Lily Gladstone on Her Rom-Com Turn in ‘The Wedding Banquet': 'I Imagined Myself in Comedy'

Yahoo15-04-2025

After her somber, awards-nominated roles in Killers of the Flower Moon and Under the Bridge, Lily Gladstone has quickly established herself as a top dramatic actress in Hollywood — but she wants you to know she can do comedy, too.
Gladstone makes a rom-com pivot with The Wedding Banquet, starring alongside Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran and Han Gi-chan in a remake of Ang Lee's 1993 original Taiwanese-American film. Gladstone and Tran play a lesbian couple, with Tran's character, Angela, agreeing to marry Han's character, Min — who is dating Yang's Chris — to get him a green card, in exchange for paying for her IVF treatment. Things quickly get complicated when Min's grandmother discovers he's getting married.

For Gladstone, taking on a comedy 'felt like a return to origin. I'm naturally kind of a goofy person; when I was a kid and thought I had any inclination to do any of this, I imagined myself in comedy,' she told The Hollywood Reporter at the film's L.A. premiere on Monday.
'It was kind of a surprise to people who know me that I ended up being such a subtle dramatic actress, so it really just felt like a chance to stretch my wings and be myself a little bit more,' she continued. 'And anybody who knows me well that has seen this film — my best friends who I gave screener links to early on — they're all like, 'This is the most Lily character of all your characters.''
Gladstone said she 'absolutely' wants to do more comedy, and Yang confirmed, 'She is so deeply funny. She can do it all.' Writer-director Andrew Ahn noted that in casting her, 'I had seen interviews with Lily where I was like, 'Oh, she's a goofball, she's funny.' And I get that she has such an incredible presence that people cast her in these dramas but I was so excited to get to work with her where she could be funny and dorky and cute.'

Ahn, who previously helmed Fire Island and Driveways, was given the idea to remake The Wedding Banquet and felt an immediate connection with the material, since the 1993 movie was the first gay film he ever saw. In updating it for 2025, he 'thought about how much has changed for the queer community' when it comes to marriage and having children.
'As a huge fan of the original I went in with the expectation that it would just be an updated retelling,' Yang echoed. 'I was surprised and I was also so blown away by how necessarily modernized it was because marriage is, for now, legal for queer people and you have to sort of work around the plot holes of the original to make sure it works and it's solid and makes narrative sense today.'
The group also weighed in releasing the film in the current political climate, as Ahn admitted 'it's so scary and there's so much anxiety about queer people and people of color and our identities not being recognized or supported. And so my hope is that this film can offer people the opportunity to be vulnerable and open themselves up to art and use that to heal, use that to gain strength so that we can go out there and protect the ones we love.'
Tran added, 'I think it's really, really special to be part of a film that gets to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community at a moment in time when it's being attacked viscerally. It's hard to hold both truths at one time but I'm grateful to be here, hopefully showing the queer community some joy in the middle of this time.'
The Wedding Banquet hits theaters on Friday.

Teachers Who Are Fed Up With Parents Not Taking Part In Their Child's Education — Tell Us What You Wish They'd Do

As a former high school English teacher, I can list all the ways I thought I'd see parents get involved in their child's education — and all the ways it rarely happened. It's unfortunately not an uncommon experience for educators. So I'm asking teachers (past and present) in our BuzzFeed Community to share ways they wish parents took on a more active role in their child's education. Related: Your Wedding Preferences Will Reveal Your Inner Disney Princess Maybe you, like me, used to teach English literature, and found yourself sending progress reports home regularly for students falling behind. However, no one seemed to respond until report cards hit their mailbox. Then, several parents wanted to know what extra credit opportunities could be made available for their kid who was missing dozens of assignments. TV Land / Related: Most People Can't Ace This US Geography Good Luck! Maybe you're an elementary school teacher, and one of your students keeps getting physical with others. Not only is it flat-out mean, but it's also a distraction in the classroom. You've tried to host guided conversations with the parents about techniques that could curb the behavior at home, but the parents refuse to believe it's happening at all. Or, maybe there's a student in your class who is never IN class. Their parent pulls them out of school for vacations monthly. And while you love that the kid is getting to live their best life, it's very hard to keep them on track, and you wish their parents could at least keep them up to date on their studies while abroad. Whatever the case may be, we want to hear about it. Teachers, tell us how you wish parents got more involved in their child's education in the comments. SZA Shares Behind-the-Scenes Footage of a New ‘Guest Star' Collaboration With Lizzo

