Steve Jobs Once Cited Leonardo Da Vinci's Example To Explain Why All 'Major' Thinkers Had This Trait That Made Them Exceptional

Steve Jobs once argued the greatest innovators are "both the thinker and doer in one person," invoking Leonardo da Vinci to prove that creativity and execution rarely succeed apart. What Happened: Addressing engineers in the early 1990s, the Apple (NASDAQ:APPL) co-founder said, "The doers are the major thinkers. ... Did Leonardo have a guy off to the side thinking five years out what he would paint? Of course not. Leonardo was the artist, but he also mixed all his own paints." Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — Jobs's point is that discovery flows from hands-on mastery. "It's very easy to take credit for thinking," he said. "Dig a little deeper and you find the people who really did it were also the people that worked through the hard intellectual problems as well."Veteran biographers note Jobs often cited Renaissance polymaths to justify Apple's marriage of hardware, software and It Matters: The thinker-doer thesis now frames a broader debate over when entrepreneurs hit their stride. Census Bureau data show founders aged 40-plus are likelier to build high-growth firms than their twenty-something peers, a pattern echoed by late-blooming icons such as Ray Kroc at McDonald's Corp. (NYSE:MCD) and Sam Walton at Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT). The gap reflects years spent 'doing,' honing skills and spotting problems first-hand before leaping to 'think' up solutions. Modern CEOs frequently echo Jobs. Tesla Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Elon Musk reposted the quote last year with a one-word endorsement: "True." Venture capitalist Paul Graham tells founders to "learn by building" because abstract ideation rarely survives first contact with users. For Jobs, that convergence of art and engineering remained Apple's guiding doctrine until his 2011 death. "There is no difference in our industry," he said. "The people that have really made the contributions have been the thinkers and the doers." Read Next: Invest early in CancerVax's breakthrough tech aiming to disrupt a $231B market. Apple Is Facing Another Siri AI Lawsuit, This Time From Shareholders

PCMag editors select and review products independently. If you buy through affiliate links, we may earn commissions, which help support our testing. Apple is being sued for delaying Apple Intelligence features once again. This time, the lawsuit comes in the form of a federal securities class-action on behalf of all individuals or entities who purchased Apple shares between June 10, 2024, and June 9, 2025. Filed by shareholder Eric Tucker, the lawsuit names CEO Tim Cook, current CFO Kevan Parekh, and former CFO Luca Maestri as defendants. It claims that the company promoted a supercharged Siri for iPhone 16 despite knowing it wasn't ready. "Unbeknownst to investors, Apple lacked a functional prototype of these advanced AI-based Siri features at the time of the 2024 WWDC and had no reasonable basis to believe it could deliver the product it was advertising within the iPhone 16 product cycle, if ever," the lawsuit says. The complaint also notes the number of times Apple promoted the Siri features on its website and YouTube since June 2024 before removing them and announcing they were behind schedule in March 2025. Apple's stock hit an all-time high in December 2024 and fell in March after an executive told Daring Fireball that Siri features would not be available until 2026. As MacRumors notes, the case is yet to be certified by a judge, but the plaintiffs have alleged violations of US securities laws and demanded relief for damages. Similar claims have been noted in at least three other lawsuits filed by iPhone 16 users. They claim they have had to pay a premium for some iPhone 16 features that are not yet available. The device launched in September 2024, and the delayed Siri features won't reportedly arrive until iOS 26.4 in spring 2026. Among those delayed is Siri's ability to tap into users' personal context and take actions based on what's on the screen. According to a demo at WWDC 24, when you ask Siri about the arrival details of a flight you booked, it would be able to go through your email, find the ticket, search for its live status on the web, and then provide a response. Responding to what caused the delay, Apple software boss Craig Federighi recently said that things started falling apart when the team tried to merge old Siri code with new. Following the debacle, Siri has been completely shifted to the new code to meet the quality standards customers expect from Apple, Federighi added.

iPhone 17 Colors: Is Purple the New Color for the Base Model? We're Tracking the Rumors

Got your sights set on the next iPhone? The latest colorful rumor that came out last weekend is that the iPhone 17 base model could come in purple or green. In a post on X, well-known leaker Majin Bu teased the potential new colors for the iPhone, saying that Apple may just choose purple. And earlier this month, there were rumors of sky blue being added to the color lineup, too. We'll get to all of that in a minute. While the rumored iPhone 17 may get a new camera design and faster charging capabilities -- and even a skinnier model -- the colors are always the fun, fresh and exciting updates to me. Over the years, we've been surprised by new iPhone colors, like yellow, pink and ultramarine. The current iPhone 16 and 16 Plus color options are ultramarine, pink, teal, white and black. The iPhone Pro and Pro Max come in four titanium colors: desert, natural, black and white. The rumored iPhone 17 is rumored to drop in September, so until Apple says more, we're all playing the guessing game, with the help of some leaks and rumors. Here's what we're hearing about possible iPhone 17 colors and a look at past color options. I'm Impressed With iOS 26. Apple Just Made iPhones Better I'm Impressed With iOS 26. Apple Just Made iPhones Better Purple could also be in the works Bu posted another rumor on X and their blog recently that Apple is testing purple and green, but that purple could be another new color for the iPhone 17's base models. Bu said that purple could meet Apple's rumored demand for more personalization while blending into Apple's ecosystem for its other products. If green is added to the iPhone 17 lineup, Bu says it could be a "fresh and natural tone, ideal for a minimalist yet striking aesthetic." The biggest rumored color so far: sky blue Here is the MacBook Air M4 in Sky Blue, the same color that the iPhone 17 Pro might come in. Josh Goldman/CNET The biggest rumored color for the iPhone 17 is sky blue. Bu posted the rumor of the new color on their blog, calling it "a refined, bright, and modern shade." But why sky blue? Perhaps because the latest M4 MacBook Air currently comes in sky blue, so an iPhone with the same color could be an aesthetic win for sky blue MacBook owners. Could an aluminum iPhone design bring more colors? Here is the iPhone 16 (left), 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. James Martin/CNET The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have a titanium frame, but analyst Jeff Pu predicted that the iPhone 17 could usher in the return of the aluminum frame for both the Pro and baseline models, as we've seen with earlier versions like the iPhone 14 lineup. Considering the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max's colors are based on titanium, it raises the question: Will an aluminum frame mean new colors? The one phone in the iPhone 17 lineup that could have a titanium frame is the rumored slimmer iPhone 17 Air, according to Pu. We'll have to wait and see what Apple decides. Read more: WWDC Bored Me. I Need Apple's iPhone 17 Launch to Make a Splash A look at past iPhone colors Here is an iPhone 14 Pro in Deep Purple. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Apple likes to release both new and familiar colors for every new iPhone release. Usually, we see more color variations for the basic models, and more neutral colors for the Pro and Pro Max iPhone models. For instance: The iPhone 14 came in six colors: midnight, starlight, red, blue, purple and yellow. However, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models only came in black, silver gold and deep purple. The same is true for the 15 model phones, but Apple offered one fewer color for its base model. iPhone 15 models were available in pink, yellow, green, blue and black, while Pro and Pro Max models arrived in more neutral tones like white, blue, black and natural titanium. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max colors didn't change from the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. However, the other iPhone 16 models were available in ultramarine, teal, pink, white and black. How many new colors we may see from the rumored iPhone 17 is still unclear, but as of now, a sky blue option could be in your future.
