NHRA star Ron Capps' funny car explodes, crashes during Arizona Nationals
National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) funny car driver Ron Capps was involved in a scary crash during the Arizona Nationals on Sunday.
Capps' vehicle came off the starting line fast and in the blink of an eye, the top of his car exploded. He careened across the dividing line and into the left guard wall. Capps was able to get out of his vehicle under his own power.
The NHRA said he was examined by the on-site medical team before he was released.
"It was an unfortunate first round, & we are thankful that @RonCapps28 was able to get out & walk away," Ron Capps Motorsports wrote on X. "The @NHRA Safety Safari was right there, & the safety equipment & chassis did its job. Thanks to our awesome sponsors like @theNAPAnetwork and Toyota we will be in Pomona!"
Capps has 75 wins in a funny car and has made 151 final rounds. He had three wins and was a runner-up four times during the 2023 season. In 2024, he reached the final round in four events but failed to secure a victory.
So far this season, he reached the final round in Gainesville, Florida, in the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.
Capps finished third in the funny car standings last year. He was behind champion Austin Prock and John Force, who suffered his own scary crash back in June.
Force has been back at the track this season to root for his family members and drivers as he deals with a traumatic brain injury stemming from the crash.

Dystany Spurlock to Make NHRA History With Support From Foxxtecca
DETROIT, June 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Foxxtecca is making history with professional motorcycle drag racer Dystany Spurlock, who will become only the second Black woman ever to compete in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class. She makes her debut Juneteenth weekend, June 20–22, at her home track, Virginia Motorsports Park, during the Virginia NHRA Nationals. Spurlock joins trailblazer Peggy Llewellyn in one of motorsports' most exclusive and underrepresented clubs, women of color competing at the sport's highest level. Another Dragstrip Closes Down
Read the full story on Backfire News Car enthusiasts in Paris, Texas are mourning after the Paris Dragstrip announced it's closing for now. With tracks getting shut down and bulldozed far too often these days, we hate seeing these stories. But the owners of the dragstrip say there are multiple good reasons for the sad Paris Dragstrip has been around for over 50 years, hosting NHRA sanctioned races on the 1/8 mile strip in Northwest Texas. It's been an outlet for many who have octane in their veins, helping them get their need for speed firsthand or vicariously. But that's gone in a flash and seemingly without warning. The owners of the facility took to the official Facebook page on June 17 to make the shocking announcement: 'After a lot of thought and consideration, we have made the tough decision to close Paris Dragstrip until further notice. 'With the rising cost of operations, a constant shortage of staff, ongoing criticism, and the continued struggle to break even financially — it's simply not feasible to keep the gates open at this time. 'This track has been a huge part of our family, and I know it means a lot to so many of you. I want to personally thank every racer, fan, family, and crew member who has supported us over the years. Your loyalty and love for the sport never went unnoticed. 'This isn't goodbye forever — just a much-needed pause. We will be taking this time to regroup and consider what's next. I appreciate your understanding and support more than you know.' While it's shocking, even infuriating to see another track close down, it sounds like this move might not be permanent. Exactly what 'criticism' the Paris Dragstrip has endured isn't entirely clear. But looking around on Google Maps, the facility seems to be around some homes. We don't know if those houses were built before or after the strip was established, but we do know some people buy homes near racetracks, then complain about the noise.
