MALBATT 850-12 hosts Gawai, Kaamatan fest in Lebanon
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) 850-12 held a Gawai and Kaamatan celebration at Camp Tibnin, Lebanon, yesterday to mark the major festive occasions observed by communities in Sabah and Sarawak.
In a statement, MALBATT 850-12 said the event, rich in cultural traditions, also offered an avenue for cultural diplomacy, showcasing Malaysia's heritage to the international community under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission.
'Various traditional performances were featured, including the Ngajat and Alu-Alu dances from Sarawak and the Sumazau dance from Sabah.
'Guests were also treated to traditional Dayak and Kadazandusun cuisine while witnessing the Potong Ranyai ceremony, a symbolic expression of gratitude and prosperity during the harvest season,' the statement added.
The celebration was attended by UNIFIL Western Sector Commander Brig Gen Nicola Mandolesi, battalion commanders, contingent members under the Western Sector, as well as UNIFIL headquarters staff.
MALBATT 850-12 Commander Colonel Johan Effendi Mohd Shalleh also presented the Parang Ilang sword and Terabai shield to honoured guests as symbolic gifts, representing the Dayak people's rich heritage, bravery and honour.
'This celebration reflects the spirit of Malaysia and the unity that forms the core of our national identity. It demonstrates how Malaysians remain united in diversity, embracing harmony and mutual respect across ethnic and cultural lines.
'It also helped strengthen ties among the various contingents under the Western Sector and reinforced camaraderie and understanding among peacekeepers serving together in Lebanon,' the statement added.

155 Malbatt 850-12 personnel honoured with UN medals in Lebanon
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 155 officers and personnel from the Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) 850-12 were awarded the United Nations (UN) Medal during a ceremonial medal parade held at Camp Marakah, Lebanon, yesterday. In a statement today, Malbatt 850-12 confirmed that the recipients included 20 officers, 134 rank-and-file personnel, and one administrative and diplomatic officer. "Leading the list of honourees was Malbatt 850-12 commander Colonel Johan Effendi Mohd Shalleh, receiving the medal as a symbolic recognition of his leadership and key role in the successful execution of the mission. "The medals were then presented to senior officers and all other personnel by UNIFIL Western Sector commander, Brig Gen Nicola Mandolesi," the statement said. The medal parade was led by Malbatt 850-12 deputy commander Lt Col Firdaus Shah Budin and accompanied by a military band from the Ghanaian Battalion (Ghanbatt). Also in attendance was Malaysian Ambassador to Lebanon Azri Mat Yacob who took part in the medal presentation as a gesture of the Malaysian government's support and appreciation for the battalion's contributions to international peacekeeping. "The awarding of the UN Medal is formal recognition of Malbatt 850-12's contributions to regional peace and their professional and dedicated execution of international duties," the statement said. Malbatt 850-12 began its deployment under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in November 2024, during a particularly volatile period marked by conflict in southern Lebanon and heightened regional tensions involving Israel and Iran - factors that have severely strained local political stability and security. "In this context, the presence of Malbatt 850-12 plays a vital role in supporting UNIFIL's mandate to assist the Lebanese Government in strengthening security control and monitoring within their area of operations. "Malbatt has also successfully built strong cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and carried out their responsibilities," the statement said. In addition to their peacekeeping duties, Malbatt 850-12 had actively engaged in humanitarian initiatives throughout their mission, including providing medical services, distributing food aid, and organising outreach programs for orphans, it added. – Bernama

Malaysian peacekeepers in Lebanon help contain bushfire
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) helped contain a forest fire near the Tibnine Country Club in the south of the country yesterday. Malbatt 850-12 personnel stationed at Camp Tibnine, spotted thick smoke rising from the nearby forest at 2.08pm local time. "The soldier immediately alerted the operations centre, prompting the rapid deployment of a team to the scene with approval from the commander. "Upon arrival, the peacekeepers sprang into action, carrying out initial firefighting efforts while coordinating with Lebanese civil firefighters who were also at the location," the armed forces Joint Force Headquarters said in a social media post. It added that a UN water bowser was also deployed to support the local fire brigade. "Their swift intervention, along with the effective cooperation between Malbatt and the local authorities, ensured the fire was fully brought under control. No injuries or damage to property were reported," it said. "Their quick and efficient actions have helped reinforce trust and confidence among the local community," the armed force added. Malbatt 850-12, lead by Colonel Johan Effendi Mohd Shalleh, comprises 854 personnel: 82 officers and 772 other ranks from Malaysia and three officers and 27 personnel from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.

Upgrades for Nangka longhouses

The ruai and tanju (communal areas) of all 34 longhouses within the Nangka state constituency will be upgraded, says Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. The Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister said works would be carried out in stages in line with available funding. 'We will proceed gradually,' said Dr Annuar, who is also Nangka assemblyman. 'There are 34 longhouses in Nangka, and I will endeavour to upgrade the ruai and tanju bit by bit. 'This is because my yearly allocation is only about RM5mil, which must be distributed according to needs across the entire constituency,' he said during the 2025 Gawai Ngabang Programme at Rumah Maxwell in Oya Road, Sibu. Dr Annuar noted that three longhouses in the area still lacked access to clean water due to their remote location, and said this issue would be addressed in stages. Commenting on the Gawai Dayak celebration, Dr Annuar said the festival was a testament to Sarawak's harmonious multi-ethnic society. 'Gawai Dayak is not only celebrated by the Dayak community but also embraced by all ethnic groups in Sarawak. 'This is what makes Sarawak special. We must safeguard this spirit,' he said.
