Alberta government to fund 16 new collegiate programs for career preparation
Alberta's education ministry will fund 16 new school collegiate programs to increase opportunities for students looking for an early jump on careers.
Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says $27.5 million already in this year's budget will fund space modifications, equipment and startup costs for the new programs, which will begin in September.
New collegiates will focus on training in various vocations, including skilled trades, technology, aviation, business and first responders.
"If an individual has a strong passion for a particular area and they know they want to go into that area, let's help accelerate their journey," Nicolaides told CBC News Thursday. "Let's help accelerate their high school programming, their post-secondary programming, and get them into those occupations as quickly as we can."
Nicolaides is announcing the details in a Calgary airport hangar Friday afternoon.
This year's startup funding recipients include Edmonton's public and Catholic school divisions, the Canadian Rockies school division in Banff in southern Alberta, the Northland School Division in northern Alberta and the Medicine Hat public and Catholic school divisions.
A "collegiate school" is a program in the junior- or senior-high grades at a public, Catholic, francophone, charter or private school, that tailors a student's education for a specific career path.
Nicolaides said students must be offered hands-on learning, and connected with post-secondary institutions and employers to either earn some post-secondary credits during their training, or line up prospective work after graduation.
The province now has 12 active collegiate programs, including five that began in fall 2023, according to the Education and Childcare Ministry. The funding announced Friday will also help four existing collegiates to improve their facilities.
The minister received 18 funding applications to start new collegiates, approving 16 of them, ministry press secretary Garrett Koehler said in an email.
The government has also budgeted $8 million, for each of the next two fiscal years, to create more collegiate programs, Koehler said.
Nicolaides said he doesn't have a target number of total programs in mind, as the proposals come from schools and divisions.
The programs are a worthwhile investment because employers in some sectors struggle to find skilled workers, he said.
"We need more young people to enter into particular occupations," he said.
"If we can pair people up and move them through the training process a lot faster, there's significant benefit to the economy and industry," he said.

Steady Comps Momentum: Will TJX Sustain its Winning Run?
The TJX Companies, Inc. TJX delivered comparable store sales growth of 3% in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, with all four major divisions contributing to the gain. The growth was entirely driven by increased customer transactions. This strength reinforces TJX's positioning as a reliable traffic magnet in off-price retail, especially as economic uncertainty pushes consumers toward value-driven formats. HomeGoods led the way with comparable sales up 4%, with strength at both the HomeGoods and the HomeSense banners. Marmaxx, the largest division, posted 2% comparable sales growth, with stronger momentum noted in March and April after a weaker February that was impacted by adverse weather. TJX Canada and TJX International (which includes Europe and Australia) each reported 5% comparable sales gains, helping to offset foreign exchange pressures. Management attributed the results to well-curated assortments and broad customer appeal, supported by close-to-need buying and sourcing flexibility. These factors have contributed to ongoing market share gains, particularly as more consumers seek value-driven retail options. TJX is off to a strong start in the second quarter. It is guiding for 2-3% comparable sales growth for the quarter. As tariffs and macro pressures build, the focus shifts to whether this consistent traffic-driven performance can hold up, especially as promotional intensity rises across retail. Still, TJX's ability to post positive comparable sales across categories and geographies highlights the enduring strength of its off-price model. Tracking Comp Sales: TJX's Peers, Costco and Burlington, Side by Side Costco Wholesale COST reported total company comparable sales growth of 5.7%, or 8% when adjusted for gas and FX, in the third quarter of fiscal 2025. U.S. comparable sales rose 6.6% (7.9% adjusted), driven primarily by 5.5% traffic growth. Costco highlighted strong member engagement and continued focus on delivering value. Sales were supported by price investments, growing Kirkland Signature penetration and sourcing flexibility in response to tariffs, helping Costco maintain its competitive positioning. Burlington Stores BURL reported flat comparable sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. Comparable sales declined in February but improved in March and April. Burlington maintained full-year comp guidance of flat to up 2%. Management cited tax refund delays, weather impacts and external uncertainty. Burlington continues to focus on merchandising flexibility and sourcing shifts to navigate tariffs and stabilize sales performance through the year. Is the Options Market Predicting a Spike in Rogers Communications Stock?
Investors in Rogers Communications Inc. RCI need to pay close attention to the stock based on moves in the options market lately. That is because the July 18, 2025 $40.00 Put had some of the highest implied volatility of all equity options today. What is Implied Volatility? Implied volatility shows how much movement the market is expecting in the future. Options with high levels of implied volatility suggest that investors in the underlying stocks are expecting a big move in one direction or the other. It could also mean there is an event coming up soon that may cause a big rally or a huge sell-off. However, implied volatility is only one piece of the puzzle when putting together an options trading strategy. What do the Analysts Think? Clearly, options traders are pricing in a big move for Rogers Communications shares, but what is the fundamental picture for the company? Currently, Rogers Communications is a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) in the Diversified Communication Services industry that ranks in the Top 37% of our Zacks Industry Rank. Over the last 60 days, one analyst has increased the earnings estimates for the current quarter, while two have dropped their estimates. Given the way analysts feel about Rogers Communications right now, this huge implied volatility could mean there's a trade developing. Oftentimes, options traders look for options with high levels of implied volatility to sell premium. This is a strategy many seasoned traders use because it captures decay. Additional Francophone childcare spaces open in Antigonish County
More Francophone childcare spaces will be accessible for families in Antigonish County, N.S., through a new centre operated by the Centre d'appui à la petite enfance de la Nouvelle-Écosse. 'The demand for childcare spaces in Antigonish continues to grow,' said Brendan Maguire, minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. 'This expansion responds to long-standing challenges faced by local families, who have had limited access to francophone childcare in their community.' The centre will be co-located on Conseil scolaire acadien provincial property at École acadienne de Pomquet, a new release said. The centre will receive $3.5 million from the province for the project, which will provide 40 new childcare spaces for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. It is expected to open next spring. 'Childcare has a profound influence on children's overall development, including their language skills and identity,' said Jaime Battiste, member of parliament for Cape Breton–Canso–Antigonish, on behalf of Patty Hajdu, federal minister of jobs and families. 'This investment will provide 40 new childcare spaces and help meet the needs of francophone families in Antigonish. With Nova Scotia, we are adding to the nearly 7,000 childcare spaces already announced, so more families in Nova Scotia can save thousands of dollars every year on childcare.' The funding is through the Canada-Nova Scotia Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement. Nova Scotia has signed a five-year extension to the agreement as well as the Child Care Agreement and the Canada-Nova Scotia Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, worth more than $1 billion total.
