Israel Adesanya wants Sean Strickland rematch: 'I gotta get some get backs' Former UFC middleweight champ Israel Adesanya wants revenge against Sean Strickland, the fighter who ended his second title reign.
Israel Adesanya is eager to get back on track by getting one back on Sean Strickland, who ended his second UFC middleweight title reign.
Adesanya (24-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) was pleased with his preparation for his first fight of 2025, but still came up short against Nassourdine Imavov in February. After 12 consecutive title fights, "The Last Stylebender" competed for the first time without gold on the line, a period stretching back to February 2019.
Some believe Adesanya's best days are behind him. He acknowledges that he's older as a fighter, which has prompted changes in his approach to fighting, but is still finding inspiration in seeing friends like Alexander Volkanovski win big title fights. Despite the recent string of losses and competing less often, Adesanya recently caught the itch again after a rare sparring session with Kamaru Usman.
"I didn't spar after my last fight because I did so well in the fight, so well in the camp, and I didn't get the result I wanted," Adesanya said in a video on his YouTube channel. "But I was like, I'm still proud of myself. I'm still proud of the way I worked. So then I didn't spar because I just looked after my brain, and then when I was in Miami recently watching Volk get his belt back in Miami as well, then I sparred with Kamaru Usman for the first time in months. I knew once I sparred, I'd be like, 'Man, y'all got any fights?'
"So for me now, I'm like, OK, I told Hunter (Campbell) already, I told coach, that it's time. I just knew, and I know who. I have a feeling who I want to fight. You'll like this one. I gotta get some get back. Strickland. I'm gonna get him back."
At UFC 293, Strickland clearly defeated Adesanya on the scorecards with identical 49-46 scores across the board to win the middleweight title and end Adesanya's second reign. It was a stark contrast to the fight prior, where Adesanya created one of the best highlights in recent history by knocking out Alex Pereira at UFC 287 to reclaim the title he lost to Pereira six months prior.
Adesanya credits Strickland for his performance that fateful night in Australia, but if he gets the rematch, this time around he'll be doing it for the younger version of Adesanya who was bullied as a kid.
"Because he beat me fair and square in Sydney, five-nil," Adesanya said when asked by David Goggins why he wants to rematch Strickland. "Just whooped my ass badly. And again, that was one of the things what made me realize that I need to slow down in my activity. I was fighting like three, four times a year as a champion. So, I was like, I'm going to pull back now because I'm older, I'm doing things different. So, I don't want to make excuses, because he beat me, but then I just want to show him, if you beat me at my best. This time, I'm gonna come at him correct."
"Everything he's done since that – because, I used to get bullied a lot as a kid," Adesanya said. "So, he's an embodiment of that in a sense. He attacked the young me, the inner child. So, I just want to protect him and get some get back for him."

Matt Dennish more than held his own against the pros at the Fanatics Games. (Credit: OBB Media) Dennish is a 39-year-old high school teacher at his alma mater, Red Lion High School in York, Pennsylvania. He was one of 50 average fans who got the chance to compete against the pros for the top prize of $1 million, and he finished in third place to win a 2003-04 LeBron James rookie chrome refractor card, last valued at $250,000. Dennish later traded the card to Brady for $250,000 cash, plus a signed Brady card and jersey. Brady said he would give $5,000 to every fan who competed and donate the rest of his earnings to charity. He stands 6-foot-6, was a standout cross-country and track runner and a basketball player in high school. He ran a 4:08 mile his freshman year at East Carolina, and he said his recent accomplishments included hitting a half-court shot at a Philadelphia 76ers game and working himself down to a two handicap on the golf course. Advertisement Dennish beat out such pros as Kevin Durant, Eli Manning, Dwight Howard, Rob Gronkowski, Denny Hamlin, Russell Wilson, C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Julian Edelman. Contestants were scored in eight contests, and the lowest two numbers were dropped. Dennish came into Friday's competition most nervous about the WWE Superstar entrance since he isn't a fan of wrestling. "A friend who is a fan convinced me to do Joe Hendry," Dennish told cllct. "I got a belt that our high school women's wrestling team bought and took off my shirt." Dennish got 70 total points in the WWE event, good for 10th-best score of the day. The MLB pitching accuracy was next. Contestants were given six pitches to score as many points as they can by hitting targets. The top and bottom corners were worth five points. The middle strike zone was one, and all the rest were three. Dennish shined, hitting four five-pointers, a three and a one. No one did better. Next he hit the NHL washer-dryer puck shooting contest, an area he knew would be difficult. He's not a hockey guy. Given 12 shots, he failed to knock in one, only lifting the puck successfully once. Advertisement In the NFL QB skills, Dennish was impressive. He went 3-for-5 in the 10-yard toss and the 20-yard toss and missed the golden ball, a 30-yard toss, by a foot or two. Dennish also finished 11th overall in the UFC striking challenge, hitting the punching bag for a total of 75.5 points. The FIFA goal-scoring was a strategy game for Dennish. He hit six out of eight in the bottom corners for five points each, but then got greedy by trying the top corners for 10 points and missed them all. He came in sixth. "It's basically all I do these days," he said. The challenge? The contestants had five chances to get the ball on the green at a 105-yard par-3 hole, simulated from Oakmont Country Club, the site of last week's U.S. Open. One point for the green, two points for within 15 yards. Dennish came away with a respectable four points, placing three on the green and one within 15 feet. Brady finished first, and Dennish was fourth, one spot ahead of Manning. After competing, Dennish sat around eating some pizza and reloading the scores. Before he headed home on his train back to Pennsylvania, he saw he was in third place behind Brady and just ahead of Manning. Travis Hunter visited Coach Prime in Texas ❤️ Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has been dealing with an unspecified health issue, but is on the mend, according to his eldest son Deion Jr. Deion Jr. posted a video to his YouTube account Saturday that showed Sanders fishing at his estate in Texas with former Colorado football star Travis Hunter. "It's a beautiful thing," Deion Sanders Jr. says in the video. "Coach Prime back active, moving around. God is great. Not back active moving around, but it's progress." The Colorado head coach has been away from the program since April and did not attend the university's annual youth football camps earlier this month. Sanders' return to Boulder is still uncertain, but he appears closer to resuming his full-time duties soon with the latest update. He is scheduled to attend the Big 12 Conference Media Days on July 9 in Frisco, Texas. The video is encouraging, as was a recent visit by Sanders' former Dallas Cowboys teammate, Michael Irvin. The two Hall of Famers were seen laughing at Sanders' Texas estate with Irvin joking about throwing a party when Sanders returns to Boulder. While the health issue does not seem to be too serious, Sanders admitted in late May that he lost 14 pounds. As Colorado awaits Sanders' return, the Buffaloes continue gearing up for the season, with Georgia Tech set to visit Boulder for the Aug. 29 opener.
