Kolkata: A fire broke out at a hologram manufacturing factory in Salt Lake Sector V on Friday, scaring techies and locals alike. This incident was particularly alarming as it followed closely on the heels of a devastating blaze at a Burrabazar hotel.
Friday's fire started around 2 pm at
Holoflex Limited
, a company specialising in security holograms for Aadhaar cards, voter cards, RuPay payment cards, and other brands, besides labels. It is located at CN Block in Sector V. There were around 100 employees at the unit when the fire broke out. A large stockpile of flammable chemicals at the unit fuelled the blaze. As many as 12 fire tenders took more than two hours to douse the blaze. Firemen confirmed that no one had to be evacuated and that there were no injuries.

"The movement of fire tenders was slowed down because of rampant parking on the road, and we have informed the cops about the same," said Sujit Bose, the state fire minister. Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Mukesh Kumar was also on the spot. When asked about the issue of parking that had hindered fire tender movement, he said, "The majority of places where vehicles are parked are notified fee parking areas by NDITA. We will check if there are any unauthorised parking areas operating here."
Company officials said the fire started in the machine room and soon spread to other units. The thick black fumes rose were visible from Chingrighata flyover and Biswa Bangla crossing. The company is yet to ascertain extent of its loss but its director, Pancham Kumar Surana,claimed to have taken fire NOC and factory licence to run the unit.

4 cabbies held for killing youth over love affair in Lucknow
Lucknow: Madiaon police and crime branch jointly arrested four men for murder of Krishna Gupta, 26, resident of Radha Gram Duda Colony in Thakurganj for his relationship with the sister of the prime accused. All four, arrested near Madiaon flyover on Jun 20, were taxi drivers. On Jun 19, his elder brother, Suraj Gupta, filed police complaint at Madiaon police station, stating that Krishna was murdered by Sanjay Yadav alias Monu, following an altercation over Krishna being in relationship with Sanjay's sister. FIR was registered under sections 103(1), 115(2), and 351(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. SHO, Madiaon, Shivanand Mishra, said the accused confessed to the crime. "The accused invited Krishna to drink with them and murdered him with a heavy iron rod, a wrench (pana) and blades. His body was dumped near Ghailla Bridge. Police recovered the blood-stained iron rod and wrench used in the murder," said Mishra. The body was found on June 20 with fatal injuries on the neck, head and face. Following investigation, police added Section 3(5)/238 of the BNS to the charges. Sr citizen under ‘digi arrest' loses 3.4 cr
Kolkata: The Kolkata Police arrested two individuals, Kundan Mishra (33) and Debjani Nag Biswas (52), from north Bengal on Friday for extorting Rs 3.4 crore from a 72-year-old man from Golpark, threatening him with "digital arrest". The accused posed as police officers and threatened the senior citizen would be arrested for allegedly uploading pornographic content on a website. "The accused, Mishra, a self-proclaimed advocate at the Jalpaiguri court, and Biswas, a clerk at Siliguri Municipality, were arrested following a two-month probe into a cyber fraud case that was registered on Nov 1 last year," said joint CP (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar. Police seized a laptop, three mobiles and several bank documents from them. According to the complainant, he lost Rs 3.4 crore after being targeted by the scamsters impersonating officers from TRAI, Mumbai Police and the cybercrime department. The incident, which occurred on Sept 18, 2024, began with a call, accusing him of uploading pornographic content online. The fraudsters then obtained the victim's Aadhaar details and sent forged Supreme Court orders to coerce him. Using threats against his family, they forced him into liquidating his investments and transferring funds to multiple accounts. The fraudsters also allegedly created fake documents bearing logos of ED, RBI, and CBI. They then persuaded the victim to transfer his life savings under the guise of a govt scheme for black money recovery.

Afghan national living illegally in Cuttack arrested at BPIA
Bhubaneswar: Immigration authorities arrested an Afghan national at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here on Saturday. The accused, Mohammad Yousaf (54), was apprehended upon arrival from Dubai on an IndiGo flight. He was living in Cuttack under a false identity for several years. DSP (immigration) Samapika Patnaik lodged a police complaint against Yousaf. Yousaf, who was posing as an Indian citizen under the name Yaha Khan, was caught when immigration officials detected discrepancies in his documents during routine verification. A lookout circular (LOC) issued by Kolkata airport aided in his identification. Based on preliminary investigation, city police said Yousaf illegally entered India in 2018 and since then established a sophisticated network of fraudulent documents, including an Indian passport, Aadhaar card, PAN card, voter ID and driving licence. He was residing in Cuttack, while conducting business operations under his assumed identity. During searches, authorities seized multiple fake identity documents, Indian and foreign currency, a mobile phone, gold jewellery, and around Rs 80,000 in cash. Bank documents under his false identity were also recovered. "His intention behind using fake documents to reside in Odisha is being verified. Some Afghan nationals known to him have been doing sari business for long. But we are investigating all angles," said police commissioner S Dev Dutta Singh. The accused has been remanded in judicial custody while investigation continues to uncover the full extent of his activities, police said.
