Come Fall in Love: The DDLJ Musical review – loud, kitsch and joyous
On its release in 1995, Bollywood blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ to its fans) spawned a new genre of Hindi film. A star-crossed romance about London-dwelling young adults Raj and Simran, the three-hour epic explored the lives of a new generation of diaspora Indians born abroad and navigating changing family values.
Thirty years on and DDLJ has become one of the highest grossing Bollywood movies of all time, still screening at the Maratha Mandir cinema in Mumbai. For the many fans used to singing along to its songs on wedding dancefloors, director Aditya Chopra's stage adaptation will come as a surprise.
With new music from Bollywood production duo Vishal-Shekhar and an updated story by Mean Girls co-writer Nell Benjamin, Come Fall in Love supplants Punjabi boy Raj with all-English 'Rog' (Roger) to produce a multiracial take on the diaspora tale.
The racial dynamics and narrative beats are broad-brushstroke. Billionaire progeny Roger (Ashley Day) is the son of divorced parents and doesn't believe in lasting love, while straight-A student Simran (Jena Pandya) is a second-generation immigrant striving for an immaculate romance while promised to a family friend in Punjab. The pair are an unlikely couple, until they find themselves Interrailing around Europe and sparks fly.
So far, so predictable. Yet, Day and Pandya have an undeniable chemistry, flitting around one another with nimble coyness and furtive passion, leaving the audience rooting for their inevitable love. Rob Ashford and Shruti Merchant's choreography is equally engrossing, making full use of the ensemble cast to dart around and leap over Derek McLane's intricate set, while standout solo performances come from Kinshuk Sen as clowning fiancee Kuljit and Kara Lane as Rog's mother, Minky, in the raucous number Hot and Independent and Hot.
Vishal-Shekhar's bhangra, reggae and disco music may not reach the melodramatic peaks of the original film's yearning melodies but closing number Holi Hai is infectiously celebratory, leaving the audience on their feet. It is testament to the fact that while Come Fall in Love isn't the most nuanced or complex investigation of diaspora identity, it is joyously loud and kitsch, expertly embodying the tenets of the Bollywood art form.

Emmanuel Macron wants French house music to be recognised on Unesco's intangible heritage list. Citing Berlin's techno culture, which was added to Germany's national intangible cultural heritage list in 2024, the president said French house music, also known as Touch, is just as influential and deserves Unesco recognition. 'We're going to do that too. I love Germany, you know how European I am, but we don't need any lessons. We are inventors of electro. We have that French Touch,' he told music station FG on the show 'Happy Hour'. It means French house artists such as Daft Punk, David Guetta and Bob Sinclar could be added to Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Mr Macon's comments coincided with Fête de la Musique — or Music Day — a free outdoor music festival celebrated at bars, cafes and public spaces across France every year on the summer solstice. A music style that originated in the 1990s, French house is identifiable by the use of filtered and phased effects on vocals, the blending of funk, disco and house elements, and the sampling of tracks from the 1970s and early 1980s. Some of the most recognised tracks in the genre include Phoenix's 1999 hit Heatwave and Daft Punk's 1998 chart topper Music Sounds Better With You. French house was given a place of honour at the Paris Olympics last year, when artists such as Kavinsky, Phoenix and Air performed at the closing ceremony. Mr Macron's wife, Brigitte, 72, is said to be an electronic music fan. In an interview with Le Parisien, Kavinsky said he accepted an invitation extended by the first lady to perform at the Élysée Palace for the 2018 edition of Music Day. 'This lovely woman knows all my songs and listens to me every time she flies. Emmanuel Macron listens to classical music, Schubert, Wagner, but he was very nice,' the artist said in a 2022 interview. Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage list includes traditions, knowledge and expressions that shape cultural identity. It can include oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, knowledge and craftsmanship. Other French traditions that have received Unesco status in recent years include the skills of Parisian zinc roofers, French falconry, bear festivities in the Pyrenees and baguette bakers.

Disneyland Paris calls in police over alleged fake wedding with child ‘bride'
French police were questioning two people on Sunday after Disneyland Paris was hired for an alleged fake marriage ceremony involving a girl aged around nine. The theme park complex outside Paris had been hired for what was presumed to be a genuine private wedding early on Saturday morning before opening hours. But Disneyland staff and security called police when they noticed that the so-called bride, wearing in a wedding dress, was too young. After police investigated, the local prosecutor's office in Meaux said the event was not a real marriage ceremony. 'The event turned out to have been staged, the guests themselves were all actors,' the deputy local prosecutor told Agence France-Presse. 'So it wasn't a wedding but the staging of a wedding, which was filmed with around 100 extras. They had privately hired Disneyland Paris claiming it was a real wedding.' Four people were arrested and taken into police custody. Two were still being questioned on Sunday on suspicion of fraud and money-laundering. They included a man said to have been the fake groom, who is alleged to have organised the event. He is 22 and thought to be British, AFP reported. A 24-year-old Latvian woman was also being questioned. The young girl, who is Ukrainian, was not found to have suffered any 'violence or constraint', the prosecutor's office said. Her mother, aged 41, was released from questioning, as was a 55-year-old Latvian man. Disneyland Paris is Europe's most-visited theme park and can be hired for weddings at a very high price outside opening hours, with its Sleeping Beauty Castle as a backdrop. It was uncertain for what reason a fake wedding might have been staged there, nor the role of the child. The local daily paper, Le Parisien, reported that extras who were to attend in the role of guests were taken by bus to the area. One of the acting extras who was hired to attend what she thought was a real wedding told France Inter radio: 'I saw the panic of the Disney people, then, through the window, I saw a small child with a wedding dress on. A woman was carrying her in her arms and that's when I understood that the child was really young.' Disneyland Paris told the station: 'A private event booked at our destination was immediately cancelled by our staff after irregularities were identified. Police were called and arrived quickly.' The theme park said it was cooperating with authorities and had filed its own legal complaint.
