Plan to give saplings to farmers, students to ensure nurturing
Varanasi: Before the annual mega plantation drive begins on Jul 1, with a target of planting 16.97 lakh saplings in the district during monsoon, all departments have been asked to focus on finalising strategy for post-plantation survival.
One of the major components of this strategy will be providing saplings of fruit trees to farmers and students to encourage them to plant and nurture the saplings on their land.
While discussing plans for success of the proposed plantation drive with officials of all departments concerned at a meeting on Wednesday, district magistrate Satyendra Kumar assigned the task to district plantation committee, district environment committee and district Ganga committee to keep focus on ensuring post-plantation survival, as it will serve the actual purpose of the drive.
After divisional forest officer Swati informed the DM that the department's nursery currently has more than 30 lakh saplings against the district target of planting 19,97,520 saplings under Plantation Drive 2025 in monsoon of 2025, the DM instructed all departments to provide at the earliest their sapling demand letters according to their respective targets to the forest department office.
The selection of species to be planted must be included in the sapling demand letter.

"As we go among people with an appeal to plant a tree in the name of mother, every govt employee in the district must plant at least one sapling," said the DM, adding that all students in primary and secondary education should plant one fruit-bearing sapling at their homes.
He instructed that along with community plantation, farmers should be individually given fruit-bearing saplings to encourage personal tree planting to ensure survival of a greater number of trees.
Chief development officer Himanshu Nagpal and other departmental officials were present at the meeting.

Catholics call for environmental action at Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue
Catholics call for environmental action at Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue (Picture credit: AP) RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian Catholic worshippers laid down an eco-friendly carpet in front of the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday and called for the protection of the environment ahead of UN climate talks in the Amazon. Tapestries are a fixture of the Corpus Christi religious feast when Catholics celebrate what they believe is the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This year, the colourful carpet was made from approximately 460 kilos (1,014 pounds) of recycled plastic caps . Over the past few years the Christ the Redeemer sanctuary has increasingly used the attention the iconic statue generates to spotlight environmental concerns. "These caps could be polluting the environment. Today they're here as a carpet," said Marcos Martins, environmental manager and educator at the sanctuary. "It's the circular economy: we take the material, we're reusing it here and then we're going to reuse it again with an exhibition." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Just after daybreak and before the first flock of tourists arrived on Thursday, Cardinal Orani Joao Tempesta led celebrations at the site overlooking Guanabara Bay and Rio's famed Sugarloaf mountain. The caps are "a good reminder of our co-responsibility with ecology, of our concern for the environment, which are very characteristic of Christ the Redeemer," Rio's archbishop told journalists. Thursday's celebration also paid homage to the late Pope Francis and his Laudato Si', a landmark environmental encyclical in which he cast care for the environment in stark moral terms. In the papal letter, Francis called for a bold cultural revolution to correct what he said was a "structurally perverse" economic system in which the rich exploited the poor, turning Earth into a pile of "filth" in the process. "The COP30 is coming up and we've just had the U.N. Ocean Conference. Nothing makes more sense than Christ being a great spokesperson for this issue," said Carlos Lins, the sanctuary's marketing director. Earlier this month, the sanctuary held workshops, discussion groups and actions focusing on environmental preservation. The statue, perched on the Corcovado mountain, is itself located in the Tijuca National Park . Brazil has been hit by a series of environmental disasters in recent years, including severe droughts in the Amazon, wildfires in the Pantanal and flooding in the south. This week, heavy rains killed at least two people in the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul, just over a year after it was hit by the worst flooding on record. Scientists say extreme weather is happening more frequently due to human-caused climate change.

Chad hopes 'green charcoal' can save vanishing forests
This is an AI-generated image, used for representational purposes only. N'DJAMENA: As they zigzagged from one machine to another in the searing African sun, the workers were covered in black soot. But the charcoal they were making is known as "green", and backers hope it can save impoverished Chad from rampant deforestation. Chad, a vast, landlocked country of 19 million people perched at the crossroads of north and central Africa, is steadily turning to desert. It has lost more than 90 per cent of its forest cover since the 1970s, hit by climate change and overexploitation of trees for household uses such as cooking, officials say. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! Expertinspector Click Here Undo " Green charcoal " aims to protect what forest is left. Made from discarded plant waste such as millet and sesame stalks or palm fronds, it is meant to save trees from being chopped down for cooking. The product "releases less emissions than traditional charcoal, it doesn't blacken your pots, it has high energy content and lasts up to three times longer than ordinary charcoal," said Ousmane Alhadj Oumarou, technical director of the Raikina Association for Socioeconomic Development (Adser). "Using one kilogramme of green charcoal saves six kilogrammes of wood." The group has installed a production facility in Pont Belile, just north of the capital, N'Djamena. There, workers grind up burnt plant waste, then mix it with gum arabic, which helps it ignite, and clay, which makes it burn more slowly. The resulting black nuggets look like ordinary charcoal. Like the traditional kind, it emits CO2 when it burns, but less, said Souleymane Adam Adey, an ecologist at the University of N'Djamena. And "it contributes to fighting deforestation, by ensuring the trees that aren't cut down continue to capture and store carbon," he said. Refugee pressure The conflict in neighbouring Sudan, which is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, is adding to pressure on Chad, which has become home to more than 800,000 Sudanese refugees since 2023 -- double the 400,000 it already hosted. "Desertification has progressed in the regions that have been hosting Sudanese refugees for the past two years," said Adser's director, 45-year-old businessman Ismael Hamid. Adser invested 200 million CFA francs (about $350,000) to launch the project, then won backing from the World Bank, which buys the charcoal for 750 CFA francs per kilogramme. The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, distributes the charcoal in refugee camps in eastern Chad. But Hamid said he hoped to expand production and slash prices to 350 to 500 CFA francs per kilo to make "green charcoal" available and affordable nationwide. The plant currently produces seven to nine tonnes per day. "If we want to meet the country's needs, we have to increase our output by at least a factor of 10," said Hamid, calling for subsidies to support the budding sector. Environment Minister Hassan Bakhit Djamous told AFP the government was working on a policy to promote such projects. "We need to bet on green charcoal as an energy source for the future of our country," he said.
