Eritrea: Workshop on Reducing Environmental Pollution
A workshop aimed at addressing health problems affecting humans and livestock, as well as environmental pollution caused by unsafe waste management and plastic use, was conducted on 13 June in Barentu, Gash Barka Region.
Mr. Abubeker Osman, Director General of Agriculture and Land in the region, stated that although directives have been issued at the national level to mitigate the impact of plastic use on the environment, plastic products are still widely used by the public. He noted that the workshop aimed to review the measures taken so far and to discuss further actions needed to ensure environmental safety.
Mr. Abraha Gebreamlak, head of the Agriculture branch, provided an extensive briefing on environmental resources, their benefits, and the challenges related to solid and liquid waste management. He highlighted the coordinated efforts in areas such as Teseney and Akordet, where administrations and communities are working together to eliminate hazardous wastes, including plastic. He stressed the need to implement the existing national guidelines.
Ambassador Mahmud Ali Hirui, Governor of the region, emphasized that environmental pollution caused by plastic is becoming increasingly alarming. He called for the establishment of a committee involving all administrations and relevant institutions to assess current waste management practices and plastic use, and to propose concrete measures for improvement.
Participants conducted extensive discussions on the issues raised during the workshop and adopted various recommendations.

Eritrea: Commemoration of World Drought and Desertification Day
World Drought and Desertification Day was commemorated at the national level at Embasoira Hotel, Asmara, on 17 June under the theme 'Restore the Land – Unlock the Opportunity.' The event, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, was attended by experts from the Ministries of Agriculture and Land, Water and Environment, the Forestry and Wildlife Authority, Higher Education Institutions, stakeholders, national associations, and farmers. The event featured presentations on various topics, including Eritrea's commitment and experience in combating drought, land degradation, and desertification; land use change and its impact on poverty and livelihoods; conservation and sustainable land-use management practices; agroforestry systems for restoring land; environmental impact assessments of agricultural farms; and the role of date palms in restoring degraded land, among other relevant subjects. The participants, emphasizing the importance of continued efforts to address drought and desertification, called on stakeholders to work in partnership to achieve the intended goals. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of climate change, it is essential to accelerate the implementation of sustainable land-use practices and conservation measures. Eritrea: Vocational Training for Students of Hamelmalo College of Agriculture
A three-month vocational training program has been provided to 315 students, including 174 female students, of the Hamelmalo College of Agriculture. The training aimed to enhance the students' vocational skills alongside their regular academic education. The theoretical and practical training covered sign language, Arabic language, video camera operation and editing, electrical maintenance, graphic design, computer technology, and satellite dish installation. Mr. Abel Yohannes, head of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students branch at the college, stated that enhancing the vocational capacity of students alongside their academic education is one of the Union's significant objectives. He called on the trainees to apply the training they received in practical settings. Prof. Woldeamlak Araya, Dean of the College, said that providing vocational training to the youth alongside academic activities will make a significant contribution in identifying and developing their talents. The trainees, for their part, expressed readiness to apply the training they received in the development of their communities and called for the continuation of the program.
