Seven years after kate spade's suicide, best friend elyce arons shares their story

Express Tribune04-06-2025

Spade, known to close friends as 'Katy,' died by suicide on June 5, 2018. Arons met Spade when they were freshmen in college, and their friendship blossomed into a business partnership that helped build the iconic Kate Spade brand. The memoir offers a rare glimpse into their personal connection and Spade's private struggles, which Arons describes as 'a permanent ache.'
In an excerpt published by PEOPLE, Arons recalls visiting Spade's Park Avenue apartment days after her death. The once bright and meticulously kept home was dark and chaotic. As Arons opened the closet door to retrieve clothes, a swarm of moths flew out. She instinctively yelled, thinking Spade might be playing one of their old pranks. The moment underscored the painful reality that her friend was truly gone.
Their story began in 1981 at the University of Kansas and continued through the rise of their handbag business in the '90s, alongside Spade's husband, Andy, and partner Pamela Bell. The brand's success grew quickly, leading to CFDA honors and global expansion. Despite professional triumphs, Spade's private life became more complex. After launching a new brand, Frances Valentine, in 2016, she died two years later.
Arons admits she's still processing the loss. 'Those who loved her continue to grapple with her loss, seeking peace with a decision that left lasting heartbreak,' she writes. Her message now is simple: cherish the people you love and never take their presence for granted.
We Just Might Make It After All will be released June 17 and is available for preorder.

F1 director explains why Simone Ashley's role was cut from final version of Brad Pitt film

Simone Ashley's role in the upcoming racing drama F1 has been largely removed from the final version of the film, which premieres in theaters on June 27. Although her casting alongside Brad Pitt and Damson Idris was announced in July 2024 and she was photographed filming, the Bridgerton star's appearance in the movie is minimal—with no dialogue. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE, director Joseph Kosinski explained the decision, noting that 'two or three storylines' didn't make it into the final cut. 'It happens on every film, where you have to shoot more than you can use,' Kosinski said. Still, he praised Ashley as 'an incredible talent' and expressed interest in working with her again. Ashley has not publicly commented on the edit, but in a recent interview with ELLE, she called the filming experience 'crazy' and said, 'I have a very small part, but I'm grateful to be in that movie.' She also recalled attending multiple Grands Prix and described the adrenaline-filled set: 'Sometimes we literally had one take for certain shots… It was kind of like theater. It felt so live.' In an earlier interview with Who What Wear, Ashley shared that she had met for the film before Bridgerton even aired. 'It's Damson and Brad's movie,' she said. 'I'm just so grateful that I can be part of it.' F1—also starring Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, and Javier Bardem—is scheduled for theatrical release and IMAX on June 27, 2025.

Demi Lovato recreates Kim Kardashian lost earring scene during honeymoon with husband Jutes

Demi Lovato paid tribute to one of reality TV's most memorable moments while honeymooning with her new husband, Jordan 'Jutes' Lutes. The singer posted an Instagram reel on June 16, 2025, in which the couple reenacted the viral 2011 Keeping Up with the Kardashians scene where Kim Kardashian loses a diamond earring in the ocean. Using original audio from the iconic episode, Lovato, 32, lip-synced Kardashian's panicked lines while standing in the ocean in a cut-out swimsuit: 'My earring's gone! Oh my God, I'm gonna cry.' Jutes, 34, played the part of Kourtney Kardashian, calmly replying with the now-famous line, 'Kim, there's people that are dying.' The reel ends with Lovato walking out of the water as Jutes delivers the closing remark, perfectly mimicking the tone of the original scene. Lovato captioned the reel with a playful, 'We had to.' The clip quickly drew laughs and praise from fans in the comment section for its spot-on impersonations. The newlyweds filmed the lighthearted moment during their honeymoon following their May 25 wedding in Santa Barbara, California. She also posted a 'Honeymoon dump' on Instagram, filled with snapshots of jet-ski rides, romantic dinners, and sun-soaked beach moments. Lovato and Jutes first met in 2022 while working on her album Holy Fvck. A source told PEOPLE that Lovato is now 'very healthy both physically and mentally' after years of personal challenges, adding, 'It's wonderful that it's all behind her.' The recreated scene references the KUWTK episode 'Getting to Know You,' where Kardashian lost her earring in Bora Bora—a moment that has since become a lasting meme
