Controversial 'Forever Marilyn' statue heading for new home, will get facelift
For those hoping to snap a selfie of "Forever Marilyn" before she is moved, your time is running out.
The 26-foot-tall statue will be moved beginning Sunday. The larger than life depiction of Marylin Monroe isn't going far, though. She is being placed less than 100 feet away, out of Museum Way and in the Downtown Park.
'We look forward to 'Forever Marilyn' having a permanent home in Palm Springs so we can reflect on all the positive attention she brings to our community, ' Peggy Trott, Chair of PS Resorts, which owns the statue, said in a news release. 'In 2024 alone, the statue welcomed more than 996,033 visitors. From social media posts to neighborhood group discussions, the outpouring of love for 'Forever Marilyn' has been incredible. It will be wonderful to focus solely on all the happiness she brings to the residents and visitors of Palm Springs moving forward.'
In addition to being moved, the statue will be cleaned and the paint refurbished. The entire operation is expected to end on Feb. 28.
The move is part of a settlement from a lawsuit brought by the Committee to Relocate Marilyn, which objected to the statue's location in the middle of a public street. Some members of the group have also criticized the statue, which depicts Monroe from the 1955 movie "The Seven Year Itch" with her dress blowing up in the wind, as being misogynist.
The lawsuit cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees, and nearly $500,000 in additional funds will be spent on the move, which PS Resorts is paying for.
Despite the criticism, PS Resorts said in a news release a 2021 study showed 86% of Palm Springs residents found the statue to be a "fun and free attraction" while 75% agreed the statue would help promote the city around the world.
Monroe is strongly associated with Palm Springs, having been a regular visitor to the city in the 1950s with her husband, Joe DiMaggio.

National Park Service site in Monroe hosts grand opening at new visitor center
An official celebration of a major update to River Raisin National Battlefield Park takes place Saturday and Sunday in Monroe, Michigan. The park retells and interprets the January 1813 battles of the War of 1812 that were fought in Southeast Michigan and the historical context of the times. The battles were a victory for Tecumseh's Confederation and the British, and a significant defeat for the Americans. The Battlefield was originally part of the Monroe County park system, and was transferred in 2010 to the National Park Service. The visitor center moved in recent years from its original location on East Elm Avenue near I-75 to an existing building a half-mile away at 333 North Dixie Highway. With the move to a larger venue and significant renovations to what was once an ice sports arena, the education center's historical displays were expanded and updated. Annual events include a POW-MIA Day ceremony and flag display, French Noel and the Battles of the River Raisin commemoration. The Grand Opening events begin with a ticketed gala Friday night, and will continue Saturday and Sunday. The visitor center will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday with a ceremony at 10 a.m., ribbon cutting at noon, and performances by the 126th U.S. Army Band Saxophone and Piano Jazz Duet in the afternoon. The center also will be open to the public 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, with the La Compagnie Musical Dance Troupe giving a performance in the afternoon.

Just weeks after the death of Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson, his son, Willie Robertson, has shared a bit of a family update. In an interview with USA Today that was published on June 5, Willie shared that his mom, Kay Robertson, isn't doing well. "Kay is not in the best of health. We're trying to help her out as much as we can," he told the outlet. "Some of it is she is just depressed. She lost her partner of 60 years," he added. Miss Kay, 77, is a part of the Duck Dynasty reboot, but didn't film much due to her ongoing health issues. "Mom was on the show at the beginning so we have some sweet moments with her," Willie told USA Today. Miss Kay did not attend the premiere of the reboot, which was held in Monroe, Louisiana, on June 1. It's been a challenging few months for the Robertson family. Aside from Phil's Alzheimer's diagnosis and subsequent death, Miss Kay wound up in the hospital for more than a week after a nasty fall. During an April episode of the Robertson family's podcast, Jase Robertson revealed that his mom had a cut that got infected after the aforementioned fall. "She has to have pretty much 24/7 professional healthcare," he said at the time.
