18 in a row for Alcaraz in Queen's Wimbledon statement

Yahoo8 hours ago

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz has edged powerful Czech Jiri Lehecka 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 to claim his second Queen's Club Championship title and send out a powerful statement ahead of his Wimbledon defence.
Spaniard Alcaraz, who triumphed at the same venerable London championship a few weeks before claiming his first Wimbledon title in 2023, extended his winning streak to 18 matches but was pushed hard by Lehecka who underlined his own credentials as a rising force.
Alcaraz, 22, pounced at 5-5 to break the Lehecka serve and duly bagged the opening set in 45 minutes in Sunday's final.
Lehecka, bidding to become the first Czech to win the Queen's title since Ivan Lendl in 1990, continued going toe-to-toe with the five-times grand slam champion and edged the second-set tie-break with some clinical tennis.
Alcaraz had more in his locker though and forged 4-1 ahead in the decider as Lehecka's level finally began to drop on a breezy Andy Murray Arena.
He then broke the 23-year-old Lehecka's serve again to complete victory, letting out a roar of a delight as Lehecka struck a backhand into the net.
While Alcaraz will be seeded No.2 at Wimbledon behind Jannik Sinner as he bids for a hat-trick of titles there, he will arrive in red-hot form and as overwhelming favourite.
He has won 27 of his 28 matches since April, his lone loss coming against Holger Rune in the Barcelona final, and Sunday's win was his fifth title this year.
"This is really special this trophy and this tournament for me," Alcaraz said on court as he clutched the huge piece of silverware.
"Jiri had an incredible week and his level is very high and it's a nightmare to play against you," he added, to his opponent.

Lehecka, whose ball-striking and physique are not dissimilar to Lendl's, beat home favourite Jack Draper in the semi-finals on Saturday and began full of confidence against Alcaraz whom he beat at the start of the year in Doha.
With serve dominating on the slick lawn, there was nothing between the players until Lehecka made a couple of errors at 5-5 and Alcaraz needed no second invitation to take the set.
The second set followed a similar pattern but it was Lehecka who raised his game in the tiebreak to get a mini-break ahead.
Alcaraz replied to win a sensational point at 3-4, sprinting to retrieve a drop shot and then back to chase down a lob.
But Lehecka did not flinch and banged down an ace. Alcaraz double-faulted at 5-5 and then Lehecka levelled the final.
Lehecka was unable to carry that momentum though and Alcaraz quickly re-established control and surged to victory.
"The goal this week was just to compete and have a few matches on the grass and this final was a gift for me," Alcaraz said.
"I just enjoyed the moment and the final, I felt like I was in control most of the time."

Alonso says Rudiger complained of racist insult

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger (centre) leaves the field after complaining of being racially abused following the Spanish giants' win over Mexican side Pachuca (Paul ELLIS) Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said his defender Antonio Rudiger had complained of a racist incident at the end of Sunday's 3-1 Club World Cup win over Mexican club Pachuca. Rudiger was visibly angered after an exchange of words with Pachuca's Gustavo Cabral after the final whistle and spoke to Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti Abel. Advertisement Asked about the incident in the post-match press conference, Alonso said: "Toni told us something, we support Toni and we will see what happens. "I think the FIFA protocol has been activated to investigate, but if it has happened, all measures should be taken and we support Antonio because it's something unacceptable. "In football there is no tolerance for this, and if it happened, then measures should be taken. This is what Antonio has told us and we believe him. It's being investigated now," he said. Pachuca coach Jaime Lozano was also asked about the incident but said he was unaware of what had happened. Advertisement "I just found out from you, you are letting me know, we did not talk about it in the dressing room, I haven't spoken to Cabral about this, I cannot give you an explanation about it because this is the first (I have heard of) this news," he said. "It cannot be justified at all but I will talk to him, I've known him for a little while and and I have never heard of something like that with Pachuca players. I cannot defend my captain at any cost but I will talk about it with him," he said. FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. sev/rcw

