Aziz Ziriat's body was found nearly five months after he and his friend Samuel Harris went missing while hiking in the Dolomites in Italy, according to BBC News
The pair, from London, were reported missing in early January after missing a flight home on Jan. 6 from their trip to the mountain range
Harris' body was on Jan. 8, however, the search for Ziriat continued all this timeThe body of a British hiker missing in the mountains since Jan. 1 has been recovered after five months of searching.
On Saturday, May 31, emergency responders found Aziz Ziriat's body in the Dolomites Mountains in northern Italy, according to BBC News. In doing so, they brought an end to search efforts that started after he and his friend Samuel Harris went missing in early January.
The pair, who were last heard from on Jan. 1, were was reported missing after they did not make their Jan. 6 flight home, the outlet reported.
Harris' body was recovered on Jan. 8, shortly after search and rescue efforts commenced, according to previous reporting by BBC News. At the time, they also found the cover to Ziriat's phone. However, weather and other conditions made the search challenging.
The outlet noted that Ziriat, 36, was found "lying in a rocky crevice" and was only "around 1,300 ft." away from where Harris, 35, was found.
In a statement to the outlet, a spokesman for Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue said the rescuers "lowered themselves down the wall below the base of the slope, where the dog finally signalled the missing man's body in a rocky crevice, where it had been covered by snow".
A cause of death has not yet been revealed. However, the BBC previously reported that a possible cause was a fall "from above."
It is also not clear what happened in the pair's final hours together. They were last confirmed to have visited a mountain hut near Tione Di Trento.
Alpine Rescue, Guardia di Finanza Rescue and Italy's Carabinieri (a military organization similar to the police) all assisted in the recovery efforts.
Ziriat and Harris were described as "experienced hikers" by a college friend, per BBC News.
The former's family issued a statement in January, saying that they were "devastated by the tragic events of the last few days," according to multiple outlets, including Sky News.
"Our appreciation for the co-ordinated work and expertise of the Alpine Rescue, emergency services and volunteers in Italy is immeasurable," they said. "The work they have been doing, battling against challenging terrain and weather conditions, and their commitment to finding Aziz has been outstanding."
The statement concluded: "We hope, with all our hearts, he will be found and brought home soon."
Ziriat's girlfriend Rebecca Dimmock spoke out at the time, saying that it was "not unexpected" that he and Harris would go "off-grid" while hiking.
"I think they wanted to have some nights where they were out in nature and in fresh air and sleeping in the wild. They have all the gear and they've done hikes before," she said, according to U.K. newspaperThe Times.
She received a text from him on New Year's Day. That same day, the outlet reported that they alerted loved ones that their phones might die.

British wingsuit champion Liam Byrne, 24, dies in Swiss Alps base jump

A 24-year-old British wingsuit flyer was killed on Saturday during a base jump in the Swiss Alps, local police said in a statement. The man was later named as Liam Byrne by his parents, who released a statement to the BBC, paying tribute to their son's 'bold spirit and kind heart.' Byrne was experienced in wingsuit flying, a strand of skydiving that involves wearing a specially designed suit to maximise gliding time before deploying a parachute. He became a British champion in the sport in 2022, recording the fastest speed in the advanced category. More recently, he was the subject of a BBC documentary, 'The Boy Who Can Fly,' which traced his dreams of flying like a bird and his careful preparations to do so. On Saturday, he and two other wingsuit flyers launched a jump from the Gitschen mountain in central Switzerland at approximately 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) above sea level, but he deviated from his intended course for unknown reasons, Swiss police said. He crashed into a rocky outcrop at approximately 2,100 meters (6,900 feet) above sea level and suffered fatal injuries, the statement added. CNN has reached out to Byrne's family and Britain's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for comment. Growing up in Stonehaven, a small town on Scotland's northeast coast, Byrne was always drawn to adventure and extreme sports. According to his LinkedIn profile, he had climbed Mount Kilimanjaro by the age of 12, covered 500 kilometers (310 miles) with his own team of huskies through Norway, Sweden and Finland by 14 and qualified as a skydiving instructor by 19. 'Liam was fearless, not necessarily because he wasn't afraid but because he refused to let fear hold him back. He chased life in a way that most of us only dream of and he soared,' his family said in its statement. 'Skydiving and base jumping was more than just a thrill for Liam – it was freedom. It was where he felt most alive.'

Disneyland Paris booked for sick $150K ‘wedding' between adult and 9-year-old girl

Disneyland Paris workers were horrified to find a large wedding they were hosting was between a man and a 9-year-old girl — with the groom and child-bride's mom arrested in what is now thought to have been a sick $150,000 social media stunt. The French amusement park had been hired early Saturday for the ceremony in front of the Sleeping Beauty castle, with no forewarning that the bride was just a child, Le Parisien reported. Some 300 guests and a string quartet arrived at around 5 a.m., before the park was open for regular tourists — with horrified employees only then seeing how young the bride was, BFMTV reported. 5 Disneyland Paris was closed for a fake wedding between a 9-year-old girl and an adult man. BFM TV The 'scared and confused' little girl was wearing a wedding dress and five-inch heels 'taped to her feet,' Le Parisien reported. Staff called police, who arrested four of those involved — including the would-be groom, a 22-year-old British national, BFMTV said. They also arrested the 41-year-old mother of the 9-year-old girl, both of who had arrived in Paris from Ukraine two days before the sick ceremony, according to the report. Police also arrested two Latvian nationals, a 24-year-old woman recruited to play the role of the bride's sister, and a 55-year-old recruited to act as her father, BFMTV reported. 'The latter, who initiated the call to Disneyland Paris security, explained that he had been recruited to play the role of the bride's father for [$13,840] and had discovered at the last minute that the bride was 9 years old,' the deputy prosecutor of Meaux said in a statement. 5 A string quartet and hundreds of extras were hired for the vile stunt. BFM TV French prosecutors are looking at whether the wedding was a sick stunt for social media — one that cost at least $150,000. An ad was published online days earlier asking for extras, including 200 adults and 100 children aged between 5 and 15 to take part in a high-end wedding rehearsal, according to BFMTV. 5 The extras had no idea they had been hired for a sick stunt. BFM TV The oblivious extras met in Paris at around 4 a.m. on Saturday morning where a bus was waiting to take them to Disneyland. But at 6 a.m., park staff asked them to leave. 'We all thought we were going to attend a wedding… Everyone was stunned, no one expected it,' one of the hired extras told Le Parisien. 5 The park was hired out before it had opened to the public on Saturday. BFM TV 'Disneyland did things very well. They canceled everything as soon as they realized the bride was a child. We were shocked to see that,' they continued. 5 Disneyland Paris has been praised for quickly alerting police on realizing the bride was a child. Around $150,000 was spent on hiring out the amusement park and paying for extras, while the groom's appearance had been altered, according to BFMTV. 'The investigations, including the medical examination of the minor, a Ukrainian national, showed that she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts,' the prosecutor's office said, sggesting it was all 'a set-up.' Two people, the fake groom and the fake bride's sister, remain in custody and have been charged with 'fraud and breach of trust' against Disneyland Paris, which has also filed a complaint against the pair, BFMTV reported. Both were scheduled to appear in court in the town of Meaux on Monday as part of the opening of a judicial investigation. Disneyland Paris said it was' fully cooperating with the authorities in their investigation.':
