Waitrose major change to free coffee could see £3 penalty
The supermarket is offering MyWaitrose members the option to 'borrow' a reusable coffee cup, in order to redeem a free coffee when doing their shopping.
It comes as earlier this year, MyWaitrose customers were able to start claiming a free coffee (as long as they had a reusable cup) without buying anything.
This was introduced following a shake-up to the loyalty scheme, which saw Waitrose ditch the free newspaper initiative.
#costofliving ♬ Window Shopper - Instrumental - 50 Cent @catchagemm ☕️ Grab a FREE hot drink from Waitrose everyday .. this has no expiry date and is expected to run for the foreseeable future! When this offer was first introduced, the drink was free with no purchase required, Waitrose later re-introduced the offer with a purchase as a requirement in 2022 however this has now been scrapped and the original offer is BACK The coffee in the machines is from the cafe Nero roasting company! ☕️ #waitrose
But Waitrose has now installed this new 'circular' system in nine of its UK stores last week.
The trial was first spotted in the Newark store by founder of the Meals Collective, Olly Pinder, The Grocer reports.
What is the new Waitrose loyalty perk 'Borrow a Free Cup'?
Advertised in shops as 'Borrow a Free Cup', the new loyalty scheme trial works by customers accessing a cup from a dispenser by tapping their card.
Once released, they can fill the cup with a hot drink of their choice, just as they normally would.
How many cups of tea/coffee should you drink a day?
However, MyWaitrose members will then have seven days to return the cup to a designated point in store or face a £3 charge, as explained by The Grocer.
It's thought the trial will run for the next few months.
A Waitrose spokesperson told Newsquest: 'We're currently conducting a reusable cup trial in nine of our branches – it kicked off this week and is available for MyWaitrose members to use when redeeming their free coffee, or for our café customers to use if purchasing one.'

Waitrose launches own-label viral pistachio chocolate bar
Towards the end of last month, Waitrose launched its own-label pistachio chocolate bar following the recent viral Dubai chocolate craze - the No.1 White Chocolate & Pistachio Nuts with Sea Salt bar.
The supermarket has added pistachio paste to the white chocolate, making it pistachio green in colour.
Additionally, the bar is also laced with chopped pistachios for a more 'authentic' pistachio flavour and 'delicious' crunch, with no katif pastry in sight.

Some of the most notable ones include Too Good to Go and Olio. Too Good to Go's app is free to sign up to and is used by millions of people across the UK, letting users buy food at a discount. Olio works similarly, except users can collect both food and other household items for free from neighbours and businesses. Yellow sticker bargains - yellow sticker bargains, sometimes orange and red in certain supermarkets, are a great way of getting food on the cheap. But what time to head out to get the best deals varies depending on the retailer. You can see the best times for each supermarket here. Super cheap bargains - sign up to bargain hunter Facebook groups like Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK where shoppers regularly post hauls they've found on the cheap, including food finds. "Downshift" - you will almost always save money going for a supermarket's own-brand economy lines rather than premium brands. The move to lower-tier ranges, also known as "downshifting" and hailed by consumer expert Martin Lewis, could save you hundreds of pounds a year on your food shop.

Waitrose has struck a multi-million-pound deal to open a new 30,000 sq ft store in Brabazon, a brand-new neighbourhood rising on the former Filton Airfield in North Bristol — the very site where every Concorde in the UK was built. Set on the ground floor of a seven-storey office building, the new branch will feature Waitrose's full food range, fresh food counters, online grocery shopping, and an on-demand delivery service. Shoppers will also benefit from a nearby multi-storey car park with space for over 1,500 vehicles. Until now, the brand's growth has focused on smaller convenience formats and franchised locations — including recent openings at Welcome Break sites in Spaldwick and Rotherham, and a new convenience store in Southwick, West Sussex. Two more Welcome Break stores, in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, are due to open later this summer, and another convenience store is coming to The Arches in central Bristol. The new Brabazon branch is part of a wider £1 billion investment drive by the John Lewis Partnership to build new stores and upgrade 150 existing ones over the next three years. Waitrose to open first major supermarket in seven years
Waitrose is preparing to open its first new major supermarket in seven years as part of owner John Lewis's renewed focus on retail. The 30,000 sq ft store in Brabazon, a new town being built on the former Filton Airfield in North Bristol, is expected to open in 2027 and will create about 150 new jobs. The supermarket is a major commercial tie-up with the new town, which will be based on the site where Britain's Concorde aircraft were once built. As well as being a launchpad for the regeneration project, the multimillion-pound store reflects Waitrose's ambitious investment plans. The supermarket has set aside £1bn for opening new stores and improving another 150 sites over the next three years, as Jason Tarry, the new John Lewis chairman, spearheads a strategy that is 'relentlessly focused' on retail. The former Tesco UK chief executive replaced Dame Sharon White as chairman of the John Lewis Partnership (JLP) last year. Mr Tarry is seeking to put the retailer back on track after suffering years of successive losses under Dame Sharon. This includes scaling back targets around rental housing and finance, and battling to reinstate the staff bonus. Key to his turnaround is improving Waitrose after the business was overtaken by M&S for the first time last year, according to industry data from Kantar. The supermarket has said it will revamp 20 stores this year, double its normal rate, while it has also announced plans to launch new convenience stores in Bristol, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. James Bailey, managing director for Waitrose, said: 'We are moving up a gear in store investment as we open in new locations and modernise our existing estate to bring the quality, service and value that customers love about Waitrose closer to more people. 'Brabazon is one of the most exciting new city districts in the UK, driving the growth of one of the UK's most vibrant and successful regional economies.' Seb Loyn, of YTL Developments, the business behind the regeneration project, added: 'The arrival of Waitrose in 2027 is not only great news for the thriving community of new residents at Brabazon: it shows that this new city district is now firmly established as one of the most attractive destinations for both homebuyers and commercial investment in the South West.'