SZA might be extraordinarily busy as she prepares to head overseas with her and Kendrick Lamar's Grand National Tour — but that didn't stop her from swooping in for a quick recording session with her friend Lizzo. In a series of posts to her Instagram Stories early Friday (June 20), SZA teased fans with a forthcoming collaboration between her and the 'Juice' singer. What started as a glimpse of Lizzo's own new music in the video, the 'Luther' singer started sharing clips of her voice playing alongside Lizzo's in the background. 'Working on a guest star for bookie @lizzobeeating's new mixtape,' SZA wrote in one caption, while calling their link-up a 'lil after-dinner session' in another. While it's unclear whether Love in Real Life is the 'mixtape' SZA referred to in her post, the album has yet to receive an official release date. Earlier this week, SZA opened up to Chappell Roan about her friendship with Lizzo during a conversation for Interview Magazine. Speaking about the first time she and the 'About Damn Time' singer met, SZA praised the 'organic and very random' connection they immediately shared. 'One day, we were on the same tour, and I was like, 'We're about to drive out to Lake Michigan, do you want to come?' And she was like, 'Yeah, let's go,'' SZA recalled. 'And then we just got drunk and hung out, and we kept doing that, and then our lives and careers progressed, and we kept talking and hanging out.' The new song wouldn't be the first time the pair have worked together, either. Back in 2023, SZA appeared on a revamped version of Lizzo's 2022 hit 'Special.' In May, Lizzo even crashed the stage during SZA and Lamar's tour stop in Los Angeles to perform the track with her on stage. The news comes after SZA and her co-headliner Lamar wrap the first leg of their 2025 Grand National Tour. Starting in July, the pair will begin performances across Europe — including shows in Paris, London, Barcelona and Rome — and close out their headline-making run with a set of shows in Australia this December. Amy Poehler Admits ‘I Misappropriated' with Certain ‘SNL' Sketches: ‘We All Played People' We Shouldn't Have

Amy Poehler knows that certain 'Saturday Night Live' sketches during her time on the series haven't aged well. An 'SNL' cast member from 2001 to 2008, Poehler portrayed public figures such as Japanese artist Yoko Ono and former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il during her time at Studio 8H. Now, Poehler has reflected on what she learned from potentially problematic sketches. More from IndieWire 'KPop Demon Hunters' Finds Music That Slays (Monsters) Watch the 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Writers Discuss How They Have Become Experts at 'Pivoting' Poehler said during her 'Good Hang' podcast in the below video that 'getting older and being in comedy is you have to, like, figure out, 'Oh, it's like everything has an expiration date.'' Poehler returned earlier this year to NBC's 'SNL' stage for the 50th anniversary event, which included an 'In Memoriam' segment for such sketches. 'There was even on the 50th, when they had that segment which was like, 'Here's all the ways we got things wrong,' and they showed way inappropriate casting for people,' she said. 'We all played people that we should not have played. I misappropriated, I appropriated…I didn't know.' Poehler added, 'It's very real, and the best thing you can do is make repairs, learn from your mistakes, do better. It's all you can do.' During the 50th anniversary show, Tom Hanks introduced the 'In Memoriam' segment, saying, 'Even though these characters, accents, and let's just call them ethnic wigs were unquestionably in poor taste, you all laughed at them. So if anyone should be canceled, shouldn't it be you, the audience?' Poehler previously recalled being part of the star-studded 'SNL50' special. 'It was a night of famous alumni and people,' Poehler said on the 'Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend' podcast. 'There were so many people that people had to share dressing rooms, so I was sharing my dressing room with Meryl Streep. Just like a fan, I was taking a picture of the door that said my name and 'Meryl Streep,' and it was really cool.' Poehler added '[Meryl Streep] was getting ready for her sketch and really rehearsing it, and I remember thinking, 'I have never rehearsed as hard as Meryl Streep is in this one moment.''
