NEW DELHI: "Baap re baap (Oh my gosh!)" --
Animesh Kujur
could barely cope with the humidity as the 2025 athletics season was still picking up pace in Chennai.
Along with a host of competitors, April's Indian Open Athletics Meet brought punishing heat and stifling humidity. For the 21-year-old from Odisha, it was too hot to handle.
"I actually got heatstroke both before and after the events. I had to run four races in a single day and just couldn't stay hydrated," Animesh, Asia's current top-ranked 200m sprinter, tells

in a free-wheeling chat.

'We didn't plan hydration properly. I train in somewhat similar conditions in Odisha, but I didn't think it'd be that extreme.'
Battling heat
Just five days later,
Animesh
was due to race at the Senior Federation Cup in Kochi. As the extreme Kerala heat made national headlines, training was out of the question; recovery was all he could manage.
"I wasn't sure if I'd be able to perform well there either," he recalls.
Still nursing fatigue, he qualified for the final and clocked 20.60 seconds in the semis. 'I could feel I was running at 95% of my potential.'
With stalwarts like Manikanta Hoblidhar (former 100m national record holder) and Amlan Borgohain (former 100m and 200m national record holder) in the mix, the final needed more than potential.
'I stuck to my plan and pushed hard in the last 100 metres. After crossing the finish line, I didn't celebrate. I was just staring at the clock, waiting to see if I'd gone under 20.50.'
Then it flashed: 20.40 seconds. A new national record.
Animesh Kujur
'It felt unreal,' Animesh recollects. What followed was a familiar celebration, arms pointed to the sky in a lightning bolt, a tribute to his idol.
'When I got into athletics in 2021, the only name I knew was Usain Bolt; tall, skinny, a bit like me, even the same skin tone,' he laughs. 'Over the last two years, I've started leading the 100m and 200m fields in India. Bolt has been such a big inspiration that I always try to recreate his signature pose.'
Breaking records
Breaking records is now Animesh's habit. Later in April, he teamed up with Gurindervir Singh, Manikanta, and Amlan at the National Relay Carnival in Chandigarh.
The quartet clocked 38.69 seconds to set a new national record in the men's 4x100m relay, after just one training session together.
Animesh, who trains in Bhubaneswar, had to join the others in Mumbai just before the meet. 'James Hillier sir (the athletics director at Reliance Foundation) helped us a lot with baton exchanges, the steps, the rhythm, everything,' says Animesh.
'My coach,
Martin Owens
, manages everything: how I eat, sleep, behave, and where I go. Just two years ago, my life was completely different. Now it's fully professional. I can feel the difference,' he admits.
Football's loss, athletics' gain
Athletics, however, wasn't initially in his scheme of things, as Animesh started out playing football in school.
'During Covid, I couldn't just sit at home,' he says. He began jogging with army aspirants. Someone suggested he try a state meet in November 2020. Unaware it was a national qualifier, he went and surprised everyone.
In January 2021, he ran his first nationals without formal training, finishing fifth in both the 100m and 200m. Coming from a family of police officers and defence personnel, Animesh was once urged to quit sports due to the future uncertainty around the field and the fear of fatal injuries: 'My mother was worried about the injuries and lack of stability in sports. She asked me to quit. But my uncle and father backed me.'
He remembers: 'In 2022, around 12:30 am, I was sitting outside with my dad and uncle. My mom was completely against athletics. But my uncle stood by me and told my dad, 'Let him try, yaar. I'm with him — let's see how it goes.' That support meant everything.'
Three years on, Animesh has become one of the brightest stars in Indian athletics. As his parents now beam with pride, their son is busy taking selfies with his followers.
Just last week, he clinched gold in the 200m at the UAE Athletics Grand Prix, clocking 20.45 seconds, a new meet record, and the fastest time by an Indian in an international race.
Virat Kohli was always a VIBE during India's practice sessions
Later this month, he will line up in Gumi, South Korea, aiming for glory at the
Asian Athletics Championships
and a ticket to the World Championships.
'I want to hit 20.20 seconds. I've already clocked 20.32 -- unofficially, but it gave me confidence,' he says. 'The qualifying mark for Worlds is 20.16, but a gold medal in Gumi will get me in anyway. I'm ranked No.1 in Asia right now, so the goal is to stay consistent.'
It is going to be a long road ahead for Animesh, but the sprinter definitely knows the importance of patience and perseverance, and that he is just off the blocks.