Huijsen already key for Real Madrid

Follow live reaction after Real Madrid got their first win of the tournament having played most of the game with 10 men Getty Images All looking very easy for Madrid now, as Valverde knocks in Brahim's cross. Move was again started by an excellent 60-yard ball out from the back by Huijsen for Vini to chase. The young centre-backs's distribution really is excellent, and already seems quite key for Alonso's new-look team. Getty Images 72' Real Madrid 3-0 Pachuca It was another clinical attack from Real Madrid. A lovely pass from Dean Huijsen whipped down the left channel for Vinicius Junior, who was running beyond his marker but from his own half, hence no offside. He latched onto it, collected the ball, played it inside to Valverde. Two on two. Passed to Brahim Diaz, and then the Uruguayan set off into the box as Pachuca defenders tried to recover. A superb left-footed chipped pass, Valverde sprinted forwards, extended his leg and flicked it in on the volley past a helpless Carlos Moreno in goal. That will be that! Getty Images 70' Real Madrid 3-0 Pachuca There is a goal, but it's not for Pachuca! Fede Valverde with it! Getty Images 69' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Pachuca surely need a goal soon if they are to take anything from this match... Getty Images That was class from Madrid to play out of their own half when they were pinned back into a corner near Thibaut Courtois' penalty area. Strong work from Alexander-Arnold and Bellingham with Modric doing what he always does. If Madrid fans wanted olé Pachuca, that was their opportunity. 63' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Almost a carbon copy of a Pachuca chance a few minutes ago! John Kennedy, who should have started based on what he has shown since coming on, picks up the ball left of centre outside the penalty area and fires a curling effort on goal towards the bottom-right corner. Good power and placement. Good isn't good enough when Thibaut Courtois is the man between the sticks though! Madrid still struggling just to hold the ball and calm the game down. Another double change from Alonso, with Modric and Ceballos introduced to (hopefully, for them) do just that. Off go Guler and Bellingham, both the goalscorers. The coach definitely not afraid to make decisions or changes. Getty Images 61' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Real Madrid take off Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler, on come Luka Modric, who gets a fine reception, and Dani Ceballos. Pachuca with two changes of their own, attacking midfielder Javier Eduardo Lopez and defender Carlos Adrian Sanchez Nava on for Kenedy, which will see Gonzalez push forward to the wing I think, and right-back Luis Rodriguez respectively. 60' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca On the hour mark, we see some replays of those Courtois saves, first from Gonzalez's mishit cross, which was actually better than I initially gave it credit for. A fantastic glove on it to divert it over. Then a plunging stop low to his left to spurn John Kennedy, who has been excellent and lively since coming on. Getty Images 58' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Pachuca have now had 16 shots to their opponent's seven, and six shots on target to Real Madrid's two. Madrid have two goals. Pachuca none. Those are the margins. 56' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Gonzalez with a cross-shot from the left, Courtois parries it over and it's a Pachuca corner. Palavecino lays it back, crossed into the back post, and a Pachuca head nodded it back across goal, before Rondon slid in to push it narrowly wide! The offside flag was up though. Another shot on target as Rondon swivels and shoots, straight at Courtois. Pachuca putting the pressure on! 55' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Vinicius Junior with an expression of disgruntlement as he accuses teenage midfielder Elias Montiel of a foul. A bit of argy-bargy and finger-pointing. We move on. Getty Images 53' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Real Madrid look better with 10 men than they did with 11! In fact, they appear as if they are the side with an extra player. They're just pinging the ball around with ease, casually and slightly mockingly waiting static until being closed down before popping it off to a team-mate. Pachuca are getting frustrated and flying into a few tackles. 50' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Madrid centre-half Dean Huijsen has been seriously impressive. He has been calm and composed on the ball, while stepping in aggressively at times to win the ball too. Get yourself a defender that can do both. Getty Images Xabi Alonso's change at the break sees Gonzalo Garcia off and Brahim Diaz on. A bit harsh on the young centre-forward, who was involved in both Madrid's goals. But it means a more clear 4-4-1 shape now for the 10 men, with Brahim on left of midfield, and Vini Jr up top on his own. 46' Real Madrid 2-0 Pachuca Changes for both sides! Pachuca take off midfielders Alan Bautista and the quiet Alexei Dominguez Figueroa and bring on club captain, 39-year-old centre-half Gustavo Cabral, and striker John Kennedy. Madrid take off striker Gonzalo Garcia and bring on attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz in his place. Getty Images Back into the action here in Charlotte! Getty Images Madrid keeper Courtois spoke to DAZN at the break, about Asencio's sending off. 💬 'It's twice in two games now, the same mistake. It might have been only slight contact but he has to be a bit more intelligent. But he knows that. We are going to battle for him and win without him. And then when he returns, to win then too.' Getty Images Real Madrid fans have been calling to see more of talented youngster Arda Guler and you can see why. Given a central role by Xabi Alonso today, he transitioned well into a slightly deeper area after the red card but did not let that limit his creative involvement. Here's the moment he made it 2-0 after a nice link-up with Trent.

Bellingham confirms shoulder surgery after Club World Cup

Real Madrid's English midfielder Jude Bellingham confirmed he will have surgery on a shoulder problem at the end of the Club World Cup (Paul ELLIS) Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham confirmed Sunday he will undergo surgery on a long-term shoulder issue after the Club World Cup ends. The England international has been struggling with discomfort after dislocating it in a La Liga match in November 2023, and playing with a brace under his shirt since then. Advertisement With Madrid keen on securing Club World Cup victory, they scheduled the operation for after the final, with Bellingham potentially missing the start of the La Liga season as he recovers. "I've got the point where... I'm fed up with the brace, and having to tug on it and having (other) players tug on it, and it rearranging all the time," Bellingham told DAZN after Real Madrid beat Pachuca 3-1 in Charlotte. "I've got a surgery scheduled for after the tournament, I think we scheduled it a few days after the final obviously, so I'll go and do the surgery and get it fixed. "I'm really happy about that, it's been a long time coming. I think I've come to the end of my patience with the brace. Advertisement "The physio here and the doctor here have been unbelievable helping me to be fine playing game in game out, (but) I'm at that point now where I'm ready to have a free shoulder and free body in terms of the brace." Recovery from the surgery could take up to 12 weeks according to reports, so as well as Madrid's first league games, he may also miss England World Cup qualifiers in September against Andorra and Serbia. Bellingham found the net in the win over Madrid's Mexican opponents, a day after his younger brother Jobe Bellingham struck for Borussia Dortmund. The Madrid midfielder said he had been thinking about getting even ahead of the Pachuca game, which was new coach Xabi Alonso's first victory at the helm of Los Blancos. Advertisement "Everyone's been caning me yesterday, saying he's better than me. I had to do something today," he added. "We're one-one now and we'll see for the rest of the tournament." rbs/rcw
