about empowering students with knowledge that can help them stay healthy and even potentially save lives. Good hygiene habits start young,' Sitti added. The organisers intend to help curb food-borne illnesses and promote a culture of cleanliness and awareness in school communities through such proactive education programmes.

Malaysia Records First COVID-19 Death In 2025

The fatality occurred during Epidemiological Week 24 (8–15 June). The individual, who had serious pre-existing health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, had not received the second booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. MoH noted that this was the first COVID-19 death since 26 May 2024, and a significant drop compared to the 57 COVID-related deaths reported in 2024. COVID-19 Cases on the Rise, But Situation Under Control As of Week 24, Malaysia has reported 21,738 cumulative COVID-19 cases in 2025, with the weekly average hovering around 900 cases. However, MoH did flag a 68% week-on-week spike, with 3,379 cases reported in Week 24 compared to 2,011 the previous week. Despite the increase, the ministry assured that the national COVID-19 situation remains stable and below the national alert threshold. In terms of severe cases, six patients were admitted to the ICU, all with underlying health issues. Kelantan Records Decline In Dengue Cases, Wolbachia Mosquito Release Shows Results

KOTA BHARU, June 20 (Bernama) -- The number of dengue fever cases in Kelantan dropped by 12.5 percent, with 875 cases recorded in the first half of this year compared to 1,000 cases during the same period last year, said State Health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin. However, he noted that the number of dengue outbreaks rose to 66 from 50 in the same period, although no fatalities were reported. 'This year, there have been no dengue hotspot localities in Kelantan. The current trend remains low, with 17 cases reported in epidemiological week 24. 'Kelantan currently ranks ninth among Malaysian states with the highest number of dengue cases,' he told Bernama at the Gotong-Royong Mega Perangi Aedes 1.0 launch and release of Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes, officiated by state executive councillor for Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment, Hilmi Abdullah. Dr Zaini also reported that 180,414 premises have been inspected for Aedes mosquito breeding grounds in Kelantan as of mid-June this year, resulting in 501 compounds issued, amounting to RM250,000. He said a total of 73,900 Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes have been released in Pondok Terusan, Pasir Tumboh, and Kubur Maras, Kota Bharu in 2021, and in Bandar Baru Kubang Kerian today. He noted that no dengue cases have been reported in Pondok Terusan since the release, compared to 134 cases over the previous five years. 'In Kubur Maras, only two dengue cases have been recorded, one each in 2023 and 2024, compared to 81 cases in the five years before 2021,' he said. Dr Zaini added that the Ministry of Health (MOH) has spent an estimated RM705,500 over the past four years on dengue control efforts in Pondok Terusan and Kubur Maras.