IND vs ENG: 'Feeling to wahi hai jo ... ': Rishabh Pant breaks silence on Sunil Gavaskar's 'stupid to superb' u-turn

Rishabh Pant (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: Six months ago, Rishabh Pant faced heavy criticism from legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar , who had slammed him as 'stupid, stupid, stupid' following a reckless dismissal during the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the MCG. Fast forward to the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Headingley, and Gavaskar's tune has changed dramatically. After Pant's stunning century, he called it 'superb, superb, superb.' Pant's 134 against England marked his seventh Test century, making him the Indian wicketkeeper with the most hundreds in the format, surpassing MS Dhoni 's tally of six. It was also Pant's third Test hundred in England — a remarkable feat, as no other visiting wicketkeeper has scored more than one Test ton in the country. I changed some of my mistakes through my hardwork and focus, as well as being disciplined towards my cricket. It gives me a lot of satisfaction and feels very exciting,' Pant told Pujara in a video posted on social media. Pant celebrated the century with a front handspring — a gesture he's embraced since childhood. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'I had three celebrations in mind – of an OK sign on the eye (which footballer Dele Alli does), another was 'let bat do the talking'. Then I thought, I will quietly do the one I know well. I have been doing it from my childhood (handspring).' 'I trained in gymnastics in school. I am very used to it since childhood. Even if you wake up me up in the middle of the night, I can do this. After the accident, I had to work harder for doing this. I worked on it and it's now easy for me to do it,' said Pant in a chat with veteran India batter Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of Day 3. Sitanshu Kotak press conference: Big revelation on Shubman Gill Pant also shared his mindset in the moments leading up to the milestone, which he reached with a one-handed six off Shoaib Bashir over mid-wicket. 'When (Shoaib) Bashir was bowling in the previous over, I thought I should get to the hundred. I didn't want to play percentage cricket and take a risk. He was bowling well, so I respected it and took a single.' 'In the next over when he came, I told him before 'if you keep the field close-in, I will hit the big shot'. Luckily, I was batting on 99 and I was confident. The pressure was there, but I wanted to play on the merit of the ball.' Pant's comeback ton comes on the heels of a mixed IPL 2025 season with Lucknow Super Giants, though he did end the campaign on a high with a century against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Reflecting on his preparation for the Test series, Pant explained the technical and mental adjustments he made. 'In my mind, I wanted to cut down on a few shots (in preparation for Tests after IPL). I wanted to play in the V. If you have seen it, I haven't played a lot of shots to balls that were bowled wide. I wanted to play straight and rest of it would be seen after. In my mind, the thought process is always to try read the bowler's thinking – like what is he trying to do.' 'Once an idea is made, the thought from me is to put the bowler under pressure as I can hit him out. So playing with the bowler's mindset and trying to disturb him is important, as if you allow the bowler to hit the right areas, so he's always on the top. So playing with that, and then coming back to your zone – this balancing act is just getting more refined – and I am enjoying this a lot.' On his improved defence and discipline at the crease, Pant added: 'Mostly it's about the area – if the ball is in a good area, I try not to do too much. Like if a bowler is in a good spell or is working on a set-up, its fine. But when the bowler is not in rhythm, then I try to capitalise on it towards my side. When a bowler is bowling well, I try to defend well against him or leave, as that's the mindset.' Follow all the live updates, scores, and highlights from the India vs England Test match here . Tennis: Marketa Vondrousova beats qualifier Wang Xinyu to win Berlin Open

Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova needed three sets to subdue Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu on Sunday and win the Berlin Open title, completing an improbable run to her first trophy since her London triumph two years ago. The 25-year-old Czech, who had dropped to 164th in the world after an injury-plagued 12 months, was playing her first final since winning Wimbledon in 2023. She was made to work hard for a 7-6(10) 4-6 6-2 victory and even had to save six set points in the tight first-set tiebreak. "Nice to see a full crowd. I really enjoyed the tennis week and the support," the Czech said after winning her third career title. Live Events "Congrats on a great week, you played an amazing match," she said, addressing Wang. "It was an amazing week we had everything we needed. "I feel like it could not have been better for us here. We were all working really hard. We came here to try and win the first match. So very happy," Vondrousova added. Wang, who had to battle through the qualifying process and then beat four top-20 players to reach her first-ever tour final, kept causing problems with her pinpoint accuracy as she fired repeated baseline winners. Vondrousova's serve looked unbreakable until Wang earned her first break point in the seventh game, breaking Vondrousova who slipped and hurt her ankle on that point. But the Czech came back to snatch the tie-break after the 23-year-old Wang had wasted six set points. The 23-year-old showed few nerves in her maiden singles tour final and levelled after breaking her opponent once in the second set. But Vondrousova, who beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the first round and world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals in Berlin, raced back with two breaks of her own to go 4-1 up in the decider. She then played a perfect service game at 5-2, with a superb dropshot, a crosscourt backhand winner and a powerful forehand that forced an error by Wang on matchpoint number one.
