Mozambican attempted rape suspect beaten by locals in Redcliffe
A 39-year-old Mozambican national, who allegedly attempted to rape a 29-year-old South African woman, was caught and beaten by community members in Redcliffe, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday 13 May.
According to the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) residents contacted Operations Centre around 16:51, reporting that a mob was attacking a man on Valley View Drive.
Reaction Officers responded swiftly and located the injured suspect, who had sustained blunt force trauma and whip marks to his head and body.
The crowd fled before the first responders arrived.
Officers interviewed several residents at a nearby informal settlement and traced the alleged victim to her home.
She told officers that the accused entered her tuck shop and waited until all customers had left.
He then allegedly assaulted her and dragged her into a room, where he attempted to rape her.
Her screams reportedly drew the attention of nearby residents, who rushed to her aid.
The suspect allegedly fled on foot, but community members gave chase.
As more residents joined the pursuit, the crowd grew in size.
They eventually caught up with the man on Valley View Drive, where they allegedly assaulted him before notifying RUSA.
Reaction Officers handed the suspect over to the Verulam South African Police Service (SAPS).
Authorities have launched an investigation into the alleged attempted rape and the mob assault that followed.

'She is still alive': Joslin Smith hope renewed
The National Prosecuting Authority has renewed hope that little Joslin Smith is still alive despite being missing for over a year. The Salanha Bay girl's disappearance has sparked a national, and even international, rescue effort. 'Everything that was found in all of those dunes, all the bones, all the clothing, was analysed, there were no positive DNA results found on anything. She added that much of the case hung on the state witness Lourentia Lombaard. The NPA was also banking on the possibility that Joslin's mother would testify. 'We were always hopeful during the trial that the accused would come and testify in the main trial. The plan was to destroy their credibility and demonstrate the improbabilities in their versions. Yes, their decision to remain silent, especially Kelly, was very disappointing,' she added. Meanwhile, Joslin's mother Kelly Smith as well as Appollis and van Rhyn have filed their notices this week for leave to appeal their convictions and sentences. The NPA are also awaiting the fate of the state witness Lourentia Lombaard, whose verdict will be announced by Judge Erasmus at an appointed date. A 204 inquiry will determine if Lombaard will be granted indemnity based on her testimony. If the court does find that Lombaard did not testify truthfully, she could face prosecution for perjury and related charges. City Power cuts supply to property housing undocumented migrants
City Power, with support from Johannesburg's Public Safety Department, disconnected electricity at a residential property in Houghton following the discovery of illegal and hazardous living arrangements. On Wednesday, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) raided the house and found about 90 undocumented foreign nationals crammed into the premises. Also, the authorities cited severe overcrowding, poor sanitation, and non-compliance with municipal by-laws. The living conditions raised alarm over safety, public health, and the unlawful use of City services. City Power swiftly disconnected the building's electricity through a high-level intervention. 'In line with City Power's mandate to uphold the integrity of the electricity grid and ensure lawful consumption, our team removed the feeder cable supplying the property and the internal cables within the yard,' said spokesperson Isaac Mangena. Furthermore, he confirmed that this action, known as a Level 3 disconnection, is the most severe cut-off used only in serious electricity infrastructure abuse or illegal connections.
