India bloc intact; SP to contest 2027 UP polls as part of it: Akhilesh
LUCKNOW Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said the INDIA bloc is intact and asserted that his party will contest the 2027 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh as part of the opposition grouping.
The former chief minister also said that the SP is fully prepared for the panchayat polls likely to be held in the state early next year.
To a query on a recent statement by Congress MP Imran Masood regarding seat sharing between the SP and the Congress in 2027, Yadav said: 'We are not bothered about any such statement...India bloc is intact and we are firmly with it. Those who are unhappy can walk out...the alliance will contest the elections together.'
A few days back, Masood had told media: 'We (Congress) will contest with all our might. And if there is any understanding, it will have to be respected mutually. The seat-sharing formula for the 2024 Lok Sabha election will not work in 2027.'
Both the Congress and SP are members of the opposition INDIA bloc, which was formed ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to take on the BJP. The SP won a whopping 37 LS seats while the Congress's tally was revised from zero to six, giving it a new life in the state.
On Tuesday, the SP chief met representatives of Pasmanda Muslims and assured them of taking note of the issues faced by the community. Yadav also said he will ensure that issues faced by the weavers' community are included in the party manifesto for the upcoming elections.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Yadav said: 'The BJP government has ruined electricity infra, healthcare and education system. If the proposal sent by the BJP government to increase power tariff is implemented, then electricity will be very expensive. Business and industries will not be able to run. It will become difficult to even charge mobile phones.'
'The quality of primary schools has deteriorated...children are not going to schools. The government has ruined secondary schools along with primary schools. Healthcare services have collapsed and medical colleges do not have staff and resources as per standards,' added the SP chief.
Speaking on the inclusion of the Pasmand community in PDA, Yadav said, 'PDA is united against the misrule, injustice, atrocities and corruption of the BJP government. It is an emotional alliance that includes all people who are suffering, unhappy and insulted by the BJP government. The Pasmanda community is a part of PDA. When the SP forms government, the Pasmanda community will be given full political respect.'
The former UP CM further attacked the BJP government on the issue of unemployment, alleging that business, jobs and employment were not on the agenda of the BJP government. 'The government has not even purchased 20% of the wheat. The chief minister had gone out to do an aerial survey of crops. Aerial surveys are done by those people who cannot face the farmers. All the figures of the government are false. Crop purchase centres were not opened at many places including Kannauj,' said the SP chief.
He said people responsible for the June 12 Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad must tender their resignations.
'Think about the accident that happened in Ahmedabad, no one has resigned till now. Think about what happened -- one moment they were alive, the next moment they were not. In so few seconds, people lost their lives. Where the aircraft fell, how many doctors died? How many people lost their family members,' asked Yadav.

Speaking to the ANI, Baxipatra highlighted that the grant allocated to Odisha has decreased compared to the previous year. He also claimed that several major schemes, including the PM Awas Yojana and Jal Jeevan Mission, have been allocated zero funds. 'One year has been completed, but Odisha received no benefits... The grant that Odisha had to get decreased since last year... Multiple schemes have zero money like PM Awas Yojna, Jal Jeevan Mission...', Baxipatra said on Saturday. The BJD leader also expressed concern over the rising incidents of crimes against women and children in the state, with 15 rapes reported daily and over 26,000 FIRs filed in the past year. 'In the last year, Odisha has topped in atrocities on women and children. 15 rapes are happening each day and 26 to 28 thousand FIRs have been filed,' he added. Further, the BJD leader also expressed concern over the state's health crisis, citing the deaths of over 100 people from cholera and diarrhoea. He claimed that investment in the state has come to a standstill, with a significant drop from Rs 37,000 crores last year to just Rs 40 crores this year. Baxipatra also criticised the BJP government's vision for the state. 'Over 100 people have died from Cholera and Diarrhoea in the state... Investment has stopped - investment of Rs 37,000 crores came in last year, while not even Rs 40 crore was received this year, and Jharkhand has surpassed us in this... We worry that the truth of the state is not somehow reaching the Prime Minister.', Baxipatra stated. The BJD leader slammed the BJP government, saying it lacks vision. 'Odisha has witnessed 16% growth under Naveen Patnaik and according to the present vision document, there will be only 9% growth in 2036 when the state completes 100 years. The government has no vision, it does not know how to function, has no experience in administration and it is not ready to learn... They should take a tutorial class to run this government,' he said. Earlier, it was announced that in the absence of former Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik, the duties of the party office will be managed by its Political Affairs Committee. Additionally, Debi Prasad Mishra, Senior Vice President, Headquarters, will oversee the coordination of activities and programmes. The former CM has announced that he will undergo a medical procedure for cervical arthritis in Mumbai. In an office order issued on Wednesday, Patnaik stated that during his absence, the day-to-day affairs of the BJD will be managed by the party's Political Affairs Committee. Vaishali (Bihar) [India], June 22 (ANI): Jan Suraaj Party chief Prashant Kishor on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, and the Congress, accusing them of failing to bring meaningful change to the state over decades. Addressing a 'Bihar Badlav Rally' in Vaishali, Kishor said, 'For 40-45 years you voted for Congress, then you voted for Lalu Yadav for 15 years. For the last 20 years, Nitish Kumar has been the CM... But the life of the people of Vaishali has not been you vote as I will tell you, then proper arrangements for your children's education and employment will be made here in Vaishali itself...' Criticising what he described as opportunistic voting patterns, Kishor asked the crowd, 'In Vaishali and the whole of Bihar, many people voted for Modi ji and the BJP out of greed for 5kg of grains. They are stealing 1kg of rice, and people are receiving only 4kg, right or wrong?' Panama cuts internet, cell phones in restive province
Panama City: Panamanian authorities on Saturday partially suspended internet and mobile phone service in a western province where a state of emergency was in effect after two months of anti-government unrest. Right-wing President Jose Raul Mulino declared the emergency on Friday, suspending freedom of assembly and movement in Bocas del Toro province, where protesters have set up roadblocks and damaged the airport, businesses and offices. The National Authority for Public Services said on X that based on the emergency decree, "the temporary suspension of mobile phone and residential internet service has been coordinated in the province of Bocas del Toro until June 25." Internet service would remain available for health care, businesses and government entities, the agency said. Anti-government protests began almost two months ago in the major banana-producing region of Bocas del Toro. They turned violent Thursday in the city of Changuinola when groups of hooded individuals looted businesses and partially set fire to a baseball stadium with police officers inside, authorities said. The unrest has seen one dead, more than 100 arrested, and dozens injured, including 13 police officers, according to authorities. Mulino has been facing protests on several fronts in recent months. Workers with US banana giant Chiquita in Bocas del Toro went on strike in late April over pension reforms adopted by Congress, which critics say will force them to work longer. Chiquita sacked thousands of workers over the strike. The banana growers' unions called off their protest last week in a bid to reverse the layoffs but other groups have remained at the barricades. Besides the pension reforms, Panamanians have also been in the streets over a deal Mulino struck with US President Donald Trump in April allowing US troops to deploy to Panamanian bases along the Panama Canal. The US Embassy in Panama issued a security alert Friday prohibiting American government staffers from traveling to Bocas del Toro "until further notice."
